Guardian review claiming 39/45 hours battery life in their testing

Meanwhile I used almost 80% battery in 7 hours
Leaving the 14 Pro flat on a desk for most of the day, the battery lasts about 39 hours with 5.5 hours of active use. Keep the phone in a pocket, which shuts the display off, and it lasts about 45 hours between charges.
They're talking about standby time

I am now testing the battery with AOD turned off. Let's see if there is any significant improvement to the battery life on my iPhone 14 Pro...

Previously, across 2 tests, I was averaging around 14-16 hours of the battery through normal use. In other words, with AOD turned on, I was averaging around 14-16 hours of battery.

My 14 Pro (non-max) battery life has improved. I turned off 5G which is disappointing since it’s supposed to have a more efficient modem. Where I live I have full bars of 5G and at work it’s 1-2 bars so it was draining fast at work. But, when I’m at home I’m on Wi-Fi so it doesn’t really matter. I’m getting around 10 hours of screen on time. Today I’m at 4.5 hours of screen on time with 65% battery. Glad I gave this phone some time because I was worried at first but it seems this will work for me. I also keep AOD on, only change I made was disabling 5G.

Don't mean to pick on you specifically, but people need to stop saying their "battery life improved" after turning off key features. There's almost no point in having a 14 Pro if AOD and/or 5G need to be disabled in order to get decent battery life.

I agree with you. Those are heavily advertised features that are significant parts of the iPhone 14 Pro. I’d want to use 5G, and AOD, especially with the Live Widgets and Dynamic Island updates coming in iOS 16.1.

While I agree with you, Apple won’t be able to even fix issues if it weren’t for those people who take their time to test what’s causing those issues.

Testing is one thing. The person I quoted, and many others, seem to be resolving themselves not to use AOD and/or 5G as a solution. (And if Apple shipped these devices and/or iOS 16 without properly testing AOD and/or 5G, that's totally inexcusable. "AOD on and 5G on" isn't exactly an obscure use case.)

As for testing 5G off, my 14 Pro has been at home and connected to WiFi almost 90% of the time since receipt on release day, so it doesn't seem to be 5G killing my battery life.

After moaning on Twitter I’ve had a thread with Apple Support. Whilst thankful for the screenshots and some more data they suggested the following support document.

I already have Automatic Screen Brightness on and generally keep it as low as possible in Control Center. But other than that I can’t really see what they’re suggesting.

I mean I’m not going to have Low Power Mode on 24/7 am I?

That’s a fair take on this. However, I thought disabling 5G was a concession I was willing to take since the signal isn’t good where I work. The LTE signal isn’t any better but LTE seems to have much less battery drain. I will not turn off AOD as I like having it on.

I'm willing to switch 5G off because it *is* known to be power hungry. If I need to super high speeds I can switch it on.

Current suggestion from Apple Support is to turn off Background App Refresh and monitor for a couple of days.

Went from a 13 Pro Max to a 14 Pro to save my hands. I’m really missing the battery life. This can’t be normal, can it?

This is exactly that battery life I’m getting on my 14 Pro. I think it’s iOS 16, because my 13 Pro battery life took a hit when I updated (long after indexing), and I have more features turned off to save battery than I did on my 13 Pro, and I’m still getting this battery life. My 13 Pro was getting 8-9 hours of SOT before iOS 16. It doesn’t make sense how the 14 Pro can have worse battery life than the 13 Pro did if I turn off AOD. Compared to the 13 Pro specs, the A16 chip is more efficient, the 5G modem uses less power, and the phone has a bigger battery. Even Apple’s specs say the 14 Pro is supposed to last as long or an hour longer than the 13 Pro.

I love the Pro size, but I’m desperately looking for a 14 Pro Max right now because I can’t handle battery life this bad. I think Apple will fix iOS 16, but I don’t want to get stuck with a phone with this bad of battery life if they don’t. If it’s this bad in its first couple weeks of use, just imagine how bad it’ll be over time.

I thought about returning my 14 Pro for the 14 Pro Max, but I had a 13 Pro Max and I wanted to downsize this time. So, I'm most likely going to stay with the 14 Pro and hope that it's just a software issue. But, I can definitely understand not wanting to be stuck with a phone with bad battery life as that's one of my concerns as well. It's a tough decision though because I want to have a smaller device but the Pro Max offers that comfort with the additional battery life.

Good luck on finding a Pro Max, I was refreshing Apple's website and saw them pop-up occasionally, unfortunately nothing in the configuration that I want or I probably would've switched over the last weekend. I saw a lot of 512GB and 1TB, I just can't justify the cost to go to one of those when I'm only using about 30GB of space on my 14 Pro.

After reading through most of these posts, I honestly believe that battery life is taking a hit due to 2 software back to back updates that got pushed through for the new 14 Pro…there of course is indexing that takes a few days to level out as well from set up. Try doing a full restore via Mac and see if that resolves the battery issues after a few days. Also, I believe that AOD doesn’t affect battery life as much as people think too. The display is hardly on with these LTPO panels. I had the 14 Pro Max and it was a beast with great battery life of course but too cumbersome to use daily for a week, so returned it for the regular 14 Pro (which I’m using now). Anyone on the cusp of switching from 14 Pro or whatever, I think you should just wait for 16.1 coming soon or even another minor iOS 16 update before that. The 14 Pro batteries are actually bigger than the 13 Pro along with a more efficient A16 chip and X65 snapdragon modem, so I believe that battery life on this phone will improve over time once the bugs get worked out. Let me know what you guys think.

Tip:

Remove any weather widgets on the lockscreen and let me know.

I did that about 4 days ago, along with updating to 16.0.2 and setting my Lock Screen to solid black, and my battery life has been noticeably better since. Was already getting decent battery life, but now I’m getting insane battery life. Yesterday I had 9 hours, 46 minutes of screen active and still had 38% left.

I’m wondering if there is a bug with the weather widgets causing excessive drain.
