It would be great if everybody that updates would report back here. So far it seems to be fine for the few that have chimed in. Hopefully that's the majority.

The problem is only partially resolved. The screen still has poor sensitivity when we dont hold it in our hand and touch only the screen with our thumb.
If I lay my phone on a flat surface (don't touch it) and scroll with my thumb, all scrolling is fine for me. This is after 14.2.1 and both a screen protector and case on, so I think maybe you have something else going on.

In addition everything else works fine (torch, camera, passcode) if I'm not touching the phone and just using my thumb.

Look, everything works fine When i hold the phone in my hand, but if i put it on the table and try to touch with flat part od my thumb, it still doesnt work well
Right, that was the problem from the start. I'm sorry the update didn't work for you. I'd definitely be return/exchanging it if that's the case.

for most people, when they held their phone it worked fine pre update. Maybe ur update got corrupted or something?

I can replicate what @adamfrompoland is saying if I use the large surface area of my thumb not the tip. This is with the new update. Elsewhere, Lock Screen etc is improved. I’m kinda viewing it as related to to the smaller screen size. (The same test works on a 11 pro max )

Well. Shoot. lol

It's hard to tell in those videos, but how realistic is the angle you're using with your thumb? Would it actually happen?

Just updated to 14.2.1 and the issue appears to have resolved! Touch sensitivity with my thumb is fine when holding the phone as well as lying flat on the table. Haven't tried with a call yet, but swipe up, camera and flashlight buttons all function as they should now.

I can't replicate this. I'm using the largest area of my thumb (I'm a male) and it still works fine.

Yasss thanks for showing this
My phone works exactly as yours in your video, Lock Screen works perfectly fine, only thing I’ve noticed is if the phone is laying on something and I use a huge touch with my thumb it doesn’t scroll. This isn’t a big deal for me because if I’m using the phone while it’s not in my hand I’m pretty much always using a fingertip. I think most people won’t notice it for this reason.

(Also this means Apple will probably issue an update to fix things tonight or tomorrow.) ;)

So far, I like the ***** screen protector and it seemed to have taken care of things anyway. I got it installed with no dust (unlike the ESR one), but I saw the 14.2.1 news pop up in my RSS reader and thought "of course!" and just installed it. Nonetheless, for my friend who was going to tough it out with the ESR screen protector (liked the whole notch being covered) and anyone else who had a favorite screen protector already on, it's nice to see it was addressed in less than a week.

Also, thanks to everyone around here who did contact Apple, shared updates, and provided information about what worked and what didn't. I think it made a slightly annoying/frustration situation feel a bit better.

After further testing, I can also replicate @adamfrompoland's issue. But only if the phone is laying flat and using the widest part of my thumb flat against the screen. TBH, I never use that much surface area to touch my phone. The issue isn't prevalent if I use my "normal" amount of touch on the screen, but I could see this being annoying in certain situations.

This issue happens pre update as I’m still waiting for my phone to download the update. Who the hell uses the phone like that anyways lmao

Yes, if I make an effort to use my entire thumb then scrolling doesn't work, but this is not a scenario I would call a big issue compared to the previous one. Maybe they need to further calibrate it. Don't know how many will be affected by this?

@scotsmandc I am post-update now. All my issues with the lock screen were resolved for regular usage. Slide to unlock, camera and flashlight buttons all good. And agreed, I'd never use that much touch surface with normal usage.

@MacBainNO Agreed. It's a non-issue for me, but interesting how the sensitivities are calibrated differently between models. Maybe something to do with the available screen space.

The update works for me also. If I lay the phone flat without touching it and go into ogre mode with my thumb, scrolling does not work but in the hand and thumb at a normal angle, things work as expected.
