I just got a call from Apple. The support staff has now received a message from the engineers that they are aware of the problem and are working on it at full speed. Whether software or hardware is still unclear. A software update will either be released or an exchange program will be offered on support.apple.com in the near future.

Seems like they will fix this no matter what the issue is. Good on them.
I can only imagine what kind of issues we would have if they pushed for 120hz this year too..

Do these issues still occur on iOS 14.3 Beta 2?

There is a Reddit thread about this, in which people mention that it's not fixed

I cancelled my order due to still not knowing if this a hardware or a software issue.
I live in a country where I cannot just return a faulty product. Sometimes, they even deny noticing an issue with said device, because they don't won't to bother

I’ve done more testing and see it more on my max. It’s very clear when you shut down the phone in total darkness you see it for a couple of seconds until the phone shuts off. When you start up the phone it’s totally gone while the Apple logo is on for 15 seconds then you see the black go gray for the last 4 seconds and then off for a second then you are at the login screen. I’ve repeated this and it’s been consistent several times. I really feels like a display driver issue since it clearly is fine at times. I also believe that they all do it but some don’t know what to looks for. At first I thought mine was fine. It needs to be really dark in the room. I wonder how much of an issue it will be in real-time world use? If it’s hardware but the time they offer swap outs I may just live with it until I trade in for the 13. I can’t be without my phone and also it’s a pain putting in all my passwords back in etc. even doing a restore it takes a week or more to get everything back the way I had it.

If it’s an official Apple exchange program you can contact Apple directly and get it exchanged, no matter where you bought it. This is not country specific.

It’s been a huge issue for me when watching series/movies at night in my room. The blacks look way off and sometime the screen starts to flicker between grey and black.

So it looks like "most" devices are having this issue. Many have had 3-4 phones all the same. Both my 12 pro and 12 pro max do it although I didn't think my max did at first. These are from batches all over the world. From this its possible to conclude it effects LG and Samsung as supposedly the mini and max use Samsung. Im not denying some don't have the issue. Even with the iPhone 4 antenna gate some claimed they didn't have the issue. The fact that it most likely effects both LG and Samsung it sounds like software as I can't imagine 2 top OLED screen manufactures both having defective screens. Hopefully its just a driver issue.

Here is a 13 page thread I based my above comment on.

I have an update for everyone. In an internal document shared with technicians this week, Apple said it is aware of this issue and investigating:

Wonder if the updated 14.2 release fixes this? I can upgrade via my mac but wonder if I should wait. Strange Apple released this update but people on 14.2 already need to do it via the Mac etc.

Some of us are on 14.3 and it doesn’t fix it

On my 12 Pro Max, i noticed another thing. Only if the brightness is set to 0%, the top portion of the screen has a different tint to it. You can test it in the YouTube app in dark mode, by tapping on the three dots. If I rotate the device, it is still on the top portion (where the notch is).
Anyone having this issue as well?View attachment 1671208

I don't see this on my pro max. I do see a slight flicker when playing the black video in complete darkness.

14.2.1 is out. Doesn't claim to fix this issue as im sure apple needs more time but maybe they snuck it in. Downloading now.

Nope. Whats interesting is during the first part of the update that lasts 3-4 mins with the apple logo and the white bar not once did I see the raised blacks. It then went to the second logo with white bar and it was raised the entire time. The brightness of the logo seemed the same. Im pretty sure this is some sort of driver issue that got over looked and will take apple some time since it effects various panels. I can't imagine so many panels form LG and Samsung being defective esp since there seems to be pattern and its not always raised even at 50%. Maybe 14.3 final will give them time to fix it.

I think it’s a “feature” they placed there themselves. It does help on “smearing”. If you look on an iPhone 11 Pro in dark mode, there’s a purple “trail” behind bars in settings etc. On iPhone 12 Pro there’s not, but if you stop touching screen for a few second on the iPhone 12 Pro, the first swipe will show the purple “trail”.

Does nay one have an example of an actually non all black movie or youtube video that shows this? I only see it using the main black video test. So far I haven't seen it in normal use. Not a deal breaker for me but it should be fixed.

But then they could have limited it to dark mode. But it’s present whether you are in dark mode or not. But it makes no difference at all. Tested and replicated the issue in both modes.

Try find a movie/series on Netflix with dark/black scenes. Stranger Things have some dark scenes.
