Its starting to turn into groundhog day here:

Article: "iPhone Whatever might not have some feature you care about but the next one after the Whatever might."

Comments: "...notch...", "...Tim Cook isn't a visionary...", "...Steve Jobs is rolling in his grave...", "...trillion dollars..."

Lather, rinse, repeat tomorrow

That should have happened already, it’s been on the rumor mill for the 12 too! Meanwhile, most other mobile OEMs have minimized or eliminated their notches completely! Chop chop trillion dollar Apple!
No other OEM has a Vcsel laser system, they have a simple camera....

Well, time for me to turn this obnoxious argument on its head: do you think the average user cares about Vcsel when they see their peers have more modern looking, notchless phones that cost half the price of their brand new iPhone?

Personally, I do care that after four years already Apple has done nothing about it, despite having virtually unlimited resources and top notch (pun intended) talent pool. I’d much rather they invested the millions that go into movies and series nobody cares for to revolutionize sub-screen technology than make perfectly safe little iterations YOY. And it does boil down to leadership at the end of the day.

I dont get it. Why is everyone so obsessed with the notch? I couldn't care less if it is cut in half or stay as is.
For me size, screen, speed and above all battery life, are key items I care abut.
People who worry about such things need to get out more.

For some reason I always find rumors of next year’s iPhone really annoying when we are close and waiting for release of this year‘s iPhone.
And the notch doesn’t bother me at all.

I mean, one is a secure method of depth mapping a face, the other camera method still routinely gets tricked by photos...

The notch, which houses the front-facing TrueDepth camera system, on Apple's 2021 "iPhone 13" lineup may be smaller, according to the leaker known as "Ice Universe."

The rumor speculates that the iPhone 13 lineup will apparently retain the notch in 2021, but it may be slightly smaller. The leaker added rough sketches to illustrate the change, which show that rather than being reduced in width, the notch may be reduced in height to make it less noticeable.

Rumors circulated for some time suggesting that the iPhone 12 lineup would see the first reduction of the notch, but it now seems that the design change has been pushed back into 2021. However, some more reliable rumors have said that the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini may be the only model to have a narrower notch due to its smaller screen size.

The notch has been a point of contention for some iPhone users, who have expressed frustration with the design decision. A reduction of the notch in this way on the iPhone 13 may go some way to appeasing critics of the notch. The alteration would also offer another reason to upgrade in 2021, when the iPhone's design is largely not expected to change.

Last week saw the first considerable leak of information about the iPhone 13 lineup from display analyst Ross Young, who said that the devices will come in the same sizes as the iPhone 12 models, sport 120Hz-capable ProMotion displays, improved camera sensors, and sub-6GHz 5G connectivity.

how about we get the 12 out next week and we can start talking about the 14. Who cares!!!

Yea, just like the 120hz displays that were supposed to be on THIS year's models too right? What happened Apple? They are going to put out the most expensive iPhone ever with none of the upgrades we were expecting. Pass. Much better options out there for less money.
The way to teach Apple is to vote with your dollars. Amirite? I don’t know what we were expecting...but if apple doesn’t provide one with the upgrades they want, as noted there are other options.

I just wrote up a long reply to this thread and lost it when my phone locked and when I unlocked it Safari refreshed and my reply was lost. When I have the time I’ll write an even longer one on Apple’s dated ****** overpriced hardware. My grandmas Android phone company is more advanced.

iPhone 13 has a smaller notch, iPhone 14 has a under-display notch, iPhone 15 has a smaller under-display notch..... please wait a minute, let me think about the notch-topic of iPhone 16, 17, 18..........

again: do you think people care? Especially now with Covid.

You can't use those cameras like faceid though, its login only. Try using one for a banking app etc, will ask for fingerprint. So need to ask if users care about seamless biometrics or not for everything. They've had face unlock for a very long time on android, has always been known to be a less secure method of securing your phone and for casual lock.

That's true and fair. But it's time for the next best thing already. FaceID remains totally unchanged since 2017. In the very least, provide both authentication options (FaceID and TouchID on the wake button).

Potentially silly question: will the delay of the 12 delay the 13 as well? I know no one actually knows the answer, but what do you all think?

I only got my 11 pro max in December, which means I wouldn't upgrade until my Christmas day birthday anyway, but I wonder, given what we know about the 12 if it's worth just waiting for the 13?

Notice I didn't mention the notch because....it doesn't bother me. Never has. I never got the hate around the notch, just like I never got the hate about bezels. Neither bother me, neither is anything I notice.

Exactly, I forgot about the existence of the notch five minutes after buying a notched phone... that is until this rumor, seeing it again until it fades off. Also have semantic satiation from saying and reading the “notch” word so many times... became hard to pronounce.

OK, I'm convinced, that's worth waiting for ! ... skipping the iPhone 12 models !
I don’t know man, you might be left hanging for it, didn’t say that this rumor is coming from Mr Honorable Awesome Prosser so it might be inaccurate.

People do need to get over the notch and realise until under display camera tech is ready which is another 1-2 years i imagine..

only thing apple have really dropped the ball with this year is no 120hz....but i guess with LTPO this will arrive next year.

Reducing height doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense, since you can’t use those corners, then, for indicators (time, battery, etc) and still be legible. Unless they shift upward, which means that, because of the rounded corners, there will be less horizontal space (which may be how they go).
Fair point.
On an iPhone X (in case it’s different per device) on the left I got the time in {h:mm} format and on the right signal strength, WiFi/network type and battery level.
Indeed to be able to move it up a bit so that the base of each icon matches the base of the notch they would definitely need to be shortened to avoid the rounded corner edges... maybe the icons will change in width, maybe some would disappear or modified (like signal strength could have less markers) or if the notch is both shorter and narrower they could be moved to the inside more to avoid the corner... or, maybe it will have square corners?! *gasp

I can't believe there are people out there that rather have a chipped screen over a small bezel strip on top.

So this year is essentially an 11S, which is no shock. Slightly different design with 5G (about time), less battery than the 11, and wait for it..... a LIDAR CAMERA!!! (Everyone act like the LIDAR camera is a huge deal even though you'll never use it).

Because what, the under display camera tech grows on a tree and we have to wait for it to ripen? Someone has to MAKE that thing, and that someone could/ should be Apple.

What's funny about LTPO is that Apple owns the patent but would rather sit on it instead of doing something about it.

How did you know that they aren't doing prototypes and R&D? Did you expect the tech to mature instantly ready for mass market?
