Since this issue seems to be impacting almost everyone, I have to wonder what the hell the reviewers were doing. How is it that nobody caught this
Exactly my thoughts. Perfect display etc.is what they say about it. Yes it is good but has flaws. Even people more into tech like Marques or Erica not mentioning one thing. I think it is hard to see, only in the dark. Maybe this is why.

I think they will bring an iPhone 12 only update again sometime with this being fixed or try of this being fixed. Maybe 14.2.2.?! They did a fix for the lock screen problem quite fast. But this was maybe just some bug in Mini firmware. This issue is affecting all iPhone 12 models.

Does nay one have an example of an actually non all black movie or youtube video that shows this? I only see it using the main black video test. So far I haven't seen it in normal use. Not a deal breaker for me but it should be fixed.

People who use true dark mode all the time in their app's interface, will be highly affected by this...

I don't, but I still want it fixed, because my XS Max was never having this problem, nor is my 11 Pro Max now. It's a great pleasure watching videos in the dark on those 2 screens, but on this problematic screen, it's a downgraded experience, for sure.

Oh, they know it alright! Just don’t wanna get ‘barred’ from receiving future ‘ review units ‘, hence it’s mostly all ‘ praises ‘

But then they could have limited it to dark mode. But it’s present whether you are in dark mode or not. But it makes no difference at all. Tested and replicated the issue in both modes.
Might be software that’s confused about motion by the user and motion in dark scenes?

I saw someone on Reddit mention this, so I had to test it:
In Safari, the video will give this effect at the very top of the screen, from the speaker and about 1/3 of the screen down. This lasts for about one second, before going back to full black.

In the YouTube app it doesn't go away at all, and at around 50-75% brightness it will pulsate, switching between black and green/grey every second or so.

Has anyone experienced similar results, where the video has different results in Safari and the YouTube app?

Yup I don't use my phone in a way that would effect me but I Paid 1500 for it and others do use it this way so it needs to be fixed.

I even get it when using the photos app doing night shots the black bars in landscape mode are lit and raised. Pretty annoying

Hello. I am following this thread for 3 days now. Because I am also affected (no real black). Have my 2nd iPhone 12 64gb Black now - both with OLED issue.

The latest iOS 14.2.1 did not fix it in my case.

But the „Touchgate“ seems to be fixed.
My brother in law was affected with his 12 Mini - now everything‘s fine.

I think there will be good chances that Apple will address this issue very soon

I can only see a slight flicker on the black video in complete darkness. In complete darkness I can also see on a black image that it takes a few seconds to switch completely off. That's it. In normal light everything looks good. It should be fixed though. It does not happen on my girlfriends 11 pro max.

Are you saying that your brother in law‘s 12 mini no longer has the OLED issue?

Can‘t say. Didn‘t check it on my own with his OLED. But did check his touch screen and that is ok now.

Edit: His OLED issue still persists...

My replacement 12 Pro Max didn’t initially exhibit the problem, but over time seems to have developed it. Albeit a much more subtle version. Really hoping for a software fix at this point.

For those looking to perfectly replicate the issue, in a pitch–black room set your phone brightness to 25% and open Clock.app, then watch the screen go from almost black to completely black.

I have this issue too. I didn’t notice it at first, shouldn’t have read the article. I have two slightly bright pixels too that are oddly enough green.

ignorance is bliss.

Nope. Whats interesting is during the first part of the update that lasts 3-4 mins with the apple logo and the white bar not once did I see the raised blacks. It then went to the second logo with white bar and it was raised the entire time. The brightness of the logo seemed the same. Im pretty sure this is some sort of driver issue that got over looked and will take apple some time since it effects various panels. I can't imagine so many panels form LG and Samsung being defective esp since there seems to be pattern and its not always raised even at 50%. Maybe 14.3 final will give them time to fix it.
It was the same with me. The first screen with the Apple logo and the loading bar was perfectly black. The second screen (Apple logo seemed to have the same brightness) had the illuminated black.

Anyone else noticed improper pure black levels similar to LCD screen?
You can check videos like this, better in a pitch black room:
If this video is truly black, then I do have the same problem. It’s hard to notice at a lower brightness and is not an issue when at maximum brightness. It is the most notable at a medium brightness when it flickers green then pitch black. I am really hoping Apple fixes this with a software patch because I love this phone and their company and if people have to replace their phones that will be both annoying for us customers and hurt Apple as a company. I have an iPhone 12 Pro.

My 12 pro max exhibits exactly what you just described and it’s very puzzling the difference between the YouTube app and using YouTube through safari or google browser so in my opinion it’s more than likely a software issue keeping my fingers crossed

I have until next weekend before I have to return it. I’m hoping it is a software issue, which it might be, seeing as there are differences between apps. Wouldn’t it be more consistent if it was a hardware problem?

I haven't yet tried the test but it was immediately obvious to me that my Pro looks slightly more washed out compared to my old XS. Slightly less of a punch of contrast. Obviously different screens etc so they won't be the same, but noticeable until I get used to it.
