Turning off auto-brightness doesn't make it brighter.... But the auto-brightness automatic setting is rather low even for interior conditions. Also, putting brightness to max and doing the same on an 11, the 11 shows way more brightness when on the specs have the sam 625 nits....This is a defect.
I am 100% sure disabling your autobrightness (assuming brightness level is kept below 100% manually) will increase your brightness. If so, that’s a defect.
Return it. The next one will be fine hopefully.
If you can’t return it, show it to the Genius bar and ask them to do the same test on other OLED iPhones there.
This is most easily visible when dark mode is off. And/or on a white background. Like Safari Google.com.
I've just done that and it seems slightly brighter but I don't know if that's placebo...I was experiencing the issue but I found a way to fix it up. If you go into Accessibility and under display settings turn on reduce white point. Then lower the white point to 25% and turn off reduce white point. It’s weird but I did feel that the display was brighter then.

I’m experiencing the same with my mini. If I turn off auto-brightness then the screen can max out super bright though. This must be due to software limiting auto-brightness. I bet it could be tweaked in an update.
This might be on purpose to save battery life. Which would be dumb, but means that they won’t change it.I’m experiencing the same with my mini. I am noticing same issue. My x was brighter in sunlight for me and wondering if pro models are better in this regard.

Personally, because the next Apple store is a couple 100 kilometers away. Do you have a mini that doesn’t exhibit that issue? Just curious. It is not. Why can’t people just visit an Apple store instead of assuming? Just check out 5+ iPhones at your nearest Apple store. That’s enough sample size.

I already have two new minis on order for next week, we’ll see.So best to return it.

The brightness level is set to what appears to be 25% or so by default. And that can and is dim at night. I increased mine just a little and it is much better. And if you can increase the brightness level all the way and the screen responds in kind, that is a good sign all is fine.Turning off auto-brightness doesn't make it brighter.... There's something going on with the mini that is starting to make me concerned... I hope that it's just a matter of a software update
I have a Mini, and I do not at all have this issue FWIW. It’s not quite as bright as the 11 Pro my wife has in sunlight, but that’s to be expected. I use auto brightness as well.
I’d seriously think about having Apple take a look.
Yes. I said it was to be expected. That is normal. 11 Pro is indeed brighter than Mini as per specs.
