Just confirmed with my X. Same exact settings, auto brightness on both, my mini is WAY dimmer. When I move the slider to full brightness (auto-brightness still on) then they look about the same. How unfortunate. I don't really want to go into a store.

How does that matter to you? Just use a higher level on the slider on the Mini?

If not, do my test and report.

Is this issue mostly being seen with auto-brightness on? If so, that could easily be patched via a software update. When the first retina MacBook Air was released a few years ago, Apple had to push a software update almost immediately because the Air was not reaching its 400 nit rating. They pushed the update, and the screens became brighter.

Here the only possible theory is that they are using a more agressive autobrightness setting to improve battery life

It won’t. Because most people don’t have this issue. It’s a small number. Has been each year since the X.

a) i want to use auto brightness
b) this means that my mini at 100% brightness is the same brightness as my X at about 35% brightness. That doesn't seem right to me.

Unrelated to battery. He can always increase the brightness level on the slider. He will need to do my test for us to know whether that’s a design change or defect.

In your post, you said even with AB on brightness is the same. Read what you wrote. I think you mistyped.

Here I will parse this out for you:

"Same exact settings, auto brightness on both, my mini is WAY dimmer" - this is what I tried first.
"When I move the slider to full brightness (auto-brightness still on) then they look about the same" - then, on the mini, I moved the slider all the way up but I did not turn off auto-brightness. At this point the brightness levels looked about the same between the two phones.

50% brightness on both. Test AB on and off for both.

if brightness increases on your MinI but not on X, your Mini is defective.

A question for those coming from the SE1: If you turn off Auto-Brightness on both the SE1 and the mini (and also turn off True Tone on the mini), and set brightness to maximum on both, and then view this forum in Dark Mode on both devices, how does the brightness of the text compare between the two devices for you?

Apologies in advance for asking this question in multiple threads.
Both of them in Light mode. SE1 is brighter.
With True Tone on which was factory default and looks horrible.
Dark mode with settings you requested. SE1 is brighter.
Not sure if mine is technically defective in anyway, but it is warmer and dimmer than my SE1. I’ll try it for another few days and decide whether to return it and keep using the SE.

Is auto brightness turned off? I noticed on all my phones if i disable auto brightness and swipe down and hold the brightness to open it full screen and exit, all my phones get a lot brighter.

Thanks a lot! Your last photo with the forum looks similar to my situation. For me I would have said that the brightness of the text is roughly equal, but it's difficult to judge due to the yellow tint. It certainly appears less contrast-y.

I have replacements scheduled for Tuesday, we'll see how that goes.

The auto brightness was turned off in the pictures. I generally don’t like using it. Thanks for the tip I’ll definitely try that.

In Dark Mode with text they are much much closer. Was hard to get a photo showing it. I could live with the subtle difference in Dark Mode text, but I use Light Mode and so far not a big fan of the yellow..oops ‘warmer’ tone.

Just curious, have you tried to reset the auto brightness setting (toggle it off then on again) on the SE to see if its brightness level changes? I only ask that because maybe it’s possible at some point you adjusted the brightness slider up while auto brightness was toggled on, thus changing its default AB setting.

Here is a side by side with both on auto brightness and True Tone. There is a very noticeable difference, although strangely it's not that apparent in the pic. I have to crank it up to 80-100% just to get it to where my X was normally on auto brightness. I'm going to exchange it just as soon as I figure out how. You can't enter a store without an appointment and you can't book an appointment to the genius bar or to buy the phone at my closest store. And the Sales chat isn't working.

UPDATE: I figured out my issue. I had Zoom turned on in Accessibility, even though it wasn't activated. For whatever reason, it significantly dimmed the screen all the time even when it wasn't in use. I figured this out on accident because I went into Accessibility > Zoom and changed the Zoom Region to Window Zoom and it immediately brightened the screen considerably. I turned it all off now.

My mini no longer has any issues with a dim screen and I am happy now.

Hey man. I just picked up the new iPhone 12 Pro Max and have been noticing a few issues right out of the box. You seem pretty knowledgeable on this and Apple is not really easy to access right now especially setting up a Genius Bar appointment. the 3 issues I have are as follows:

1) The screen seems a little bit more yellow than my XS Max, I have tried this with true tone on/off, auto brightness on/off too. Seems yellower on all settings.

2) The screen dimming to prevent overheating seems to be way to premature, the screen dims even if the iPhone is running cold. This was noticed first when setting up and I have since tested it with a few games, it seems to dim to about 50% and moving up the slider doesn’t change it beyond that.

3) The issue you have been describing. My screen at 50% is dimmer with auto brightness on and gradually increases 3-5 seconds after I turn it off. However I tested 3 different phones and that seems to be happening for all. This one bothers me least because I always have auto brightness off and the brightness seems to be ok. But overall want a flawless phone and would like to know if there’s any point in returning while it’s still within the return period.

Thank you!

I will message you soon.

He will just tell you to swap it.

1. Newer Gen phones are more yellow compared to previous Gen.

Within a few weeks it will become whiter. But may never become as white as your previous Gen.

2. No experience with this. But dimming while overheating can happen I think.

3. This is a common defect. And it affects a greater percentage of ohones each Gen. This Gen is the worst affected so far.

The severity varies from phone to phone. Some are badly affected. Some lightly. You need to decide if you can live with the severity of your defected phone.

It is common to find this defect in multiple phones, but try a big enough sample size and most/majority won’t change in their level of brightness.

Ideally I recommend you return and buy new.

Note - If your brightness level is 100%, then disabling auto brightness will indeed increase the level of brightness. That’s not a defect. That’s normal. But is your brightness level is around 50% (or say between 20-80%, basically anything but 100%), then the level of brightness shouldn’t change.

And this is why @aakshey should refrain from giving his half-assed diagnosis over the internet. Without hands-on and knowing all th variables, an instant "take it back" is not the solution.

People, such as the new member a few posts up, see him posting a lot and speaking very authoritatively and matter-of-factly and they think he has all the answers. He doesn't.

It is pretty obvious I’m talking of something that will be unaffected regardless of whether zoom is enabled or disabled. The two things are unrelated.
