Someone else pointed this out to me, if you run an app for a few seconds and then kill it off, the time reported will be 1 minute. If you start 10 apps that same way, it will be reported as 10 minutes. So iOS 15 is definitely over reporting app time used. It is always over reporting app time used to the next minute. I have verified that myself. We already know that iOS 15 is over reporting battery percentage. So I believe what we are seeing in the battery usage charts is over reporting app time used and battery percentage used. Which confirms my suspicion that the battery usage charts are not useful because they are over reported.

My question is, has there been any change in the iOS 15.1 beta that corrects the over reporting of battery usage?

Yes, it's me I think. For the fun, I've just opened 30 different apps in a row (open, close, open, close....) and I have 30 minutes Screen on time !

Imagine that you have just used 30 mins on your app time and used 0% battery. Holy cow, wow you have the best battery life ever. 😂😅🤣

I opened Case #101516762166 with a senior advisor. I also left feedback at Apple Feedback. If enough people report this to Apple, they *might* change it so that it is more accurate.

Perhaps some trolls publish their battery chart screen with this method !
"Wow I can reach 78 hours with screen time and i have 50% left !"

There are people posting their battery usage thinking it is impressive and it turns out to be over reported. They aren’t necessarily trolling though, just reporting what is captured in the battery usage charts.

It’s not just iOS 15. The version before this does overestimate the SoT for an app being “used”. Perhaps this is why the Screen Time values are always lower than the SoT reported on the battery tool under Settings. But I still think we won’t know if the battery percentage being reported is accurate because we simply don’t have a bench mark to compare it to.

We actually do, the Coconut battery app. It will show up the battery percentage to one decimal place.

True. But I doubt Apple would entertain us if we were to compare the discrepancy between the % values between iOS and Coconut.

iPhone 13 Pro Max
iOS 15.0.2
Charged phone to 85%
Overnight standby used 3% battery
Used 4 hrs 38 mins, 37% battery used
Estimate for 100% battery usage, 12 hrs 31 mins

What is interesting about this battery usage chart, it matches my calculations almost exactly. Usually, when I calculate battery usage based on the individual bars, the total I get is not the same as what is shown on the chart for SOT. This is the first time I have seen it match what I expected it to be. I will need to do more testing.

I had already told the advisor that I was seeing this issue when using Coconut Battery. Otherwise, what proof would I be able to give them. If enough people give feedback on this or open a case, Apple *might* change iOS to report battery usage more accurately.

Can I ask, why is there a sharp drop in battery at 6am? Usage for that hour window seems rather little.

I was just watching the battery percentage reported Coconut Battery vs my 13 Pro Max, and I can't see any pattern to when iOS reports a drop in battery percentage.

I have no idea why the battery dropped at that time. It could be that it dropped because from 3am to 6am the actual battery percentage really did drop but iOS did not show the drop in battery percentage until 6am.

Typical workday with iPhone Mini 13; (Low power Mode enabled)
-Charge to 80% in the morning. Taken off at 7 am.
-5G at work. Probably around 3 hours SOT
-45 minutes on/off Wifi throughout the night
- Don't charge overnight
-Rinse/Repeat
= around 60% depletion down from 80% to 20% for a total of around 3 hours 40 minutes SOT
around
Here's a Screenshot. *I forgot to take it before plugging in.

From your battery usage chart that ou posted, it looks like your battery usage was abut 4 hrs 42 mins. This means the estimate for usage of 100% battery, 7 hrs 50 mins. That is really good battery life.

Lots of useful information running Coconut Battery from my Mac. I can wirelessly track info from my iOS and iPad OS devices. You can see the discharge rate and test the rate when you are running different apps. You can also see the charging rate, health of battery, and history. Very useful in determining what's causing the extra battery drain on my device.

Also you can gage your charging rate if you want to test your charger(s).

Overnight standby is really good!

you used safari a lot without any battery drain, on android chrome was very power hungry, here it’s not a problem at all, if anything, is cheaper than many other apps

The Coconut Battery is what we have been using to see the discrepancy between what iOS 15 is reporting for the battery percentage and the actual battery percentage as reported by Coconut Battery. iOS 15 is over reporting the battery percentage as it looks like it is not reading the real battery percentage on any sort of periodic basis that I can see. We can see this after the phone has been charged and the battery percentage does not drop for several hours. I have seen the battery percentage after a charge stay at the charged level for 5 hours.

I think that Safari is not a battery draining vampire because I use a ad blocking extension, AdBlock Pro. Many people have been having overheating and battery drain issues visiting MacRumors. Not one time have I encountered my 13 Pro Max ever getting warm in any situation I have used in. That phone is so damn impressive.

battery on android is a disaster and the main reason I switched to iOS.

it can last 2 days easily now, on android I had to recharge every day and be mindful when going outside and having intensive usage.

I was looking at my battery usage chart on my 13 Pro Max and I noticed something. The app times and the bar graph didn't seem to jive. On the battery usage chart I have attached, when I selected the time interval it shows Screen-On time as 19 mins but if I add up the times of all the listed apps, it adds up to 20 mins. So now we have another data point. This gets cursory and cursory. Apple has closed my battery usage case that I opened this morning. Not to be deterred I sent an e-mail to Craig Federighi. So, I am curious if I will get back any response on my e-mail.
