When I finished my upgrade from an 11 to the new 12 last night, I discovered that my phone # for my Apple ID under "Reachable at" had disappeared! My text messages sent to my phone # were no longer coming thorough, and when I texted, it was being sent from my registered iCloud email address. Crazy. That's never happened in any previous upgrade. I had to add my phone number manually and then verify it.
Since the release of the new iPhone 12 models, many new iPhone owners have been running into problems with the Messages app. There are complaints from users who aren't seeing SMS messages from friends, are missing text messages in group chats, and who aren't getting notifications when text messages are incoming.

It's not clear if this is a problem that's related specifically to the iPhone 12 models or if it's a wider issue with iOS 14.1 and iOS 14.2, but the majority of complaints appear to be from iPhone 12 owners.
Those who are experiencing missed SMS messages are simply not seeing some text messages that are sent from Android devices, as MacRumors reader FraXis describes:Most of the people who are missing SMS messages are not seeing them in group chats, but there are reports of some standalone messages not getting delivered. From MacRumors reader TheElmnt:There are also separate complaints of Messages being received, but no notification showing up. This is a problem that even pre-dates the iPhone 12 and iOS 14, as we've had earlier issues with it too. From MacRumors reader bmac4:
Some Verizon users have been able to solve their SMS messages by downloading the Verizon Message+ app, but it's not a complete fix for everyone and it doesn't work for all non-Verizon users. One reader also had success resetting network settings (Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings), but that has not worked for others. Toggling off 5G also does not seem to be a solution.
This is likely a problem that carriers need to address with updated firmware or that Apple needs to fix in an upcoming software update. It appears to be a problem in both iOS 14.1 and iOS 14.2, and it's too soon yet to tell if iOS 14.3 is affected.

My mom was also not getting text verification codes with T-Mobile. She called and they did something similar, and now she receives them.Update: I contacted T mobile and explained my main issue that I wasn’t receiving verification texts. The csr stted she enabled the “shortcodes” not sure what that is. Any ways soon after she did something on her end, I received a slew of texts includ all the verifications messages I was missing.
hopping this fixes the issue

This was a problem on my 11 Pro with iOS 14. I wouldn't get a notification and then would notice the badge on the messages icon like an hour later.

Weird. I’ve had nothing but great connection experiences on my iPhone 12 Pro. In fact, I don’t think I’ve had a single dropped connection. Neither has my wife on the same phone. We both are missing off texts all from people on Android.I've also experienced this on my iPhone 12. But it's not just SMS messages, it has been happening to iMessage notifications as well.
I wonder if it's related to the signal drops everyone is experiencing in this thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/iphone-12-pro-connectivity-issues.2263167/
Before iOS 14 was released, I was having a Messages issue on iPad where a Pinned Group I’d pin on my iPhone would then become unpinned on my iPad. If I pinned it back on my iPad, it’d become unpinned. If I’d pin it back on my iPhone, though, it’d stay until I opened Messages on my iPad and then it’d unpin itself.Summary of Missing SMS texts on iPhone group chats:
Doesn’t matter if the non-iPhone user has an older phone or newest, Android, Pixel
Problem is with all carriers
Predominantly iPhone 12, but happening on other iPhones
“Fixes” that do not work:
Reset All Settings (after backup and then restore)
Reset Network
Erase All Settings
Toggle off/on all Message’s settings
Carrier reset local cell towers
Doesn’t matter whether you are on wifi or not
Resetting/ turning on “Integrated Messages” (Verizon only)
Turning on iCloud Messages
Upgrading to iOS 14.2
Swapping out SIM card
Turning off 5G
Some data points to add:
There was a “Preferred Line” option on several contacts during edit. This is a function of having two lines, available via eSIM. I fixed that, chose my cell, thought it fixed… but did not.
I pinned the group chat in question, moved it up to the top of my message stack… and it disappeared from the “pinned” position.
I have text forwarding to my MacBook and here’s the group text, all addresses in red, not recognized (only two of these are non-iPhones). View attachment 1666063
Here's what happens when I click on the red-highlighted address (iPhone):
