iPhone 13 Models Will Be Slightly Thicker and Will Have Larger Camera Bumps

Meanwhile, I keep using my iPhone SE 2016 or iPhone 4S — and contemplate eventually “upgrading” to an iPod Touch — to have something that I can fully and comfortably use with one hand and that fits neatly in my pocket. My iPhone X sits in the closet, only taken out when I want to take a special photo, and will be replaced once I buy a proper digital camera.
Have you tried the 12 mini? It is thinner than the SE 2016 and very fractionally larger height and width. The flat edges make it feel very familiar compared to the rounded edge phones.

I'm reading all this stuff about the bump. I have always hated the bump / camera protrusion. I realize after some thinking that what I really hate about it is the lack of symmetry - not from a looks perspective, but from a function perspective.

  1. The bump prevents the phone from being effectively used while laying flat because of the rocking that the bump causes. This could be solved by having a bump all the way across the top of the device, rather than in just a corner of the device. It could also be solved with a sufficiently sized bump (the current one is probably big enough) but just having it centered (on the top edge).
  2. Perspective taking photos / finding the camera / covering the camera with fingers. The camera(s) positioned where they are is not an ideal location for actual picture taking. It'd difficult to take photos one-handed and not cover the lens. It's sometimes difficult to determine "where the camera is" for perspective finding.

The phone should be a wedge shape. Thick at the top so that it can be flush with whatever ridiculous camera that all you ‘pro photographers’ need, and then it should taper down as you get to the bottom.

The perfect shape for sliding into the tight pocket of your skinny jeans.

Will there be doorstop jokes, of course. But what’s the alternative? Increasingly and uniformly thicker phones to accommodate these camera lenses? The absurd camera bump that keeps getting bigger? Whenever my phone wobbles on the desk because of that camera bump I can’t help but feel anything but embarrassment for the most valuable company on the planet by market cap. The brightest minds in the industry with unlimited resources, and they’re like ‘yeah, just slap those lenses on the back, it’s ok if it bulges out and it’s off-center.’ And ‘eh, just cut a notch out of the screen for the front, they’ll still buy it, what do we care. We’ll have people saying they like the notch before long!’.

Probably 80% of people here (yes that is nothing but a guesstimate on my behalf) probably could care less about the bump and I am one of those people. Why is that? Because a lot of people go and buy a case (UAG in my case) and I have never gone “oh my, that bump is hideous, it is like having a Hasselblad attached to the back of my iPhone”.

You understand the phone and bump will be nearly 1/2" thick, right? So you phone in case will be a 1/2" brick if the case is flush.

I wonder if it would be better to have the bump run across the entire top of the device. At least it would sit nicely on a table and wouldn't wobble when touching it. I am sure Apple could think of something to put in the space.

Ugh. No. As someone who updates every year, I wanted to get at least another year out of my phone cases. These yearly physical changes are all too convenient for these accessory makers. 😒
This was my first thought as well. Every year I gotta buy a new case. I think maybe I was able keep the same case from the X to XS, but that's the only time since... ever?

I really hope the Pro and Pro Max have the same cameras. I just can't handle the size of the Max but want the best camera. Fingers crossed this year. I'm ready to buy!
This! I’ve never and Will never use a Max (phablet) size. Most important feature for me is camera. So this equal camera policy is what i’ve been longing for😛...i even can live with the bump size just to get this.

Prediction: after these phones come out, and despite the phone getting thicker every year now for a long time, most macrumors forum posters will continue to complain about apple's "obsession with thinness" and complain about the effect on battery life.
Exactly. I was someone who never thought I'd be happy with my iPhone's battery life, but every since the XS onwards they've really made it a non-issue.

I hope so too, but unfortunately some thick-headed execs at Apple can't seem to move past bigger phone = more premium. I don't even care about price, charge me the "Max" price, but just give me the same darn features without having to carry around an iPad Mini in my pocket all day.

Alas, physics may just about make this near on impossible to do, unless there's a technological breakthrough. Even periscope lenses will require a minimum bump to let in sufficient light and accommodate the sensor size (smaller sensor = less light = lower quality image).

It will be solved by Apple’s end game: optical sensors will be moved to Apple Glasses. The iPhone will do the heavy data processing. The Apple Watch will have a button for triggering the camera shutter. And the Apple Subcription Module on your belt will take care of those all-important subscriptions!

[edit] Oh yeah, I forgot about AirPods. You‘re gonna need audio feedback of when the shutter release is triggered.

That leaves room for an Apple Hat and Apple Boots. Haptic feedback from boots is a no-brainer essential.

Please refrain from suggesting more price bump. Let’s just Keep it under the improved features=increased price policy. it’s already wallet unfriendly as it is...😏

I respectfully take issue with you. The iPhone XS, I believe, is an ideal weight to feel solid in the hand. Its ideal dimensions and beautiful styling also make it a great phone. True the screen could be brighter and the battery bigger, but perfection is something we must wait for.
I appreciate the respectful disagreement. *hat tip*

I guess it’s because I came from an iPhone 6S, whose size and dimensions were already the ideal for me. [I prefer the glass back of the XS, though.]

The weight and dimensions of the XS aren’t particularly uncomfortable, but any bigger or heavier, and I would really think twice. I guess we’ll just have to see with the iPhone 13 Pro, or whatever it will be called.

i (no "pro") use my ultrawide camera in the pro model most of the time and would never change that for the useless zomm lens on a regular model. you can zoom photos digital, but you cant get more on your picture and these scenic angels without an ultra wide lens.
Please please please swap the zoom with the ultra wide on the regular sized phone. Leave the nearly useless ultra wide lens for the “pros” who would make the best use of it.

Have you used the zoom lens on the pro model? It's barely better than the wide angle with digital zoom, in fact sometimes the phone is actually using the wide angle with digital zoom because it knows that it will yield better results in certain conditions. Try it yourself, take the same picture twice, once with the wide angle, once with the zoom lens and then compare the two at the same zoom level. The bokeh on the zoom lens is pretty nice though.

The ultra wide is terrible when you compare it to the normal wide lens. But it helps getting everything you want into frame and a Live Photo with HDR colours, unlike using the panorama mode. The ultra wide probably helps judging lighting conditions for white balance as well.

Well the "strange" reason is that I don't like running out of battery in the middle of the day or on the train home from work, or having to constantly carry a battery pack or having to strategically charge just to be on the safe side. This might not be an issue if you're using one of the larger phones, but definitely on the smaller ones. There's nothing more liberating than not having to think about the battery.

The photography/videography, for me, is more than good enough. Not that I constantly take pictures or videos anyway. It's diminishing returns for users like me. I'd happily take more battery life.
I don't know on what part of the world you live, but 21st century trains do have electricity sockets, stations do have charging places, work places do also have electricity, matter of fact unless you are in the heart of amazon forest or top of Everest, you are blasted with electricity everywhere. So forgive me for thinking it is a strange reason but I truly do. Yes, I do have a large phone but even when I had a small one I had aways to never run of out of battery.

Ok, so the person you replied to - who upgrades every year - seems to be the problem here, not apple. Nobody is forcing that person to buy a new phone and thus a new case.

p.s.: people who put cases on their phones are silly. Never used on on my iphone, and never had a problem,
Why would you say people are silly for wanting to protect their $1000-1200 investment for? That’s the first thing I do when I get a new iPhone every 2-3 years. I also buy a screen protector as well but I guess I’m silly for doing that as well.
