Well yeah, I did that. Over and over. It gave me no other option. There was no other option. No button to select Apple Pay which I thought was weird. Just enter your card info so I had to copy the number from the wallet app. And even after doing so would immediately delete the security code I just entered and told me I had to enter valid card information. It recognized right away it was an Apple Card, it put the logo next to it once it put in the card info. But would then half the time delete what I just entered telling me to put in something valid.

I've been in the Apple iPhone upgrade program for a few years now and was impressed the last few years how easy the process has been. But obviously something strange happened this year. I hope this can get corrected because I'd be annoyed to lose out on the 3% cash back for an issue on Apple's end with their own cards.
I had problems too. I used my personal card at the advice of an Apple representative who said I could change it later via Citizen One, but now I'm finding I'll only get the 3% cash back after the initial fees or something like that. Spent way too many hours and had a bad experience AND paying more than I thought...

Apple owes us around 7 bucks plain and simple.

I am so confused - why do so may people order the Pro Max? It’s too big for single handed text entry, and it’s as heavy as an iPad mini! (Especially these year’s models which are the heaviest on record?) Aren’t the 13 Pro and Pro Max same in every way except size / weight / bloat?
Nope, already tried the smaller size 11 2 years ago. Max forever for me. Can't stand the smaller screens with my middle aged eyes. And yes I know you can enlarge the font, but on the smaller screens it truncates the web pages.

I talked to Apple Support and they said I should use a different card to order (which I did and it worked) and then to call Citizens One and change it to the Apple Card.

What they did not tell me was that 1) The initial payments go on my personal card and don't quality for that sweet 3% (boo) and 2) Citizens One has a 2 hour wait to talk to anyone.
Ok so if you have an online account access set up with them, the default card should not change. Either way, you log in here https://www.fsdsapps.com/ecs/citizens-one-apple/#!/citizens-one-apple-auth/login sometime before your first payment is due and change it. As for the initial payment, its hard to say what will happen (approx $200) UGH.

The iPhone Upgrade Program with Citizens Bank and Apple Card really stinks, and has since Apple Card was launched (when Citizens claimed the problems were "temporary"). This week's issues:
  1. Pre-approval on Wednesday was pretty smooth, other than I've placed an Extended Fraud Alert on my credit file so they had to call me to confirm as expected. They did this within a few minutes, and all appeared ready, until...
  2. 8am Eastern I bring up my pre-approved upgrade and try to check out. I had to scurry for my Apple Card info (why not pre-populate it from my account since it's my default card, and an Apple Card to boot, and I was ordering from my iPhone? Why no Apple Pay?). Got a "There was a problem with the card details you entered. Please try another card" error, but the card details were correct.
  3. Tried a couple more times, and at one point it *almost* made it, getting past the credit card page to a message from Citizens One: "There's an issue with your application. Unfortunately you weren't approved for this offer. Citizens One will send you an email explaining why your application was unsuccessful...". Hang on - but I was pre-approved by Citizens on Wednesday.
  4. Switched to AmEx and retried. This time the order went through, but was immediately put on hold by Apple. An email quickly followed: "Citizens One has detected the Extended Fraud Alert that you asked be placed on your credit file. Your order is on a temporary hold until the verification department at Citizens One can contact you to verify your identity". Hello, pre-approval???
  5. Got a couple of emails from Citizens saying "Thank you for your recent application(s) for an iPhone loan with Citizens. After careful consideration, we’re unable to approve your request for the following reason(s): CREDIT CARD DECLINED". I guessed this was from my failed attempt to order via Apple Card, but it gave me a phone number to call at Citizens.
  6. After about 30 minutes on hold with Citizens, I got through to an iPhone Upgrade Program person. Explaining everything, they confirmed that those emails were from my Apple Card attempts, and that they had an issue they were working on to address that (yeah, sure).
  7. Regarding my successful-but-on-hold AmEx order and the pending call from Citizens to verify my identity, they said that was another temporary glitch and a misleading email, because it didn't take into account my pre-approval. Thing is, Apple just pinged Citizens One when I placed the order, and Citizens were the ones with the pre-approval. It seems their pre-approval isn't worth much in my situation (with the Extended Fraud Alert).
  8. Citizens reassured me that, when their system eventually catches up, that "Apple will push through the order", and that they didn't in fact need to contact me again, due to my pre-approval.
  9. My order is still on hold at Apple. Who knows what will happen with it. In the meantime I bear glad tidings: my iPhone 13 Pro case was delivered today!
It's baffling that this process is such a mess. I'm sure a lot of people either don't use Apple Card, or haven't flagged their credit files with Extended Fraud Alerts, so I'm in the minority here. Still, pre-approvals don't seem very effective, and Citizens' lack of support for Apple Card since it was launched in 2019 when ordering is nuts. There's irony in trying to order a new iPhone from the Apple Store app on my iPhone 12 Pro with Apple Card and the iPhone Upgrade Program with a pre-approval ready to go, which you'd think would be the perfect combo, only to be forced to manually enter a credit card number, have the order declined, and wind up on hold with a delivery date TBD.

Since Tim Cook's bound to be reading all this, when can Citizens One be ditched in favor of an iPhone Upgrade Program that works seamlessly with Apple Card? When monthly installments were added I assumed this switch was imminent, but no. Maybe Apple has a multi-year deal with Citizens One and they have to wait for the clock to run out, but hopefully that's either very soon or Apple just drops them for being so utterly crap and pays any associated penalty for terminating them early.

I tried that and it didn't work. Called CitizenOne and waited an hour only to hear that maybe its not updated yet and I need to try again later. :/

I haven't skipped a yearly iPhone upgrade in a long, long time. Looks like I'll be doing that this year.

T-Mobile wants us to pay tax upfront and I'm not going to pay nearly $200 today (2 phones) for an upgrade from the 12 Pro to the 13 Pro when there isn't much difference between the two phones. Guess we'll wait until the 14 Pro next year.
Verizon has collected tax up front the last couple of times I have upgraded (I am still on an Xs max) so I expected this part.

Apple has entered market segments where it has no or limited experience and has foolishly taken on the wrong partners. Did no other bank want to partner with Apple on the Apple Card or did Tim grab Goldman because the financial terms were so attractive? A very bad decision. And now there are problems with Citizen. I think part of the problem is that the US banking system and processes are so antiquated compared to Europe.

Just contact Apple support chat - couldn't help me cancel one of the pre-orders.
Phoned Apple support - unable to cancel one of my pre-orders.

Apple your ****ing useless glitchy website put through two orders and now your support and online page won't let me cancel one of them. What a **** ordering experience.
The orders have to process, then you’ll be able to cancel
bruhh! $790?! that's basically $800 and I was planning to sell my 128GB for $850/$900. I'm definitely just going to trade in at Apple and then cancel my AppleCare+ and get back the remaining $130.
iPhone 12 Pro Max must be in high demand on the refurbished market. I’ve figured Apple makes zero profit on trade-ins and passes on the highest values possible to incentivize new purchases.

I added my new loan account there and thought about changing the payment method already since at this point the loan is $0 and will probably change when they ship. But chose to wait until it's shipped so I don't screw up the order that wasn't easy to get. I do expect us to miss out on the 3% for the initial charges but I guess my AMEX will give me 1% or 1.5% for it, at least I should get it on Friday. If I waited until they fix this mess I'd be looking at a new phone for Thanksgiving.

This is EXACTLY what happened to me…down to the letter…..every single step. Uncanny…and infuriating! I feel your pain,

Lol so I checked my shopping history and says my pre-order has been cancelled haven't received any mail yet but it doesn't look good...what can I do ?

Pretty much the best pre-order experience I have ever had (and I have done them all). Set it up yesterday in Apple Store app, today when it went live I hit “complete” and done.

13 Pro Max, 512GB, ATT, Blue

9/24 delivery.

Surprisingly easy. Now for a week of 'Jesus, I spent €1240 on a phone' 😬

Due to issues with the store, I purchased as a guest. It tells me I can add it to my Apple ID, but provides no options to actually do this. Is that normal?
I did this with something else a few months ago, and got an email from Apple a couple of days later, guiding me through the process of adding to Apple ID.

Well… I’m that person this year. I have the wrong shipping address. I even went in and changed the shipping address yesterday. Buuut, I paid with Apple Pay and it put in that shipping address. We’re moving next week and needed it shipped to the new house 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ I even hit cancel because I saw the address the last second. Too late 😐
Similar issue here.

Talked to Apple Support on the phone. They say shipping address cannot be updated (even by them) until their system is out of "maintenance mode", probably 24 hours. But it shouldn't ship before I am able to update the address.

Had this issue with Verizon and realized it was because the phone number (my daughter's) wasn't setup as an account manager on our Verizon account. Went into our Verizon account and added her number as an account manager, and it worked just fine.

I checked that when I saw your comment, but mine was ok there. But long story short, five hours later… we found the problem. My acct with t-mobile is a business account (sole prop, under my personal ssn). This has not been an issue the last several years of the IUP, same account type. But someone at Apple changed it to not process the order for business accounts. So t-mobile changed mine to personal, and I retried… and now it worked. Only other issue is that it kept fouling up my Apple Card number. Had to keep fixing it. You would think Apple could keep track of the Apple Card number :-/

That’s good to hear! I just checked my order and the cancel option has been added, but no edit. I’ll check tomorrow:)

Is it just me or is the taller notch worse looking even though it’s less wide??
I agree. They should use the extra horizontal display space for something like battery %. Not utilizing this extra space though, we were better off with a shorter, wider notch.

Order my 13PM through Verizon on the upgrade program. No issues, knock on wood. I’ve had issues in the past pre-ordering through Verizon.
