What’s with mine

Only 4 hours of screen time today and already down to 32%

Should I reset and restore? Can’t seem to find any rogue app.

How about location services? Do you guys have it on or off? How much does significant location impact your battery life?

I also have the phone paired to my apple watch btw

You can try to reset and restore but instead of restoring from iCloud, you could try restoring from backups you’ve created using Finder/iTunes.

I think, location service will only impact battery life significantly when an app is constantly looking for your location, such as map apps. I’ve had location services turned on for Google Maps, weather app. The only one that drains a lot battery is when I set a route direction using Google Maps.

BT connections do take away some battery juice but again, it should be insignificant.

Main common culprits of battery drain, from my experience over years of using iPhone, are restoring from iCloud, backing up photos to iCloud and poor cellular signal.

What I don’t understand is if I charge my phone to 80%, why does the battery percentage be off by 5% after I take it off the charger?

I understand why the battery percentage does not drop after charged to 100% due to the max capacity. It just not not make sense for 80%.

Do you mean the % indicator dropped by 5% on your iPhone display or from the Coconut Battery app?

It’s true that the time taken to drop 1% after 100% charge is longer than subsequent drops. But I realised that this is the case when the phone is charged to any % in fact. I once charged to 92% and it took a long time to drop to
91%.

I guess Apple’s algorithm is written in a way where after charging, the next drop takes longer.

Take a look at thread I linked. In that thread it was found that the Apple Watch was causing excess battery drain.

What I saw was still a 5% over report by iOS vs Coconut Battery. I charged to 80% and stayed at 80% for 5 hours in standby and another hour after being used. That is 6 hours where it stayed at 80%.

I understand why it can take a long time after charging to 100% for the battery percentage to drop below 100%.

One thing I have noticed is the over reporting of the battery percent starts at 5% and then the over reporting gets less as you use the battery more, to <1%. So Apple probably has a table with graduated values. But when you restart iOS reads and displays the actual battery percentage. It just does not seem to be consistent.

Transferred from iPhone to iPhone. Never used iCloud photos. Could be due to poor cellular as my phone is always showing 1 bar for me. Gonna try turning on airplane mode to see if it'll make any difference.

Very interesting. My Apple Watch is always on so that may be the case. Guess I'll turn the watch off and see if there are any noticeable differences.

This is what was draining my new iPhone 13 mini . I unpaired the watch now it seems so much better, also no % drop overnight.

Are you going to leave it unpaired or set it up again as new? Shame, because I do like using my Apple Watch but the drain seems to be pretty hefty this time around, for some reason.

I'm getting awful battery life on my iPhone 13 Pro. What's even more frustrating is I originally got the 13, which had amazing battery life, but really wanted the ProMotion and thought the Pro would have even better battery so I returned it and bought the Pro. Battery at 36% when I took the screenshots:

Screen Shot 2021-10-21 at 8.59.03 PM.pngScreen Shot 2021-10-21 at 8.59.19 PM.png

For reference, my partner's 13 drained by 22 percent since being off the charger since the morning, with similar SOT. This is exactly how my iPhone 13 was as well - screenshots from when I had it at 38%:

I'm struggling with whether to return it and go back to the 13, or try the Max (it's bigger and heavier than the Pro and I'm not sure if I'll like it).

Based on the battery usage chart you posted, it looks like you got about 2 hrs 44 mins, 45% battery used. You would be getting about 6 hrs on 100% battery usage.

I see Find My in your app list. That could be draining your battery.

I was having trouble with my 13 Pro as well. I’ve now initiated a return and got a pro max.

The battery was at 36% when I took the screenshot. So 64% usage for 2 hours and 55 min of SOT.

I calculated it backwards which gives you even worse battery life. Never mind what I said about the Find My app.
Ah I see. Do you think Find My isn't to blame? Is it possible I just got a bad unit and exchanging it for another Pro might resolve it? I'm not sure what to do...

It's perplexing because I always do iPhone to iPhone transfer and I setup both my 13 and 13 Pro the exact same way, and yet the consumption seems to be wildly different. I wonder if my doom scrolling is causing the phone to stay at higher refresh rates on the Pro?

I thought about it more and Find My is not the issue. What is doom scrolling?

Exchange your unit. Or perhaps try restoring again and see how it goes. That drop in battery with really low usage is something you shouldn’t be facing, objectively regardless of what apps you’ve been using at that point of time.

Does anyone on here turn on their significant location? I turned it on a couple of days ago because I want to try the optimised charging function but not sure if having significant location turned on actually contributes to my drain

I’m going to leave it without the watch for a few days so I can get consistent usage and then pair the watch as new and see how it goes from there.

What did you do in that hour? If you used heavy apps (the camera, a game, or browsed a lot of pictures in LTE, say instagram) that rate of discharge can be normal

My battery life has gone downhill since the last update , when I originally had it the battery was amazing, I thought it might be photos doing its infamous background processing but no … very odd

Just on twitter and some light browsing using the google app. All on wifi. I decided to unpair my apple watch and currently doing a bit of battery testing:

Again, just some light browsing and videos on youtube. Currently sitting at 70 percent with 3 hours of screen time. I also have most of the location services turned on.

Much better than this morning, but still not sure if the apple watch was actually culprit.

Will pair the apple watch and re do the test for my next run

However, i did notice that the google app was eating a lot of battery more than usual.

I only had 7 mins of screen time on that app within those 55 minutes.

Does anyone else here use the google app?

It seems normal now. No I don't use anything that Google does. I unpaired and repaired my watch 5 as new but didn't notice any increase or decrease on autonomy compared to before. In my case the Watch don't matter (but of course we watch users have worse battery, also depending on how far you have it, for example I don't have wifi at home and I might leave the phone in a room with the watch 2-3 rooms away, it's all bluetooth connection in that case I guess, or maybe they create their own ad-hoc wifi)

Battery seems to be ok . Mixed wifi / 5G. 2:45 minutes consumed about 50 % of battery. Not bad for the mini I guess. 6 hours would be nice

Ah! That factor had totally crossed my mind. Because I usually leave my watch in the other room when i go to bed.

Right now my phone has 5hrs 10mins of screen time with 40% left.

I think it should be alright now.
