If these images prove genuine then Apple has finally lost the plot and gone fully off reservation. The pill & hole design encroaches further into the usable display space than the notch does. Plus it just looks rubbish. Come back Johnny, all is forgiven.

The 2 cut outs look so stupid I can see people opting for the regular model and spending less money not to have a weird less functional phone.

What an embarrassment lol.

I'm really wondering why, and how they plan on selling this as an upgrade. Usable vertical screen real estate is reduced, because the bottom of the "cutout" falls below the height of the notch. The pixels above the cutout are essentially useless. Watching video means you now either have a smaller window if you block out the edges, or a more annoying dual cutout if you zoom in to fit the screen.

According to Macrumors, they don’t even notice the notch so they shouldn’t notice the pill either.
I don't notice the notch precisely because it is integrated into the status bar. I look at the status bar when I want to know the time. A pill + circle cutout is more obnoxious because now I have random pixels lit up that serve no purpose.

Not a fan of the narrower aspect ratio for the pros. That’s one of the things I like about the current iPhones.

Meh. Hopefully by the time I need to upgrade Apple will have completed this weird journey to whatever comes after the original iPhone notch.

iPhone X - iPhone 12 original notch > iPhone 13 smaller notch > iPhone 14 Pro pill + hole punch > ???

I wonder what the end goal is here (hopefully just a normal hole punch like everyone on Android already has).

That definitely doesn't look like an improvement over the notch. Fingers crossed there are no killer new features, so I won't "need" one.

This pill-and-hole design is nearly proof positive that a future iPhone down the line will have nothing obscuring the top of the screen.
I bet they already have a working prototype of a truly full screen display.

This 14 pill-and-hole design is clearly just a baby step towards that final design. Apple will milk variations of the notch for as long as possible- cuz once it goes truly full screen- there’s nowhere else to go.

But as it stands now- the iPhone 14 has drawn the line in the sand. From here on out, the notch is a second class citizen.

You’d be buying it for the thinner bezels, otherwise just keep the notch, at least it has some symmetry to to…

Other than battery percentage coming back, I have no reason why this would be exciting. I never notice the notch.

I will LMAO if the promotional video for the pro will be an exclamation mark; that they slowly turn sideways to show the pill cutout.

That or text reading iPhone where the i morphs into the pill. They really may do both.

“How do we bring excitement (!) back to the iPhone? Our newest Pro models feature an all new cutout, housing improved Face ID and FaceTime camera and we think you’re going to love it!”

Well, we thought the notch couldn't get worse. I believe most here agree the pill and dot is definitely worse. I hope Apple is not so dumb to miss that. Also, it seems to me going to that design they are missing out on a design theme they spread across their lineup and the associated product recognition.

I am not in the board rooms where they make these decisions, so maybe I don't know enough.

You both nailed it here! ?

First off, great to see Apple finally ditch the notch, which was so dated and horrible looking. It was fine in 2017, but by 2020 was already nasty and ugly.

But this new pill cutout, it would look so much better as just one elongated continuous pill, not the pill then a dot cutout separated not to it.

But whatever, it's iOS that needs a major overhaul. Last year my recent iPhone was the 12 Pro Max, it felt like something from 2010, switched back to stock Android with the Pixel 6 Pro and my goodness what a breath of fresh air.
