While I'm in favor of larger sensors and faster optics, increasing the space between lenses will increase the parallax shift when zooming across lenses when shooting video. The already noticeable transition will become more prominent. Small compromise and well worth it for improved light gathering.

The 12 Pro series were already 0.7mm thinner than the 11 Pros. The 12 Pro was a really thin phone, and it’s actually the thinnest flagship smartphone on the market right now, at 7.4mm (by comparison Oneplus 9 Pro is 8.7mm Galaxy S21 Ultra is 8.9mm iPhone 11 Pro Max was 8.1mm and ROG Phone 5 is 1.03cm.
That might be true but it feels thicker because of those flat edges. My 12 mini feels chunkier than my 11 Pro, and boy the 12 Pro Max is a monster.

This is true, but those flat edges make it so much easier to pick up and hold while taking video.

I'd take the flat edges and the feeling of a slightly thicker phone any day over the struggle to pick up the X/XS/11 Pro style edges that make the phone slip and slide around a table like a wet bar of soap when you're trying to pick it up.

What struggle? Never had that problem with my 11 Pro and I compulsively take photos/videos daily without even using a case.

I had an iPhone X for three years and it was constantly tilting on me while trying to hold it steady to take video. There's no surface area to grip with your fingertips on the rounded edge, and there's nowhere that isn't a touch surface now that they took away the home button and made the front all screen. I used to get much clearer and steadier video when you could hold an iPhone like this and not get spurious touch input that gets interpreted as tapping to re-focus.

Likewise, when trying to pick up the X/XS/11 models, there's no surface area to grip and it tends to slip from your fingertips really easily. I was constantly dropping the X back onto the table or my desk while trying to get a grip on it to pick it up. Rarely have that problem with the flat sides of the 12 models.

I can't use my 11 Pro Max without a case. It's like picking up a wet noodle. Really looking forward to the 13 Pro Max for those flat edges.

yea, i was pissed that they called it the 'pro' display whilst revoking 3d touch functionality from it. some serious bs imho.
Glad I'm not alone. Like for real, I'm still trying to ForceTouch/3D Touch on my phone and watch nowadays when it was such a intuitive way to maneuver and click for options.

It was such a real shame that the real good ideas are always removed soon after, or just poorly executed by people who have no knowledge in practical usages. (YES I'M REFERRING TO THE TOUCHBAR: WHO THE HELL USES THAT TO SCROLL THE TIMELINE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, DOES THE CREATOR EVEN EDIT HERSELF???🥲)

yea, this is one of the reasons while i still have my xs. i was considering upgrading last year, but 12 wasn't exciting enough to give up 3d touch. i never had a watch until last year, so i never got used to having 3d touch there. i considered buying an older version which has it, but then i'd just get used to it only to lose it in a year or two. i really wish they found ways to use it more instead of just letting it sit there for a few years before removing it altogether. i feel you on the touchbar — same situation there too. it's sad really.

Phones are a commodity, and Apple knows this. There are investing more in services and subscription, where relative to revenue, the cost goes down to almost 0 as you scale up. I almost think Apple should license the iPhone name and outsource the design of the devices. They are short on innovation, and and the planned obsolescence is predictable IMHO.

I'd rather have a thicker phone than a camera bump. I hate how we all have just accepted them. They look awful, and make going case-less so much more risky.

Anyone bold enough to guess what the iPhone 50 might look like 27 years from now?
They can't keep upsizing the camera components forever

That’s fine as long it benefits the battery 🔋

Anyone else think the size of these cameras are getting out of control? I’m all for improved cameras on smartphones, but at what point does the entire back of the phone just become a bunch of camera lenses? The 12 Pro Max’s camera is absurdly huge in every way as it is, I don’t know if I want it to get any bigger than what it already is.

In my opinion, the iPhone X/XS were some of the best looking iPhones ever, in part because of how simple and clean the camera looked.

100% agree. For me, the iPhone's aesthetics peaked with the X/XS. The 11/12 have felt like a step backwards.
I think the design peaked with the 5. After that they added the bump and it keeps getting worse. The squared sides are a step in the right direction, Now we just need to ditch the bump.

I'm probably behind the times here, but we're assuming iPhone 13 is 2022 or 2023 right? This year we will have something like iPhone 12s that will maintain the current formfactor a while longer?
For whatever reason rumor mills are referring to this year’s release as the iPhone 13, even though more recent reports have indicated it will likely be called the 12S (and is being called that by the internal teams at Apple that are working on it). I’m sure it’s because Apple jumped from 11 straight to 12 with no 11S (since the 11 itself was a body reuse of the X/XS and the 12 was an updated design). Other than a few exceptions - the 7 -> 8 and 11 -> 12 - Apple’s prettymuch stuck to the Version / VersionS moniker.

The 12 already feels too thick and clunky. Even tiny increases aren’t good in my eyes.
Thick and clunky....? Are you serious? Do you even own one? I have an XR and the 12 felt very thin compared to my phone. Apple needs to be able to add some serious battery life to the iPhone 13 and a making them a bit thicker isn’t going to hurt them at this point.

Everybody is saying that they don't mind a thicker iPhone for more battery life, but I think they're failing to realize that the battery is one of the most dense components of the phone. The iPhone is probably the thinnest that it needs to be to fit everything inside, but simply making it thicker to accommodate a larger battery would quickly add a lot of weight to a device that's already pretty heavy.

Completely agree. The iPhone X/XS are modern art. I would say they even rival the iPhone 4 in terms of design and aesthetics.

I care what it does, not how it looks.

Awfully strange to be buying a $1000 phone because of how it looks.
Exactly, Bigger battery, better camera, etc...battery a little thicker, that's fine. i'm buying it for what it does. I have never had an iPhone that I did not put a shell case on it anyway. If you asked me what color it is, I would have to take off the case to see, because I don't remember. I ordered the color that had the shortest wait time.
