In a height obsessed society, I can see problems with this in the future. As was already mentioned, Tinder and also celebrities try to "pad" or lie about their heights because being short is so "bad". Pretty soon, you will have a right to your own height much like your health or weight.

Hmm well apparently I’m only 171cm! (Actually 183). Maybe standing the phone up and walking away to record your own height isn’t the best way? Will have to get someone else to try it!
Just what I needed.
Likely the inaccuracy is +- 1 inch at best. I've never read anywhere that the measure app is accurate. But maybe the LIDAR scanner has improved on that.
My wife said at +/- an inch, size DOES matter! 🤣

It took me a while to realise that it does not work trying to measure your own height in a mirror as the LIDAR just "sees" a flat surface.

Lying about your height is such a weird thing to do. It’s pointless and yet also so easy to be caught out, why even do it?

Anyone know if this could be used to capture speed? Obviously Lidar has been used by traffic control, but I’m in the world of fitness and this could be so useful to calculate a clients speed in say a 40 yard dash...

I’ve tried several times and cannot get this to work. How would I even know if the LiDAR was working?

Lidar at that distance is usually off by a couple of inches. It will also include the height of a person’s hair. Example is clear in the first photo of this article. It added three inches to the subject’s result because it included her hair and her hat.

Try to measure a 30cm ruler with Lidar and the Measure app. I consistently get 31 cm in the app.

So it will take a few revisions and coding smarts to improve Lidar accuracy to the macro level.

Latest Apple news on mactechweb.com:

”October 26, 2020. Cupertino. Apple today announced a brand new product—the Apple Ruler. Made of a recyclable product, wood, and without any harmful minerals. It's 12” long and can be used to measure all sorts of things. It lasts for several years and requires no recharging.

Apple also announced the Apple Ruler Pro, a full yard long, made of similar material and easily stored inside a closet with a simple propping action.

Finally, Apple introduced the Apple Tape Measure, with an automatic recoil system, permitting the user to measure dimensions up to 6 feet, including family pets.

All three products can be used with the recently produced New Apple Pencil and, in a flash, measure growing kids' heights, family member heights, and adults' heights. All it takes is a wall or door frame and a single mark.

Expected longevity is 20 to 50 years. “We're committed to a green ecology,” CEO Tim Cook announced. In talking about Apple's new products at the launch, Phil Schiller told Mach Tech Web, “Can't innovate, my @#$!””

Amazing! Can't wait to buy them!

And 2… what is this Tinder obsession with people’s height? 🤨

Because sadly some women need to show off their man as a kind of status accessory, which is also what some men do to women. But smart people worth being with don’t care how tall a man is or how big boobs a woman has.

This doesn’t seem to work at all on my friends new iPhone 12 pro. Does wearing a mask make it not recognize a person? Is it disabled by country? (we are in Japan.)

Hope someone measures Trumps weight! His doctor said he only weighs 230 pounds.
We can then hear about how Tim Apple conspired against him and his supporters by inserting fake LiDARs on the new iPhones.

As person working on 3D CAD, I hope some engineers developing kind of LIDAR based 3D scanner to measure dimension. I often converting object manually to 3D measuring manually either with digital caliper or my trusty ruler. It would very convenient way just shooting by camera.

My Xperia phone can scanned small object directly to 3D but quality of file is leave a lot to be desired.
I have been experimenting with the lidar and looking at videos online about it. The resolution is extremely low and it has almost no use outside of what they are doing for photos and some AR uses. It’s much lower resolution that the facetime sensors.

Nah, it's not "it is what it is." It's BS that's gotta be dismantled.

It is what it is was short for: It’s the result of millions of years of evolutionary neuropsychology and behavior written down to the genetic level in our brains with hard wiring so deep that it is unalterable and pre-cognitive.

But go ahead - get on with the hilarious attempts to dismantle it.

Now, can somebody please use this on Trump when he's not wearing his 3"+ heels & shoe lifts?! Many images show him barely 6' when standing next to people of verifiable height.

Why? Do you think that’ll be the ultimate gotcha moment that ends his presidency?
