How so - 12 introduced a new design and that is generally what drives new numbers. Sure, you could argue that the 7, 8 and the 11 were S cycles too, but they at least introduced new design elements that made them distinctive from the previous generation.
you're right, but that's about all they did. all of the specs got a small bump, i don't remember it getting any distinctive innovations. besides they went off their rocker with the naming convention years ago, i mean how was iphone 8 not 7s?..

My 8 is still going strong. Has never been further behind in the upgrade train and also never felt less need of replacing the 8 before it breaks. An odd feeling.

Great upgrade! My 11pro Max is a total beast right now and cannot see myself upgrading for a while or until 5g really takes off.

What about Touch ID under the display? In the middle of a pandemic, where it is more and more difficult to unlock the phone wearing masks, I won't understand Apple not implementing it on the 2021 lineup. I understand that they didn't implement it on the iPhone 12 lineup because the design of an iPhone takes years. But hell, even on the Side button, like the iPad Air 4!

I was seriously thinking on getting this year's iPhone mini, but if we have to rely only on FaceID to unlock the iPhone, I am waiting yet another year. And nope, I don't have an Apple Watch.
Putting Touch ID on the side button would also do the trick. It’s already in use on the iPad
It would be a sign that Apple loves And cares about their customers

Apple design needs a reboot. Phones are getting chunkier and uglier and most importantly user hostile design wise (think 3.5mm jack - to think that water resistance should rank higher than usability - the biggest design fail ever, face id - another noticeable downgrade from the wonderful seamlessness of touch id). The finesse and charm of the earlier phones (up until the original SE) is a thing of the past. Job's refined aesthetic sense went with him. Nobody in Apple, not even Ive (who desperately needed the Jobs aesthetic and product knowhow to curate his work), has it. I look at the chamfered edges of the iPhone SE 1 and recoil in horror at the featureless look of the 12 mini.

There is no magic physics that will make the cameras thinner as far as the amount of elements in the lens as they get to be better, higher resolution.
Sure there is and I own such a camera that is 20 years old. Lens stack is vertical (could also be horizontal) then a mirror or prism changes image path 90 degrees. Magic! And under consideration by many smartphone manufacturers, without a doubt including Apple.

This mask thing will be over before the iPhone 13 is released.

Good. Who want's a portless phone? I don't want to have to travel with a wireless charger and my car only has wired CarPlay.
I want a portless phone for a notch less iPhone, it doesn’t bother me but I’d rather keep my xs. I’d settle for a punch hole though.

Don’t use CarPlay daily so it’s not a deal breaker for me but I see your point.

Yes, that is true...periscope lens, but that would most likely take more internal space....possibly reducing battery size. They...alll manufacturers seem to be trying to squeeze in every square mm of battery. We as consumers are demanding that the tech companies pull off all there of the expression....fast....cheap....good, normally they say pick two. Plus I believe as they keep increasing optical zoom they will become bigger. So far it seems that the phone with the best camera is Huawei 5x optical zoom with optics and imager from Leica.....It is a periscope lens....and it still protrudes past the body.

It does raise the question how will Apple support wired CarPlay with a portless iPhone. One thought would be that Apple could support data transfer over MagSafe. Another idea would be to introduce a smart connector on the iPhone that could be used to support data transfer. Either way Apple will need to come up with a good solution.

And before people jump in and suggest just use something like the CarPlay wireless adapters, like those being sold on Amazon. Those are expensive and I have read mixed reviews on them concerning they can introduce some lag. Besides that does not really address the main concern that Apple will face regarding going portless.

Stupid notch. Even stupider camera bump. Why Tim Apple, why? It's 2021, we should have to suffer such aesthetic insults.
Think I agree. Would be great if the Face ID camera could be outside the display like how the camera was on iPhones with Touch ID. I actually didn't have a problem with the ”forehead” and ”chin” design of those phones. And a square display.

I actually think the 12 Pro Max looks much more modern than the Note 20 Ultra. Square corners are 20th century.
Does that apply to computer displays and TVs too? 🤔

Let’s not forget about under-the-screen Touch ID. That guy on Twitter L0vetodream seems to be pushing that pretty heavily so it seems likely that’ll be happening this year too, he’s almost always accurate in his leaks. Bringing Touch ID back + the addition of a 120Hz display would make this year’s iPhone the best in years. Only two things I’ve really been looking forward to.
I hope you’re right. I haven’t used Twitter in a long time so I couldn’t follow them (I just use Twitter to read)... And now their account is locked. Damn.

Computer displays - absolutely. Which is why I’m pretty sure macs will soon feature curved corners (there are already hints of this in MacOS).

TVs - only once non-interactive contact is transmitted without visible information in the corners :)

Less power hungry components and a bigger battery,
seems like the next mini will be a really nice device.

comparison is for the screens and notch vs punch hole mainly, with Note 20 is clearly better, other than that I really like the overall design of 12 Pro Max.
Also there is S21 Ultra with same flat screen similar to 12 Pro Max minus that dumb notch.

Exactly.
Can’t wait for this ugly and dated notch to go in history.
and I used to not care when I first got my iPhone X.
Just look how more modern and sleek Note 20 Ultra looks next to 12 Pro Max ..😞
See I don't find Samsung new design appealing at all. The camera arrays look dreadful, and they're just a big rectangle. Different strokes for different folks aesthetically. The most appealing part is the small bezels. Again, it is easy for them to pull off a notch-less design when they don't have FaceID or the equivalent to house along with the front camera.

If the iPhone 13 looks close to the renders in the original post, that's a great tradeoff to still have FaceID.

For the LARGE amount of people who have been holding off buying a new iPhone, the #1 reason why we're holding off is the lack of USB-C.

Apple, get rid of Lightning and replace it with USB-C, and your sales with skyrocket.

Thats awesome new. LOL
Well curved screen definitely looks pretty and more modern design-wise but it’s prone to accidental touches and annoying ,It’s good they ditched it.that being said Apple also were insisting on making small phones when Samsung and others were all making nice, large phones then they suddenly changed direction.

same about OLED screens that Samsung been using forever and Apple only start using since iPhone X..

point being, better late than never,I don’t care if these companies follow/copy each other at times, both are from same planet after all and there are limits to what human brain can come up with.
