This is an Apple issue. Probably a server issue maybe a software issue.

Only way this gets fixed is if Apple fixes it. #Idiots

I wanna say this is an iOS 14 issue. I started experiencing this after upgrading to 14 on my iPhone X a few weeks before getting the 12 Pro.

Having this issue ever since I got iPhone 12 pro on Verizon running 14.2. Didn’t have an issue with iPhone 11 Pro Max though.

My girlfriend and I recently both purchased iPhone 12s. She ordered hers when preorders opened and received it the following Friday. I waited until around early November and just ordered it on Apple’s website and picked up at the Apple store in my area. Both of us had ATT but switched to Verizon. She wanted a new number so she didn’t have to deal with porting her number over but I’ve had my number for years and decided to port it. Since shes had her iPhone 12 she has not been receiving short code messages or messages from android phones. We didn’t realize the android phone issue until yesterday since 95% of her contacts are girls with iPhones. The day I set my phone up and ported number over I also had the same issue but I just restarted my phone and the messages started flowing through. That didn’t work on her phone. With a little more troubleshooting we came to the conclusion it is NOT the phone itself. When I put my SIM card in her phone I can receive messages from android/short codes. But when she puts her sim in my phone still no dice. Not saying this issues applies to everybody but it seems like a lot of people having this same issue are Verizon customers. Bet there is something wrong with the way her 5G sim was set up. We went to different Verizon stores and the one she went to didn’t seem like they knew what they were doing...

Since the release of the new iPhone 12 models, many new iPhone owners have been running into problems with the Messages app. There are complaints from users who aren't seeing SMS messages from friends, are missing text messages in group chats, and who aren't getting notifications when text messages are incoming.

It's not clear if this is a problem that's related specifically to the iPhone 12 models or if it's a wider issue with iOS 14.1 and iOS 14.2, but the majority of complaints appear to be from iPhone 12 owners.

Those who are experiencing missed SMS messages are simply not seeing some text messages that are sent from Android devices, as MacRumors reader FraXis describes:Most of the people who are missing SMS messages are not seeing them in group chats, but there are reports of some standalone messages not getting delivered. From MacRumors reader TheElmnt:There are also separate complaints of Messages being received, but no notification showing up. This is a problem that even pre-dates the iPhone 12 and iOS 14, as we've had earlier issues with it too. From MacRumors reader bmac4:
Some Verizon users have been able to solve their SMS messages by downloading the Verizon Message+ app, but it's not a complete fix for everyone and it doesn't work for all non-Verizon users. One reader also had success resetting network settings (Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings), but that has not worked for others. Toggling off 5G also does not seem to be a solution.

This is likely a problem that carriers need to address with updated firmware or that Apple needs to fix in an upcoming software update. It appears to be a problem in both iOS 14.1 and iOS 14.2, and it's too soon yet to tell if iOS 14.3 is affected.

When I finished my upgrade from an 11 to the new 12 last night, I discovered that my phone # for my Apple ID under "Reachable at" had disappeared! My text messages sent to my phone # were no longer coming thorough, and when I texted, it was being sent from my registered iCloud email address. Crazy. That's never happened in any previous upgrade. I had to add my phone number manually and then verify it.

I'm having an issue with part of my group text disappearing and I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max. I noticed last weekend when I couldn't locate some pics my sister had sent. My other sister & I compared the same text and clearly part of mine was missing.

I have iPhone 8. Ever since I installed iOS 14.xx the message notifications have been unreliable. Often they show up right when I log into the phone, which could be quite some time after the message was sent.

Update: I contacted T mobile and explained my main issue that I wasn’t receiving verification texts. The csr stted she enabled the “shortcodes” not sure what that is. Any ways soon after she did something on her end, I received a slew of texts includ all the verifications messages I was missing.

hopping this fixes the issue

My issue was slightly different and was on the phone with Apple today. iPhone 12 Pro seem to be receiving texts fine, but is not syncing messages with my Apple Watch Series 4. Ex. When reading texts or deleting on my phone they still show up on watch. Called Apple yesterday their suggestion was to erase watch and set up as new, which I don’t want to do as I will lose four years of Fitness history.

11 Pro, on Verizon, with 14.2 installed. I’ve been having this issue, since 14.1 AFAIK. It’s weridly sporadic. Sometimes all my message notifications pop up like normal, and sometimes I miss all my iMessage notifications. Weirdly, SMS messages seemingly notify me correctly right now.

It's probably related to all the threads on losing cell service...that you guys haven't covered on the front page.

I have the 12 Pro Max since yesterday and had no problems with SMS so far. But I don't get any message notifications in Instagram (first it worked for my main account but not for the second, now I don't get any notifications from Instagram).
And in Gmail sometimes it works as it should, sometimes I don't get notifications and the E-Mails only are visible when I open Gmail

My mom was also not getting text verification codes with T-Mobile. She called and they did something similar, and now she receives them.

A similar thing happened to me. Upgraded to 12 pro max and saw that under Messages > reachable was under my cloud instead of #. I changed it to my # (as it should've been by default) then hit reset network settings now everything comes through normal.

update: sh*t. I see the threads coming in on my mac but iPhone is being delayed. Either iOS/Apple Servers

This was a problem on my 11 Pro with iOS 14. I wouldn't get a notification and then would notice the badge on the messages icon like an hour later.

My issue is my 12 Pro Max keeps saying I don’t have an open line, and I can’t make a call sometimes.
Also, SMS to Apple users send and receive as green, don’t know why

Wouldn’t have happened if jobs was here.

Additionally, I wish I could customize the 5 bars at the bottom when using safari. My thumb can’t reach across and hardly use the dumb middle one. I guess it’s thd mini for me until they...

Count me in with group chats . Missing message from iPhone users too not just android.

Hard to notice issues like this when my phone is on DND mode 100% of the time lol I wish they would add an option to allow text notifications from your favorites like you can do with phone calls.

I've also experienced this on my iPhone 12. But it's not just SMS messages, it has been happening to iMessage notifications as well.

I wonder if it's related to the signal drops everyone is experiencing in this thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/iphone-12-pro-connectivity-issues.2263167/
Weird. I’ve had nothing but great connection experiences on my iPhone 12 Pro. In fact, I don’t think I’ve had a single dropped connection. Neither has my wife on the same phone. We both are missing off texts all from people on Android.

Summary of Missing SMS texts on iPhone group chats:

Doesn’t matter if the non-iPhone user has an older phone or newest, Android, Pixel
Problem is with all carriers
Predominantly iPhone 12, but happening on other iPhones

“Fixes” that do not work:

Reset All Settings (after backup and then restore)
Reset Network
Erase All Settings
Toggle off/on all Message’s settings
Carrier reset local cell towers
Doesn’t matter whether you are on wifi or not
Resetting/ turning on “Integrated Messages” (Verizon only)
Turning on iCloud Messages
Upgrading to iOS 14.2
Swapping out SIM card
Turning off 5G

Some data points to add:

There was a “Preferred Line” option on several contacts during edit. This is a function of having two lines, available via eSIM. I fixed that, chose my cell, thought it fixed… but did not.

I pinned the group chat in question, moved it up to the top of my message stack… and it disappeared from the “pinned” position.

I have text forwarding to my MacBook and here’s the group text, all addresses in red, not recognized (only two of these are non-iPhones). View attachment 1666063
Here's what happens when I click on the red-highlighted address (iPhone):

Before iOS 14 was released, I was having a Messages issue on iPad where a Pinned Group I’d pin on my iPhone would then become unpinned on my iPad. If I pinned it back on my iPad, it’d become unpinned. If I’d pin it back on my iPhone, though, it’d stay until I opened Messages on my iPad and then it’d unpin itself.

excellent breakdown of my experience, too. I continued to have the missing messages issue after setting up as new. Then realized my wife was missing texts.. so far from our end they’re all from people on a Pixel 3 or 4
