Only an idiot would go with this over the Pro Max. The price difference is too close to the PM. It needed a $250-$300 gap to justify it and even then, that is a big maybe at that point.
With that logic, isn't everyone that chooses a 14 over a 14pro an idiot too? If you're in the US I think a big factor is a lot of carrier trade in values will net a 14 for free versus spending an extra $200 for a pro model. The 14 is more than enough phone for the majority of iphone users. If you're buying outright then a better value might be a 13pro vs a 14.

Because of what? A 14 Plus with a size already available with way better specs in current and older generations?

THAT we can also call a small universe of people.
Correct. The plus is not for iPhone 13 customers. It’s for those who want the specs of the 14 in a bigger form factor. It may be a small universe of people but we will see shortly, how small (or large)

The $100 differentiation between this and the pro max is too small. The pro max probably will eat the pluses sales for lunch.

I guess apple pricing strategy is genius after all. The plus is either a loss leader or a gateway to a more expensive phone.
There's a $200 USD difference between the 14 Plus and 14 Pro Max. Outside the USA, that difference can be even more. Here in Canada, it's a $300 CDN difference between the base model 14 Plus and 14 Pro Max. I'm going for the 14 Plus. I'm not paying $300 more for features I have no use for. I can use that $300 difference and put it towards an AirPods Pro 2 or Apple Watch SE 2 (or 8).

I think there is a market there. I can see my dad getting the pro max, mom getting the plus (she likes the bigger screen but don't need any extra function), me and my wife getting the pro max. There IS a market for it, but may be a weak one.

This isn't a phone that people pre-order (only enthusiasts do that, and those all want the best, which is the Pro)- this is a phone that carriers have on hand to give out with their deals to new customers. It's the default "new iphone" to always have in stock.

Sales contradict that. Obviously the general public aren’t as stupid as you think.
Nope your confusing the fact that people just want to most fantastic according to Apple marketing. They could care less what chip it has, except for the fact that last years tech is just so, well for lack of a better term, "last years tech".

I've spoken to numerous non techie people and they all know Apple is skanking people using last years A15. Also on top of that when they increase the price £100 here in the UK people notice.

Its been in the big tabloid newspapers over here, many articles pointing out to Joe public that Apple is ripping off customers this year.

I think Apple has mis-priced their line up this year. Either the pros are too cheap or the regular 14s are too expensive (probably the latter in my country that saw some price rises). Pretty much all the advice is stump up the extra cash for a pro.

Other than that, I am sure it is a great phone.

Just mis-priced and will probably get discount from resellers such as Costco, Amazon which will sort out the reported low-sales problem.

Oh and the late availability of plus models won't have helped those that wanted the new and shiny as soon as possible.

Personally, I would take a 14 plus at about 100 cheaper... which is where I think they will end-up with 3rd parties.

Maybe the best strategy is a single non-pro model. Both the mini and the plus seem to be unpopular when the Pros get all the new features.

The 3-week delay in its release probably doesn’t help either. It would be as if the iPhone 8 came out 3 weeks after the X.
This is what they did with the 11, and it seemed to work out fine. Personally I like the mini size, but it seems the market disagrees. I’m not surprised at all the plus is doing badly - it’s gotta be the worst value for an iPhone ever.

This is what Apple gets for not having a differentiating device like the mini in their iPhone lineup. First year I’m not upgrading for as long as I can remember.

i pre-ordered the 14 Plus to replace my XR. I do not consider myself to be an idiot like you suggest. I did not want to spend an extra $100 for a smaller Pro phone, and I did not want to spend an extra $200 for a Pro Max with a camera that is gross overkill for my needs and which adds an extra 20% in weight. I have no interest in Dynamic Island.

You may have hard time selling it in second hand market later since almost no one want it.
