Apple is selling 8 different phones on their website. The "brilliance" of Steve Jobs return was to simplify the product line.

I don't see anything wrong with giving consumers more choices, as long as they are the right choices. I think part of the reason there are more iPhone options today is because the iPhone has essentially replaced the iPod. A dozen years ago, there were four different versions of the iPod available through Apple in addition to the iPhones. Today, there are no iPods.

Another even bigger reason for additional iPhone options is because camera capabilities have become more and more important to a segment of the population and therefore offering "Pro" and "Non-Pro" devices makes sense.

Apple sold record levels y/y and if Pro are selling out that means record margins, again. If the base models are meeting last years numbers with this years pro exceeding expectations then that’s another y/y sales growth with even higher profits, yet these orchestrated articles serve to lower the stock valuation per share to cover the shorts, all of whom have bearish views of the market built into their projections,

Apple doesn’t mind this as they continue to buy back ever greater shares while leaving the dividend flat, and like clockwork the armchair experts here like a choir explains incorrectly what Apple failed to realize and how best to remedy it.

Within two more quarters Ming will have miraculously changed his projections to give large hedge funds enough lead time to produce new valuation targets that then raise the target price by 15-20 points which again miraculously hit their numbers.

Apple won’t mind as they announce record sales and increase their growth by 5+% leaving future financial analysts to label Apple not a growth stock but a dividend stock expecting Apple to raise the dividend yet it doesn’t happen (again) as Apple has their glasses now on the verge of being released and mini-LED, etc., only to reveal two quarters later more speculation on Apple car and a delay in AR thus freezing the stock again. More y/y results with new record sales/profits yet the stock remains in that comfort price while Apple buys down another $50 billion in stock touting the return to Investors none of which the Press interviews for comment and all of whom would say raise the dividend 4 fold already.

Apple believed that it could milk customers once again with a max version sold cheaper under the plus naming. Finally consumers didn’t respond to apples marketing bullying! Finally!!!!

How is offering a cheaper 6.7" display option (versus 14 Pro Max) milking customers? Customers are free to choose a 6.1" or 6.7" display with or without the Pro level features.

This doesn't surprise me. Pro models are attractive to people who want the latest tech and have the money to spend. 14 and 14 Plus are for people who don't upgrade often and are watching their money more closely now.

True sales of the 14 and 14 Plus won't be known at launch. It will take time. To judge these models from initial sales, in this world economy, is ridiculous.

The standard 14 models could have just as easily been the 13"S" models if Apple still used that naming convention. Consumers are saavy and the 14 models are just not that much different from the 13 series compared to the Pro models.

I’m going to assume budget minded people are financing so over two years the Pro’s aren’t much more. They should just do three different size Pro models. $899, $999 and $1099.

Unless they are phone junkies like me who want new phone every year (I just buy the lowest Gb pro max model $1099 now) and trade into apple directly. Approximately $30-month “lease” after trade in.

Most people keep phones almost 3 years these days. Those with iPhone 11 are just now upgrading.

Europe is a huge market. And Apple priced themselves way too high in Euros. Even the 14 is priced way too high. Yes, the exchange rate is partially to blame, but the phones in Euros really do cost a fortune. In Germany the iPhone 14 Pro STARTS at 1299.00 Euros. Compared to the USD 999.00. Of course in the Euro zone prices include taxes, but still...

Partially to blame? I think it's pretty much entirely to blame. Using your Germany example, the pre-VAT price of a 128GB iPhone 13 Pro when it launched in Germany last year was €958 which at the time was equal to around $1,121 USD. The pre-VAT price of a 128GB iPhone 14 Pro today is €1,086 which is equal to around $1,062 USD at the current exchange rate. The Apple retail price in USD has actually dropped. The issue is with the exchange rate.

Meanwhile the iPhone mini price keeps going up on Amazon. There's clearly a lot of demand for a smaller sized phone.

According to Swappa, the average sale prices of 128GB and 256GB iPhone 13 minis have dropped in July, August and September, and are currently (month isn't over yet) lower in October.

They have too many iPhone models at too similarly high a price point. Plain and simple. They need to cut it down to three variants and distinguish each offering in terms of price and features. There is far too much overlap in all the models and the prices are far too high for 2022 models in the EU.

I mean, I don’t think you’d need to be a genius to expect this…

Let’s see:

13pro old stock is hardly more expensive, and you get the exact same phone with a much better camera and minus crash detection.

It’s to everyone besides tech nerds, the “same phone” as the 13 because it uses the same SOC identifier last year.

The pricing as such that if you go for the plus, you’re almost at pro pricing, and ai think most people would rather the bigger upgrades the pro offers for not much more money.

I have to imagine the 13 is cannibalizing sales HARD. I mean, how do you sell the extra $100 price to the average person? “It has car crash detection and a little more ram”? Most people absolutely do not care. There’s no value with the 14, unless you for some reason see crash detection as a must have. For most people, who have been using smart phones for a decade without crash detection, why would they care?

I have to imagine some people in the US don’t like the removal of the sim tray. Hell, I even ordered a 13 before deciding I wanted that 48mp camera and returned it for a 14pro.

I just don’t see how anyone would go for the regular 14 whatsoever. I suppose the plus size screen might interest some, but again, at the price point, most people would probably just prefer to upgrade to the pro, which I’m sure is Apple’s motivation for basically not updating the regular model this year at all.

It’s actually legitimately shocking to me that Apple is continuing to offer the 13. There’s no way nobody thought it would cannibalize sales of the 14. Seems like a terrible corporate decision. Great for the consumer though so I’m all for it, but it makes very little sense from a business perspective.

It might be time to just go with:

iPhone Pro (year/generation for each)
iPhone
iPhone Mini

...and get off the annual treadmill
Not enough is changing to justify this schedule any longer

From a beloved mini owner -

Low sales! Don't look now, next year Tim will nix your regular iPhones, leaving only the iPhone Pro and the newly introduced titanium iPhone Ultra at $1500

In this day and age, 256GB should be base for iPhones. The prices should start from following:

  • 599 for iPhone 14
  • 699 for iPhone 14 Plus
  • 799 for iPhone 14 Pro, 512GB
  • 899 for iPhone 14 Pro Max, 512GB

$1199 for 512GB iPhone 14 Plus is just downright insulting. Flash storage is really really cheap nowadays and charging $200 for upgrading 256GB to 512GB is ridiculous.

Mini doesn't sell and Max doesn't sell, guess they're going to do 1 non-pro next year.

For the fast fast majority of actual buyers 128GB is more than enough. That's not why a Max is selling less than expected.

Like people here need to realize (just like with Macbooks) is that the fast majority of people have a couple of apps plus a couple thousand photo's on their phone (and their Macbooks) and that's it. They don't have full feature films, or music or games on their devices. They stream their films and their music and they don't game on their phones/macbooks.

That’s the thing…if you believe iPhones don’t have a good price to value ratio there are alternatives. Saying an iPhone should cost $$$ is not helpful. Apple isn’t reducing the price and people will buy it or not.
