Anyone else think the size of these cameras are getting out of control? I’m all for improved cameras on smartphones, but at what point does the entire back of the phone just become a bunch of camera lenses? The 12 Pro Max’s camera is absurdly huge in every way as it is, I don’t know if I want it to get any bigger than what it already is.

In my opinion, the iPhone X/XS were some of the best looking iPhones ever, in part because of how simple and clean the camera looked.
You haven’t seen the S21 Ultra or Note20 Ultra then yet. I was really shocked when I saw those in-hand. The iPhone 12 Pro Max camera system is actually significantly smaller, albeit still huge.

One hundred percent. I get the pro name for the phone, but using an iPhone in a pro photography setting is an edge case. Doesn’t mean we can’t want and need the best possible camera you can cram into this little pocket-sized slab of wonders.
yea, i was pissed that they called it the 'pro' display whilst revoking 3d touch functionality from it. some serious bs imho.

Same. mobile phones will never replace the quality of a solid DSLR - and I know, they’re not meant to but I wish there would be less focus on camera improvements every year and a focus on battery improvements, etc. It’s handy to have a decent camera with you at all times but I also notice we’re not looking up and enjoying our experiences anymore as we’re so focused on documenting everything.
i think what it is is when some people here "48 pixel camera!!!" they assume that means amazing quality photos, which it doesn't necessarily mean at all. so funny, i used to record a lot of the concerts i went to with a kodak zsomething and then with the iphone, starting with model 4, until i one day realized that while i have records of these events, i didn't really enjoy them as i was so focused on a steady picture :)

Why do they always keep on incrementally improving the camera when the average joe won’t notice any difference in their photo quality from the last 5 iPhone versions?

Just make the battery last longer or make the phone cheaper.

Personally, having the best quality image possible from my phone every year far outweighs whatever negatives I, or others, may feel about the look of the back of the phone.

Time to revive the "chunky style" advertising meme. Ready for an iPhone with robust girth and satisfying heft? Chunky style is for you.

I doubt 0.2mm is even going to be noticeable. Using the same camera bump between the Pro and Pro Max should make things easier from a sourcing and assembly standpoint. At least compared to the Galaxy S21 Ultra camera bump this one look small 🤣

I love hearing about all the new camera improvements but what I’d really like to see is a flush camera bump where the lenses don’t protrude.

The 12 already feels too thick and clunky. Even tiny increases aren’t good in my eyes.
Jonny? Is that you?

After all these years of measuring things in "millimeters thin," it's hard to escape the giggle that is rumor of Apple making something thicker. I've been interested to see what kind of mark a post-Ives era Apple would make. Maybe this is the start.

For me, a thicker device could remedy a bothersome design element: camera bump. While I'm not losing sleep over it, every time I go to interact with my phone sitting on a flat surface... The subsequent wobble mildly agitates. And while I've not experienced battery issues, I would be ok with any battery longevity a thicker device (and in turn, battery) would yield.

I don't want thicker phones. I kind of regret my IP12PM. Although I suppose I'm used to it by now, the edges do annoy me after holding it for a while.

My old IP11PM was the best and most comfortable phone I have ever purchased.

If the new iPhones are to be thicker, I may go back to the IP11PM - if you can still get one. They're like rocking horse sh*t here in the UK!

I want a camera that will shine in an astronomy mode. AS good as the 12 Pro is at night photos, it's not quite there with astronomy type pictures.

iPhones are getting sooo boring... From the 3GS to iPhone 7 I upgraded every year just about but now theres no reason too. The jump from the X to the 12 is boring it’s a bit faster and the camera better!

is a £1000 on a pocket camera called an iPhone worth it anymore? The whole market is stale if anything these devices should be cheaper now.

5g?for what watching 4K on 6 inch display? What’s it needed for that 4g isn’t doing now on an iPhone?

the excitement now days in a camera lens position change and a new colour to show it’s the latest.

feels like we are stuck in that period from the 90s till Steve jobs breakthrough moment, only we need another Steve jobs.

Hearing a lot of rose-tinted memories of photo quality over the years. You didn't have an ultra wide lens or night mode until the iPhone 11, and it wasn't until the iPhone 7 Max that you even had a telephoto lens! The physics of taking good photos requires larger sensors with larger apertures to let in as much light as possible. Computational photography can help improve the quality by mashing together the best parts of multiple shots, but people wanting the 'aesthetics' of earlier iPhones essentially want worse cameras.

I get you have your DSLR, but most people don't. Real photography for most people is through their phones; what they're capable of now is amazing compared to just a few years ago, yet alone since the original iPhone. But because they're physically handicapped by their size and the shakiness of a hand holding them, it's still easy for them to struggle to get a shot right, especially in low light. I'm perfectly fine with the ever-growing 'camera island' because it makes my pictures prettier instead of just making my phone prettier (aside from ergonomics, I'll take function over form any day).

The main reason I upgrade every year is to get a higher quality camera with more features and performance.

I'm not sure if added thickness and super flat edges mix well. The ergonomics of such a brick are inferior to the soapbar design that peaked with the 11 Pro (that green tint was gorgeous too).

Eh and that camera module is like Kuato from Total Recall.

It's 0.2mm thicker. That's not a major change.
