Are we still taking this as fact? Every year it's the same cycle of "weak demand for non pro phones" and then by Christmas it's the best sales ever. I suppose if they public's it every year eventually the economy will sufficiently correct to make their predictions right for once. Then they can predict it again for another 10 years while being wrong.

All these headlines are so relative. What was your expectation. You could expect 5B units, but that's unreasonable. How many did it actually sell? Just like backorders. Is it because demand is truly high, or are you purposely constraining supply to make it seem that way. Of course Apple wants the low end to fail so they can get more $$$ Pros

I

If you read the article more carefully you’d know that the projections are that apple will sell 10 million iPhone LESS in total. Maybe the pro is selling better than they thought, but they’re still selling overall a lot less iPhones. The iPhone 14 flop is only partly offset by better pro sales, overall they are still selling less. Apple is being taught a lesson from its customers: arrogance doesn’t pay.
Along with you can't get blood from a stone. People can barely afford needs, especially outside USA

I would also see where a new 6.1 SE using the XR or standard squared off design becomes the new entry level model at 429 with older SoC.

I don’t think Apple cares. If people love the Pro…win for them
But the thing is, profit is what matters. How does each one cost to make compared to sale price? With how little was changed with 14, they could be getting more profit from it. Pros are constant R&D

Mini + Touch ID or I'll stick with my SE 2020 and upgrade to SE 2022 when that fails. There's nothing appealing to me about these new phones.

I don't see anything wrong with giving consumers more choices, as long as they are the right choices. I think part of the reason there are more iPhone options today is because the iPhone has essentially replaced the iPod. A dozen years ago, there were four different versions of the iPod available through Apple in addition to the iPhones. Today, there are no iPods.

Another even bigger reason for additional iPhone options is because camera capabilities have become more and more important to a segment of the population and therefore offering "Pro" and "Non-Pro" devices makes sense.
The other disadvantage to choices is that after years they still have no clue Pros sell way more, and they don't balance production right, so you can get any combo for regular 14s instantly, but Pros are still backordered a month

The problem with the iPhone naming is that they sound like condom sizes.

Nobody goes into a pharmacy and asks for a mini size.

Everyone going to ask for the Max size even when that’s not what they needed.

Actually maybe condom size names are a clever way to make people buy the Max???

Daddy Tim, if it was $100 cheaper would've fared much better. Made much worse with exorbitant international pricing.

as it is, $200 less for:
1 less camera,
no dynamic island,
less gen processor
no ProMotion

...adds up to not a great value for me next to a 14PM.

Just like how I think 13 mini would've fared better last year, if it was also at least $100 cheaper. Now that it is, it's also stigmatized as 'last gen' even though it can compete with iPhone 14 and 14 Plus with its SoC.

But the 'cheap' (but really not that cheap) phablet is now on the chopping block because of bad price points and in product cannibalization.

Dont tell that to anyone just staring at a spreadsheet though! They're convinced otherwise.

How is offering a cheaper 6.7" display option (versus 14 Pro Max) milking customers? Customers are free to choose a 6.1" or 6.7" display with or without the Pro level features.
It’s plain and simple. First of all even in US prices of 14 and 14 plus are outrageous….. don’t even bother to look their prices in Europe. More than tragic. Secondly it’s called milking because they didn’t use their latest cpu chip on these phones and also their latest Samsung screens. Dynamic island and better cameras weren’t enough for them…. they wanted more features exclusive to their pro line. They ve become more greedy and arrogant than ever. They are still selling an iPhone pro max with just only 128gb of storage at that sky rocketing price…..

Other than the one I purchased on release day, I saw my first ever iPhone 14 Pro in Tokyo yesterday. Really weird not seeing all the youngsters on the Yamanote line wielding the latest iPhone, which usually looks like a fashion parade of newly minted iPhones starting October.
And most of the kids at my school and their parents this year decided to hang on to their iPhone 11s and 12s and a few 13s... This year's model seems not to be selling well over here due to the weak yen. There were waiting times, but it seems like they were "manufactured" to simulate demand since one of my contacts who works at a fairly major electronics shop in Akihabara said they were only given 5 (yes, five) iPhone Pro Maxes to sell when last year they received nearly 50 iPhone 13 Pro Maxes.
I think the 70% price rise over the 11 series is finally starting to dampen even the Japanese's passion for the latest and "greatest"

It’s about each consumer determining their own price to value ratio. Those who think the phone is too expensive for the features will pass; those who think otherwise will buy.

If you think apple has become greedy and arrogant, then there are choices to be made. Thankfully there is competition.

I have to imagine the 13 is cannibalizing sales HARD. I mean, how do you sell the extra $100 price to the average person? “It has car crash detection and a little more ram”? Most people absolutely do not care. There’s no value with the 14, unless you for some reason see crash detection as a must have. For most people, who have been using smart phones for a decade without crash detection, why would they care?

I have to imagine some people in the US don’t like the removal of the sim tray.
1000% Agree! Also add in the fact that the 13 still has a sim tray. I consider myself a tech nerd and it took 2 days for my carrier to switch over my physical sim to an esim. To a lot of consumers being able to pop out a sim and put into a new phone was super easy and required no assistance from carrier.

Our family went from 2 12 Pros and a 12 Mini to 2 14 Pros and a 13. I couldn't justify getting the teenager a 14 when there was nothing about the 14 that would have made a difference to them. Got the 13 in Midnight, outside of the sim tray you can't tell its not a 14. Atleast between the 12 and 13 they changed the camera oreintation and notch size so you could tell it was different.

We’ll you sheep can get ripped off every year.

Who the hell wants the old A15 chipset how embarrassing, it puts people off when I tell them that I bet most average user people know. Dear Apple you can’t get away with everything. I’m glad these flopped like the SE3 and bigger is not always better.

Outrageous? The price of the 128GB iPhone 14 is the same as the price of the iPhone 12 was at launch with half (64GB) storage.

The 14 is $50 cheaper than the 12 was at launch with equal storage.

The larger 14 Plus is only $50 more than the regular 12 was at launch with equal storage.

I don't see any of this as Apple milking customers.

I have looked at prices in Europe and they are higher primarily if not entirely because of the exchange rate. I don't see this as Apple milking customers.

Apple is selling the 128GB 14 Pro Max with all of those new features for the same price they had sold the XS Max with half (64GB) the storage back in 2018. I don’t see this as Apple milking customers.

I definitely don’t like the esim only either. I’m forced to use it in my 14 pro, but if it had a tray, I would have just popped in my physical sim from my Xs. Funny enough the same sim that came preinstalled in my iPhone 5 in 2012. It felt almost wrong not putting that sim into my new phone as I’ve done for my past few iPhones during setup.

For $200 the camera is worth the difference to get the 14PM. And even more so the smaller 14 Pro for just $100 more. The price gap is too small. The 14+ should have been $50 less, perhaps $799 iPhone 14, $849, iPhone 14+. At, $849, optically, I think it would sell better.

Agreed. I don't think Apple is ripping anyone off. The current price gaps are off.
