I looked at the Minis in store today. The first one I held was surprisingly dim. Even next to the regular 12, which should be rated the same.

Went to the next store and it was way, way better. Maybe it was the settings (both were set to 100 % brightness though) or there are some QC issues.

No settings. Just QC issue. Is common with Apple OLEDs. And perhaps is an even bigger issue with the Mini’s this time since the owners of other models aren’t complaining yet.

A question for those coming from the SE1: If you turn off Auto-Brightness on both the SE1 and the mini (and also turn off True Tone on the mini), and set brightness to maximum on both, and then view this forum in Dark Mode on both devices, how does the brightness of the text compare between the two devices for you?

Apologies in advance for asking this question in multiple threads.

So I did some more comparisons against the 2020 SE. it seems the mini can get just as bright when in strong light. I can max out the brightness and still watch the screen get even brighter by moving into a brighter room.

I imagine Apple is limiting the auto-brightness until it’s actually needed in order to improve battery life. It’s definitely not a technical limitation of the display.. at least on my unit.

Yours is 100% defective. If you need sunlight for it to get bright, something is wrong.

A healthy display will be much brighter than an SE 2020 with or without sunlight.

If you are happy with your phone, great. Let others replace theirs and get perfect replacements that don’t exhibit this issue.

Your ALS is out of whack. That’s the issue. I’m not sure you understand the cause or what that is.

Mine was dim at first when it was syncing all my data and charging, I believe it has to do with it overheating so it dims the display until that is complete. Seems nice and bright to me now.

That is different and unrelated. It isn’t a defect, that’s normal. Might happen every time you restore.

You shouldn’t expect that on your Mini. Her Pro is rated 800 nits, your Mini is rated 625 nits.
Okay, that makes sense; however, it still just seems so dim. When I turn off auto brightness and turn brightness all the way up, this is about what I was used to on a normal basis with my X (with auto brightness on).

Maybe I just need to get used to it but I don't know if I can live with it on auto brightness. On my X at night when the brightness is turned all the way down, sometimes it felt almost too bright. On the mini with the brightness turned almost all the way down, I can't really read the screen.

With AB on/off Mini should be similar to X. If it is much dimmer, ask for a replacement.

What does this even mean?

Exactly. Do me a favour. Please visit an Apple Store and check out out 5-10 OLED iPhones.

Replacement isn’t the ideal option because sometimes people can get unlucky twice. In an Apple store you’ll have 5++ iPhones. You’ll 100% get what I’m saying once you do this test in the store.

My friends iPhone mini flickers below 40% brightness. I think there are some issues going on with this panel.

I really doubt this is widespread. It might affect 5-10% unlucky customers if I were to be very pessimistic.

Just ask for a replacement if it is flickering and you feel that’s not normal. It’s very unlikely to be a widespread issue.

It doesn’t matter what it means. Yes, I used the acronym to make it sound even more complicated. :)

But I also offered a simple solution, go to an Apple store. There are so many iPhones there. Just compare.

Do ensure all iPhones are sub 60-70% brightness when you do the test. If you do it at 100% you might get misleading results because there will be too much sunlight there. HaS to be a place with limited sunlight ideally. But limiting to well under 100% brightness level on slider is a good enough alternative as of now.

I don’t know if you have heard about this pandemic going on, but your constant suggestion of this tells me you have no clue about the current state of Apple Store service.

Thank you kindly.

Anyway, as I was trying to explain. I believe my mini is working just as designed and I’m glad it can reach the same ~ 600 nits my SE2 can in bright light 😁

Great. Enjoy it.

Well in India Apple stores are indeed open.

Just confirmed with my X. Same exact settings, auto brightness on both, my mini is WAY dimmer. When I move the slider to full brightness (auto-brightness still on) then they look about the same. How unfortunate. I don't really want to go into a store.
