Hello,

I have a 12 mini and the display really looks dim even in an interior environment. Compared to an 11 it's way dimmer. Is anyone experiencing this ?

This is a defect.

I am 100% sure disabling your autobrightness (assuming brightness level is kept below 100% manually) will increase your brightness. If so, that’s a defect.

Return it. The next one will be fine hopefully.

If you can’t return it, show it to the Genius bar and ask them to do the same test on other OLED iPhones there.

This is most easily visible when dark mode is off. And/or on a white background. Like Safari Google.com.

I was experiencing the issue but I found a way to fix it up. If you go into Accessibility and under display settings turn on reduce white point. Then lower the white point to 25% and turn off reduce white point. It’s weird but I did feel that the display was brighter then.

Turning off auto-brightness doesn't make it brighter.... But the auto-brightness automatic setting is rather low even for interior conditions. Also, putting brightness to max and doing the same on an 11, the 11 shows way more brightness when on the specs have the sam 625 nits....

There's something going on with the mini that is starting to make me concerned... I hope that it's just a matter of a software update

I've just done that and it seems slightly brighter but I don't know if that's placebo...

This isn’t a software update issue. You’ll need to return it and get a replacement.

This isn’t needed and something is wrong with your phone if you need to do this.

I’m experiencing the same with my mini. If I turn off auto-brightness then the screen can max out super bright though. This must be due to software limiting auto-brightness. I bet it could be tweaked in an update.

I am noticing same issue. My x was brighter in sunlight for me and wondering if pro models are better in this regard.

It won’t. I guarantee that to you. Return it while you still have the time.

This might be on purpose to save battery life. Which would be dumb, but means that they won’t change it.

Your phone is defective. That’s the issue. There is nothing wrong with the Mini. But there is something wrong with your Mini. Why not visit the store and check that on other phones in the store?

It is not. Why can’t people just visit an Apple store instead of assuming? Just check out 5+ iPhones at your nearest Apple store. That’s enough sample size.

Personally, because the next Apple store is a couple 100 kilometers away. Do you have a mini that doesn’t exhibit that issue? Just curious.

I have owned and tried as well as experimented on plenty of Apple OLEDs and LCDs. All OLEDs exhibit the exact same behaviour if they’re not defective. I have owned/experimented on both defective/non defective Apple OLEDs. And I’ve even got Apple to replace my screen due to this exact same defect, after I proved to them the exact same thing I’m asking to prove to them.

The team had no clue whatsoever. But the genius was cooperative. You may not be so lucky. So best to return it.

Just PM a few dozen people who don’t have this issue. That will be like a survey. I’m betting the majority won’t have this issue. But some would. Because it’s a common issue. You’ll need to ask them to do the test I asked of you.

I already have two new minis on order for next week, we’ll see.

Hopefully those will be fine. But do note the issue is super common. It won’t surprise me if 10-20%+ OLED iPhones exhibit this. But it’s still a big issue. And the vast majority of OLED iPhones don’t have this issue at all.

I have a Mini, and I do not at all have this issue FWIW. It’s not quite as bright as the 11 Pro my wife has in sunlight, but that’s to be expected. I use auto brightness as well.

I’d seriously think about having Apple take a look.

The brightness level is set to what appears to be 25% or so by default. And that can and is dim at night. I increased mine just a little and it is much better. And if you can increase the brightness level all the way and the screen responds in kind, that is a good sign all is fine.

That is normal. 11 Pro is indeed brighter than Mini as per specs.

12 should be way brighter than 11 despite both being the same spec. X/XS were 600 nits too. Both are way brighter than 600 nit iPads or iPhone 11/XR. Apple OLEDs appear brighter than Apple LCDs if the measured brightness is the same.

If turning off auto brightness doesn’t increase brightness, your phone is either normal or your issue is something else. Something which I have no experience with.

There is no way an 11 can be anywhere near as bright as any OLED iPhone unless something is wrong with your OLED display.

Same here. All day I felt like it was too dim inside. I thought maybe I had accidentally turned down brightness, but no, I had auto brightness set. Turning off auto brightness does not change anything. But I just compared my mini to my wife's 12P with all the same settings and hers is brighter. Her's is the brightness I would expect.
