I’ve installed the 14.2 public beta. And I confirm, the problem that was in the imagination of some of us is fixed!
Thanks for confirming this. With the end of the 14-day return window approaching quickly, I was getting pretty worried. I take a lot of close-up photos and this is definitely not an issue that I want to be stuck with. Hopefully, 14.2 will be released to the general public soon.

Ok Mr.Iknoweverything.
It's funny how people in this forum think that just because we are new, we must be associated with other brands or some other nonsense. I post here because I care about my product, and the more visibility we can get from an issue (software especially), the fastest it will be fixed by Apple. Then, why would I waste my money on an Iphone 7+, a 12, and a 12 pro if I am an Android user, there are so many more interesting things to do in life than buying a competitor's product and trashing it on forums. I stopped answering because there is no point debating with someone like you, we give you the evidence of a "bug" and you still deny it despite it being brought up by multiple people, all owners of a 12 pro.

Then @Macshroomer pointed this out really well, there is an issue probably AF with close distance objects. I have nothing more to add to that.

@qap has also explained this pretty well, so I'll leave it here.

Here is another video I took with an iPhone 12 and 12 pro, illustrating this issue, so stop denying that there is no issue at all. Yes, it may come from the LiDAR, so I hope Apple will fix this in a future patch note.
This is why I stopped debating about this, I have other stuff to do with my time than waste it here, trying to feed a troll who clearly denies that there may be a bug here.

I'm having the same issue but it's even more infuriating when filming, because it ruins the video not being able to focus as you do close-ups.

Why isn't Macrumors reporting this?

I updated to 14.2 and I’m still having horrible focus issues in low light. It’s not just focusing up close, it seems stuck and won’t focus either way (near or far). I wonder if it’s the lidar stuff being buggy?

This is happening once in a while, it’s not always reproducible.

This is poor. My X does a better job than that focus wise.

This was actually an issue with 11 Pro as well. When I switched from iPhone 8 Plus to 11 Pro last year I realized that my camera cannot focus as reliably as my 8 Plus in low light, either in stills or video mode. It kept focusing on the wrong places all the time. So apparently it's still not fixed with 12.

Same issue for me. I have updated to 14.2 and my iPhone 12 Pro Max still can’t focus to short distance. Did anyone try 14.3 beta?

This thread is still going on? Unbelievable. Learn what minimum focusing distance is people! Here is my 12 Pro Max. Won’t focus inside of 3 inches, because minimum focusing distance. Focuses instantly as soon as I move it back outside of 3 inches. There is nothing wrong with your Pro/Pro Max.

So my old iphone 7 and iphone X both have better focus that 12 Pro Max?? Because both focus instantly in 2 inches.

Got the same issue on both phones, my personal and work 12 Pro. Definitely hasn't been fixed with 14.2 release. To the person saying 'minimum focus distance' I immediately noticed something was wrong compared to my iPhone 11, even jumping on a facetime call with my brother I wanted to show him my new apple watch and it's not focusing even from a fairly normal distance, it's actually better trying to show it via the front facing camera!
