The notch doesn't bother me and I don't see much advantage to making it smaller.

It's less secure and convenient than Face ID. I doubt Apple will make a product with both as one of them would be redundant and tiny devices don't have space for redundancy like that! It's one or the other and it'll be Face ID.
There was a rumor just within the past week or so of Apple bringing under screen Touch ID.

1. No one has ever complained about the security of Touch ID, even after Apple tried a marketing tactic to get people to care about the increased security, which didn't work
2. Face ID is not more convenient than Touch ID. I have never gotten annoyed with Touch ID, because it works when you expect it to work. Face ID is terrible. Different angles, the way you are looking at the camera, facemasks, if you have anything obstructing your head slightly (such as a pillow or blanket), Face ID does not work.

The advantages of this kind of notch reduction are almost null.
Show carrier, battery percentage and not much more. A bit less video invasion also, but tiny improvements after all.
If it were a reduction in height instead.

Still ugly. Only acceptable notch is v-notch or pinhole.
