The $100 differentiation between this and the pro max is too small. The pro max probably will eat the pluses sales for lunch.

I guess apple pricing strategy is genius after all. The plus is either a loss leader or a gateway to a more expensive phone.

The water is wet... seriously, who would have predicted high demand for a model with such bad value - the Pro Max, for just a little more, offers so much more.

The same situation as with the 13" M2 MBP vs. the 14".

Before they turned off checking stores until Friday, I could find all three other than Max in some nearby store even if it wasn't the exact color and capacity. Even saw one or two Maxes until like day three then nada.

Well I can't speak for the majority of Mini users but I use my 13 Mini in a normal way, maybe 1h-2h screen on time each day. Sometimes 2h, sometimes 30min. 13 Mini lasts me at least 2 days, sometimes 3 days (BT on only when needed, no GPS, no apple/icloud account though). And I believe that the majority of Mini users aren't smartphone "junkies" with 5h and more of screen on time. Because then a bigger phone would probably make more sense if they use their phones so much. And with a normal usage you get 1-3 days of usage.
Exactly, I have an original SE and my wife a 13 mini and they work just fine. Why? Because she has a current laptop, I have two current laptops, I also have an current iMac, we share a pro Nikon camera, and we share a current iPad. To some people a phone is just a phone, period.

Now, I understand teenagers that can't or don't have multiple devices, but that does not mean that is the whole market. I also understand tech junkies that have to have the latest tech or it is just not worth going to the bar with friends. But again that is not the total market.

Her sister and husband also have an SE and a mini 13 and do just fine. In their case they also have two large iPads.

I think Apple is missing the fact that people that buy small phones probably spend more on iPads, laptops, and iMacs than people that don't.

So the mini size factor is a supplement to other Apple devices not a standalone sales category.

Everyone that I know that has bigger phablets, lament that they wish they could get the tech in a smaller form.

Apple does not really understand the relationship between size and tech, or they let their profit hoarding cloud their eyes. IIRC Jobs stated that the original phones were all the same tech, but different sizes. I think that is the right approach regardless of Jobs changing his mind later on when BOD and Wall Street starting hounding Apple for more profits.

Just checked for the UK. iPhone 14 has a 5-day delay, none for iPhone 14 Plus.

I still think it's too early to tell especially the release of the iPhone 14 Plus is ~3 weeks away. People might not be ordering one right away.

This is 100% spot on

Apple understands the relationship between size and tech. They just didn’t manufacture a phone that meets a small universe of people.

Uh no.

Just checked for the UK. iPhone 14 has a 5-day delay, none for iPhone 14 Plus.
Just checked for Canada. iPhone 14 delivery Sept. 22, iPhone 14 Plus delivery Oct. 7.

P.S. I can't check store pickup anymore since they've removed that from the website for some reason. They are only allowing Sept. 16 checking for store pickup now.

No, this is not right. Customers want all the high end features of the Pro but at the lower price point.

Apple ripping off customers by not upgrading the CPU this year is also why it’s not selling.

We just need people to wake up and stop buying the Pro range now as well.

Once sales fall across all the lineup then things will change and prices will fall.

Hopefully then they will revert back to only having one iPhone model i.e. iPhone 15 and that’s it no iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 pro etc etc. The only difference would be storage and screen size. Everything else should be identical.
I guarantee you the vast majority of iPhone buyers have no clue what chip is in their phone nor do they care.

This is likely the reason there is no iPhone SE Plus. It’s more expensive to produce when demand isn’t nearly as high as they could hope.

Apple cancels the Mini because of weak sales—I frown. Apple replaces it with the opposite, a Plus—I frown more. The Plus has weak sales—I smirk.
Yeah it warms my a little TBH. My opinion is there are for the most part two camps of people who buy iPhones.

The first camp is people who want value. They see iOS as valuable (therefore are buying an iPhone) but still want to get the most phone for their money. This will vary widely as some value size, features, etc.

The second camp is people who simply want the biggest and best. They will buy the Pro or Pro Max regardless of price simply because it’s the top.

This puts the Plus in a rather awkward position when it comes to price, personally. Especially since most people only see $_ more a month for a Pro

How about 13 pro max, almost exactly same price as 14 plus in a lot of places? Why get the non pro expensive phone when you can get the pro?
I appreciate your help, but she does not want the pro features. She only uses it to call, text and have a camera. Also; I year newer phone=one year more support. This may be the last phone she ever uses.

I now think that a 5.5-inch Pro that is slightly thicker is actually doable. The ProMotion display should help a lot with battery life.

It may just be that it's not coming out until October, but yeah, it seems, people would rather get the Pros for themselves and maybe the regular 14 for their spoiled children.

I agree that most Mini users probably buy a laptop (Mac or Windows) or/and a a tablet. I have one of each too, of course an iPad Mini hahaaaa.

I can also agree I know a few young people with Pro Max who don't own anyhting else. It is their main device. What I don't know if they would go for the 14 Plus which is 300€ cheaper here then the Pro Max. 300€ is a lot for younger people who often spent most of their money.

But besides that I believe many other people with larger phones, esp 6.1 inch, also at least own one more mobile device. But if I wouldn't own an iPad I believe I would have bought the Max as well. The Plus would be ok if it would at least have the same chip. But not even that. Big bummer. Really big pro is only the weight of the Plus.

Only an idiot would go with this over the Pro Max. The price difference is too close to the PM. It needed a $250-$300 gap to justify it and even then, that is a big maybe at that point.
i pre-ordered the 14 Plus to replace my XR. I do not consider myself to be an idiot like you suggest. I did not want to spend an extra $100 for a smaller Pro phone, and I did not want to spend an extra $200 for a Pro Max with a camera that is gross overkill for my needs and which adds an extra 20% in weight. I have no interest in Dynamic Island.

Because of what? A 14 Plus with a size already available with way better specs in current and older generations?

THAT we can also call a small universe of people.

I usually make the iPhone purchase decisions in the house so I was prepared to move my wife from her XR to the 14 Plus. However, she says this time around she wants all the camera goodies, so I'll get her the Pro Max.

battery life of 13 mini is perfectly fine. It lasts me the whole day which is all that is needed. Never had to charge it up in the middle of the day even once.
I posted a side-by-side battery drain test here:

Results:

4h52: SE
6h36: 13 mini
6h48: 12
7h13: 14
7h15: 13
7h49: 14 Pro
9h31: 14 Max

14 Plus not available for testing but guesstimated at 9h23.
