Are we sure people are switching to the more expensive model though??
All we know for certain, after one week of pre-sales, is that early adopters are choosing Pro modesl over non-Pro models. Same thing happened last year as well.

Wouldn't surprise me that the low demand is because it simply isn't coming out for another month. Not sure why anyone is complaining about the pricing or value. Is the Plus not priced exactly as expected? As for value on the 14, we are already seeing there is some notable improvements in the cameras and surely Apple is relying heavily on the SOS feature and crash detection hence the "Far Out" marketing. Battery life will also be the best out of all the iphones on the Plus (another marketing point). It's not exactly much better than the 13 but the 14pro isn't that much better than the 13pro outside of the camera. Dynamic Island is clever and useful but will be gone (or morphed in pure software) when they eventually get rid of the notch/pill completely. A16 vs A15? Way overblown. Even Apple knew it'd be unimpressive on paper when they presented it against the A13 in their announcement... In the US, it feels like the main driver for iphone sales are now carrier trade in deals. If you're getting full value on a newer model it's still an upgrade.

Exactly. Apple is not crying about people choosing the more expensive model. They prefer it actually
So your theory then is that they replaced the mini with the maxi because the mini’s sales weren’t poor enough.

Apple leaned so hard into upsells this year and I'm so glad it's hurting them. They need to be brought down a peg. I want to see a more humble Apple at next year's WWDC.

Everything they did this year reeks of arrogance and dictating to customers what they will be taking and they're gonna like it.

I thought Apple owners were lemmings and bought every new shiny thing Apple puts out? That's not true?
Only the expensive shiny things. I mean why pay for the iPhone 14 Plus when I could pay more for the iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max

You are happy to see more people opting for the pro models over the less expensive ones and think that it’s hurting Apple financially?

I preordered 14 plus last night for my wife to replace her 11, she likes big screen and don’t take photo too much, I am shocked it deliver on Oct 7, no delay, how unpopular it is

Look at the bright side, some early reviews found the heat dissipation in 14 is improved, so that 14 plus is likely to become the literally “coolest” iPhone

Inflation has nothing to do with low preorders for all iPhone models (plus their higher price in Europe…)…

Well, here in the U.S. its $200 more for the Pro Max and if its people just getting them via carrier deals or financed at 0% for 24 months then it won't make much if any difference...so could see people going for the Pro especially this year with all the stuff where there are actual updates on the Pro Max versus the Plus. Of course the pre-order folks are probably going to be much more likely to go Pro than the market a month or two down the road.

After a couple of months we'll see how the sales figures settle out - this is partly Apple guessing what will and won't sell so well before launch. Hanging on to my current, but while I'd normally go for the Plus the $200 and all the extra's for the Pro Max would make it a tempting choice.

Would not be surprised to see Apple rectify this problem next year with a $100 boost to the Pro Max to distance them out a bit, but we'll see.

Sadly, the 12 mini sales were like ~7% of iPhone sales and the 13 mini was below 5% (article here talked about it, I think the 13 mini was like 3%)...so no the Plus will easily blow those figures out of the water.
Wel, five percent of iPhone sales is a lot of sales most other phone manufacturers would dream to have.

Well which one balances out more. Making a ton of phones that don’t sell or selling slightly more of the high end ones?

Maybe they’ve arranged it so they win either way, but I actually meant that I wanted to see that exact strategy fail so they would be more customer-centric next year.

I miss the days when it was just the iPhone and they didn’t hold back the best features for more expensive models.

Emerging markets simply buy refurbished and previous years models for better value for money.
Yea not true.

Even if it's true, then the Plus will sell well when the iPhone 15 comes out by your logic.

The emerging market wants a big-screen iPhone without having to pay top dollar for it. The reason why is that these people often only have one computing device. The phone is often their life and their work.

I'm living in an emerging market right now. The other day, my real estate agent did everything on her phone, including drafting a contract and sending documents to me.

Having a big screen is a significant selling point for them.

I, however, enjoy an iPhone Mini because I have an iPad 12.9" Pro and a 16" Macbook Pro M1 Pro attached to a 28" monitor. I don't need or want a big iPhone. I quickly learned why people in other countries love big phones. The "laptop class" of people in the US are highly privileged compared to the rest of the world.

So many people I know want a mini-sized option but didn't buy a 12 or 13 because they just didn't need to upgrade yet. Now they have no interest in the 14. I don't, either, because there's not a mini size. Even with a mini size, I'd prefer most of the "pro" level features, and the steel construction. I think Apple could simplify the line up and get more sales. Let's hope the next SE is in the mini body. And let's hope the recession subsides (that could be the main reason for low sales anyway).

Old hardware, 2 camera, cheap look case, almost pro price, who is going to buy? LOL Apple is just too greedy. News just said the short % of APPL is very high now, even traders know these new crazy pricing phones are a joke.

I am no fan at all of giant smartphones but not everyone is like most MacRumors followers. The 14 Plus is a model for ordinary people who don't care about iPhone Pro features and there are millions of them. Non-enthusiasts. These people will not pre-order on launch day or close to it. They will just buy or upgrade when they can or want to, throughout the year. So I'm not sure about this news of low sales.

I am a fan of the non-Pro line and will keep buying these in future despite being a MacRumors follower. (Next I'm going to the 13 mini from the 12 mini.)

It's because of the mad pricing... 200EUR+ price hike is keeping customers off.
You need to pay 1000EUR now for the ENTRY iPhone? wtf apple?!
And.. what for? The same SoC as the iPhone 13?

They are pushing customers away big time...
