You haven’t seen the S21 Ultra or Note20 Ultra then yet. I was really shocked when I saw those in-hand. The iPhone 12 Pro Max camera system is actually significantly smaller, albeit still huge.
But the S21 shoots 8K video, as per the latest commercial

Anyone bold enough to guess what the iPhone 50 might look like 27 years from now?
They can't keep upsizing the camera components forever
There will be no hardware, it will be implanted in your skin and it will capture video and picture though your eyes as the lenses

You definitely know Jony Ive is gone, with the way Apple is going with their designs, going thicker would've given him an aneurysm. They can squeeze a bigger battery in there since that's gonna be the first thing almost everyone is gonna complain about.

Anyone else think the size of these cameras are getting out of control? I’m all for improved cameras on smartphones, but at what point does the entire back of the phone just become a bunch of camera lenses? The 12 Pro Max’s camera is absurdly huge in every way as it is, I don’t know if I want it to get any bigger than what it already is.

In my opinion, the iPhone X/XS were some of the best looking iPhones ever, in part because of how simple and clean the camera looked.

Why do phones have camera bumps? Surely flat-backed phones are more pleasing, even if they have to be a few millimeters thicker throughout in order to match how thick it already is where the camera is.

The phone isn't thinner with the bump, it's just weirder. It's still as thick as its thiccest feature

Camera and battery. The two things that cause me to buy a new iPhone. I really don't care much for the other stuff. In any case, sounds like the 13 Pro will be worth an upgrade.

But you don't hold the phone around the bump, so it doesn't feel quite as thick. At least that's my guess.

For clarification purposes, the 12 Pro Max's "Back Wide" has a larger sensor, but ALL the others on ther 12 Pro Max, Front & Back, are the same size as ALL the others in the "12" family.

The article "implies" the 12 Pro Max has MULTIPLE larger sensors, vs the 12 Pro, which in fact, it does NOT !

Imo the only way to sell thicker is to make the phone lighter. Thicker and heavier is going to be tough for the average consumer. Whatever happened to that liquid metal acquisition from back in Steve’s last few years? Other than the sim ejector tool did that tech ever pan out ?
I think they also use it for the shiny apple logo on all the MacBook models. At least, I seem to recall reading something to that affect on this site at one time.

Oh wait … it may have been related to some speculation based on patent filings that Apple made several years ago. I dunno if they ever actually did it though.

0.2mm thicker? That thing better come with wheels so I can roll it along the ground like airport luggage.

(Sarcasm)

To me, this is going to be their biggest hurdle into the realm of professional photography. It will always be limited by their inability to add real glass needed for higher end lenses without scaling it to a larger size.

I don’t see smartphones replacing mirrorless DSLR’s anytime “soon”

Wrong tool for the job.

I want a camera that will shine in an astronomy mode. AS good as the 12 Pro is at night photos, it's not quite there with astronomy type pictures.
I think it's the last frontier for Apple. You bet that they are dying to show you the marketing material of the night sky.

Wish they would stop with all the camera this and camera that.I doubt professionals are using it as their main camera.
Bet the majority of camera use is just instagram, snapchat and things like that
I don't mind a little thicker case but how about making the camera sit flush with the back for a change
