Even if you're in Texas and the phone is shipped via FedEx Overnight, the package will still have to be routed through Memphis (the location of FedEx's "Super Hub"). However, I recall seeing reports in previous years of AT&T shipping iPhones via USPS, so that's also a possibility.
Once your order enters "Preparing to ship" status, it cannot be cancelled. If your device doesn't ship today and you want a new phone tomorrow, you will have to go to AT&T or Apple, pay full price, and then return your pre-ordered phone when it finally arrives.

I seriously doubt that any order that is, "preparing for shipment" will not get delivered tomorrow if it still shows a delivery date of 9/20. All the statuses seem to be updating at different times even when someone has ordered 2 phones at the same time. Or so I hope this is the case.
Exact same situation and got the 2lbs as well on the one that has shipped.
I'm in one of Nashville's many suburbs. Interesting how they determine where they are coming from even though the destination is the same. I ordered via At&t website and both of my phones are shipped FedEx but are currently in Indianapolis with a delivery date of tomorrow. 🤔
Do you have just one or two phones coming? I see it’s 2 lbs- same as mine. But I ordered 2 phones but one still says preparing for shipping....Current status...
I live in Ft. Worth and have preordered for the last 5 years on launch day. I never receive any shipping confirmation or tracking until the box is scanned into the FedEx hub that services my house. Then BAM, I get the At&t Shipped email, Fedex Tracking email, and FedEx app notification all within seconds. Usually happens Thursday afternoon-evening.
