iPhone 12 Pro models feature a new LiDAR Scanner for enhanced augmented reality experiences, but the sensor also enables another unique feature: the ability to measure a person's height instantly using the Measure app. You can even measure the seated height of a person in a chair, according to Apple.

When the Measure app detects a person in the viewfinder, it automatically measures their height from the ground to the top of their head, hat, or hair.

To measure a person's height, open the Measure app and position the iPhone so that the person you want to measure appears on the screen from head to toe. After a brief moment, a line will appear at the top of the person's head with their height measurement, which appears in either feet and inches or in centimeters depending on whether imperial or metric is selected under Settings > Measure > Measure Units.

The circular shutter button in the bottom-right corner allows you to take a photo of the person with their height measurement and share it with them.

This feature is limited to devices with a LiDAR Scanner, including 2020 iPad Pro models and the upcoming iPhone 12 Pro Max.

I did a quick check with a couple of my coworkers and it appears that it is accurate to -1/+1 inches.

celebrityheights users are going to love this. They’ll argue accuracy about something else.

That said as a 6’4” barefoot guy I can stop being told - no you just be 6’6-7” I’m 6’2”

If it isn’t subtracting shoes from the final measurement, then it’s not really measuring height.
You can glance at shoes and have a pretty solid idea of what to subtract.
The moon pot nikes are the tallest I think at about 1.5 inches. Regular beakers are 1” or so. Converse are like .5.

a lot of people quote their height in shoes because a lot of doctors measure that way.

I had a nurse measure me who couldn’t reach or read the studio meter who knocked off 2.5 cm from my height when I was barefoot. A week later I was measure 4.5 cm higher in shoes. A week or so after that I was measured barefoot and properly in the morning 2.5cm more than the first measurement (also morning) and a couple weeks after barefoot in the afternoon which was .5 cm less

That’s another point, height changes through the day enough that average shoes are negligible if it’s not first thing in the shie height isn’t far off peak day. Anyway.

also - I don’t that it is all intentional lying. I know a guy who was 6’5 who swore I wasn’t 6’4”. He was like .25 away from 6’6” and I’m about .25 over 6’4 average day height. He felt I was a tall 6’3”. Do you realise how insanely close it is to argue about that? Even my 6’10” friend doesn’t dwarf me. Less of a difference than me and an average guy.
I dunno - this has to be for kids. Surely height isn’t THAT big of a deal.

I haven’t met too many men who are 5’8” saying they are six foot though I gather it’s not uncommon. Maybe because I’m in the upper percentile and they just wouldn’t say something like that around me. Is it that much if an issue? My oldest friend is like 5’5”. He doesn’t care.

This is great for work at the hospital when estimating a patient’s height to work out BMI/ideal body weights!
Except BMI charts are an absolute sham with 0 meaning. The rock is obese according to them.they also don’t adjust for people significantly taller / shorter than average

even the guy who made them said they were insignificant.

Is this not working for anyone else? It keeps saying move further and then when you do it says move closer. It never pops up with a height measurement.

Welp, there goes that theory. This is aggravating, I want to try it now that I know it’s supposed to work. This makes me wonder if the LIDAR sensor is working at all.
That is what I was wondering, but idk how to test that? If you look through the tinder jokes there are several others in this thread who are having issues with it working.

There is an app called Roomscan LIDAR that I just tried and it seems to work fine with that. So I guess it’s just the Measure app.

how do I use my iPhone 12 Pro to measure my own height? I assume that it won't work if I stand in front of a mirror... what if I prop the phone up on the table and walk several feet away?

thanks!

Get in view and “hey Siri, take a screenshot”

You take it in context of the patient that is in front of you. It’s an additional piece of information to help build your clinical picture.

Practising doctors are terrible at estimating height, weight, and then use bmi so maybe this will be really helpful for one of them.

I wouldn’t hold validity on a bmi chart because a doctor who was trained on its false merit said so. Sorry.

Source 6’4” 109 kg man who has been estimated at 6’ and 80kg regularly, then had weight discussed.

I’m sure you’re better than that / but it’s the internet. Appeals to authority don’t mean much.

Oh great, is this another bug I’ll be reporting for 7 versions of iOS just like how I report a bug in every beta about how Siri keeps talking in “miles” as if I’m from Rome 300BCE 🤨

EDIT: Nope, checked and it’s actually proper metric in the real world! 😁 Hopefully one day Siri will leave Ancient Rome and talk in a human language when it comes to distances 😂 (Literally reported this for at least 6 years and Apple still haven’t fixed it! 😂😭)
I'm in 🇨🇦 and both Siri on the Mac and iPhone report distances to me in kilometers. Perhaps in the UK/Scotland, Siri plays by different region rules. Perhaps you should speak to the UKMA ;-)

Another one of those gimmicks that you try out a couple of times, then forget about and never use again.

Have you tried going into Settings>Maps>Distances and selecting ‘In kilometres’?
