Really excited by this -- I've been holding onto my original iPhone SE since early 2016, and I had a 5S before that, so I have been on the same design for 7 years. So glad Apple is finally seeing value in a smaller but premium device with the (in my opinion) much more attractive flat-sided design.

In the 2000s, smaller was cooler and often emphasized in Apple product releases (think G4 Cube, iPod Nano, etc). Really great to see this release. Only bummer is having to wait a month!

  • not so MINI after all (the great device 😀) however neither unfortunately is the price 😢 (specially with taxes and everything over here, it's 750$ or more).

it's 779 over here. Ouch!

Also strangely if I don't want to charge wirelessly, does it have a lighting port or not?
Apple's website says it hasn't and neither has the 11 Pro Max!

Well I thought I was going for a 12 Pro, but this mini is just too good I think. Smaller is so much better... shame about the missing telephoto but really can't justify such a big leap in price and size for that alone.

I suspect pretty much no one is trying to decide between the mini and the pro max.
You may be right, but if I did have to pick between my two favorites in this line up they would be the mini and the pro max. That's because the camera is the most important feature to me and the size/weight is even more important than any phone features and trumps everything else.

Of 2 minds here.
1. Would like to support a phone that isn't a massive phablet.
2. This phone isn't compelling enough to buy (poor battery life, no touch ID, and no ProMotion).

OG SE will probably get a battery replacement and hold till iPhone 13...

This Mini looks absolutely fantastic!

I considered picking up an iPhone 11 Pro on the cheap before, but suddenly all prior generations feel old. With the new design, 5G, MagSafe, this feels like a big leap forward.

Can't wait to hold it in my hands! :D

I'm running an (original) SE... ...not in the market now. But it's good to know that when the time comes to finally move off the SE, there'll be something worth buying with a similar form factor.

Luckily iOS 14 supports the original SE, so there is still some time. I'm hoping the 12 Mini sells well, so that Apple continues the line with a 13 Mini and so on.

Screen size comparison between SE1, SE2 and 12 mini:
untitled.png

So the 12 mini display is a tiny bit narrower (about 0.8 mm) than the SE2, and dramatically taller (1.43 inches or 36.4 mm) than the SE1.

This is based on the pixel dimensions and PPI specs, which should be slightly more accurate than calculations based on the nominal diagonals. The black borders are outside of the actual display area.

I’m so thankful for Touch ID in my SE, can’t imagine having to look at, then swipe the screen every single time I take it out of my pocket. I don’t want to look at it until it’s unlocked.

Bought the 11 and returned it after 2 weeks. Gave it a good chance. Face ID is a waste of everyone’s energy and time.

(Not to mention all the ppl in public taking off their mask to unlock instead of waiting for the passcode and being forced to type their passcode in public)

Touch ID in the “side” button, like the current iPad Air, is likely for the future.

Am downsizing my 11 Pro for one of these as I’ve been wanting a smaller phone for some time but there’s been too many compromises previously. Will look at secondhand values, but with Apple they’re offering £550 for my 11 so it might be a hassle free option.

Seems odd to me to introduce new iPhones without TouchID during a pandemic when we all should wear masks in public.

So mini is about $730 before taxes, which could add another $30 or so. That’s the price of an iPad Pro 11. And for game-level processing which probably won’t be done on such a small, battery challenged device. Is the form factor such an expensive draw that the 2020 SE won’t suffice?

I do not have an Apple USB C charger which was added to last year's iPhones.
Apple use USB-PD for their fast charging (source: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208137), so any PD-compatible charger will allow you to fast charge it. For me that means my Macbook Pro's charger, my Pixel 2's charger and a dual-port Anker I use as my travel charger. Shame it's still Lightning (USB-C would suit me better as I'm trying to phase out other cables) but I never expected them to do otherwise.

Or use a USB-A charger with a Lightning cable. Won't fast charge, but if you mostly charge overnight that may not matter much.

Unlike the more achievable smaller volumes with the competitors, 50 million Touch ID modules couldn't be made in time for such large sellers as the iPhones, but it seems likely for next year when you look at the new iPad Air, an unremarkable device to pin the power button Touch ID on. It's coming to other devices.

A14 Bionic chip powered small form phone from Apple, the iPhone 12 mini should be super useful. Price is decent.
Not that I disagree with the sentiment, but it's funny that the 12 mini is now a "small form phone." It's all relative to expectations, of course, but to me the 5 form factor is "small."

It's funny that normally I would be thinking about getting this as this size is ultimate for travel but covid lockdowns for me has me not using my current iPhone that much to begin with. I'm on my desktop way more than before and my current iPhone 8 is still quick.

I’m nervous about this battery not being that much better than my iPhone X. My iPhone X battery is currently at 89% health & I got it replaced just over a year ago. Not having 512gb is disappointing too. Now I can’t choose which phone to buy. I don’t care for the cameras on the pro models & the screen sizes are stupid.

On top of having to pay Verizon an extra $120/year to even use 5G.

I didn't notice that Verizon charges more for 5G. I'm on AT&T and moving from my previous unlimited duo-device plan to the new one that supports 5G I'm actually saving money with higher data limit and tethering specs.

It'll be a Mini for me as well, finally replacing my totally clapped out iPhone 6. As always, the journey across the Atlantic adds 25% to the price but that's nothing new. Us Brits are used to being ripped off!
