I was so distracted by the pill cutout that I completely missed the fact that there's a non-Pro version of the Max
I think I might actually go for that one if it's real...

First off, great to see Apple finally ditch the notch, which was so dated and horrible looking. It was fine in 2017, but by 2020 was already nasty and ugly.

But this new pill cutout, it would look so much better as just one elongated continuous pill, not the pill then a dot cutout separated not to it.

But whatever, it's iOS that needs a major overhaul. Last year my recent iPhone was the 12 Pro Max, it felt like something from 2010, switched back to stock Android with the Pixel 6 Pro and my goodness what a breath of fresh air.
That's funny. I felt like that about android and felt like IOS was a breath of fresh air in terms of UI and animation. It's been a year snice a switched to IOS.

Yep, although I like the "i" a bit better than the notch, I don't think the upgrades for the Pro Max over the non-Pro Max are worth it for most (but not all) people, given that the cost difference will be many hundreds of dollars.

Maybe this is a stupid observation, but the pill, while taking up perhaps less screen real estate, seems to still be as equally "in the way"?
a
it was better with the notch with these smaller bezels..because now the pixels from the pill to the top bezel will be useless , they cant even place icons there for DND , alarm and so on unfortunately
Looks horrible…. Notch is cleaner, now display has 2 holes in it, and the space above the pill and hole is useless. So they basically enlarged the useless area of the notch further down the screen?‍♂️
you people want to know a secret? The pixels above the notch can still be black and wiht one came hole removed we have more horizontal space. above the camea holes we can now perhaps show a green dott for when the camera is on. or even show an arrow to show that the GPS have been used. allowign the sides to include more icons such as wifi, 5G/4G/3G icon, the battery symbo l and perhaps percentage etc with more space over.
It doesn’t seem to give back more screen real estate than the notch. The difference is negligible. It’s probably a way to further differentiate the Pro models from the regular ones.
it looks like 5mm extra space to the side. thas alot of space for valuable icons

They did the same thing with the 13. Everyone dutifully repeated Apple's line about a "smaller" notch. The notch is in fact narrower but goes farther down into the screen, and the space on either side is still just as useless. I don't think Apple seems to understand what people don't like about the notch.

Pill, notch, don’t care either way. There’s only so much screen I can look at at once. Just want my battery percentage readout back.
If they don't announce some way to use that space with the next version of iOS, even just the horizontal gain (at the cost of a vertical loss) on the 13 series, then I'm starting to seriously question their thinking here. Doesn't seem to be any unity between the hardware and software team. Why do they keep messing with the notch in useless ways?

Honestly, don't see it as a big deal. Notch or pill, there's still hardware up top. Is the removal of the black bezel around the pill cutout truly giving you back a ton of screen real estate?

Also, the usual "battery percentage plz" comments. The forced removal of that number actually turned out to be one of the best parts of the transition to the notch; personally find myself stressing less seeing a more "vague" icon indicator than a hard number.

Or maybe, Apple will simply redesign the battery meter icon to superimpose the number onto the icon, like it does the plug in or lightning icon. Would be visually more appealing, IMO.

Seems about 50:50 between those preferring the notch vs cutouts. Personally I prefer the notch. I see the screen as being up to the bottom of the notch with the screen 'ears' either side of th notch being bonus space for status information (signal, battery etc). With the cutouts, the pixels above and between the cutouts will consume battery and remind me that that they are in the way of the screen. I agree with those who have said that the cutouts seem to extend into the display vertically more than the notch - I wonder why Apple didn't move the cutouts up so there are no pixels above them to create two 'mini-notches'.

I've got a work phone with a hole punch camera and I find it much more distracting and noticable than the notch on my personal iPhone X exactly because of the pixels around it making it look like there is something on the screen.

I don't care for the pill design but you won't find me saying the notch is anything but an abomination.

However I reserve the right to join the chorus of people who will say that the pill is beautiful once Apple reveals it.

Not liking it, personally. It looks asymmetric, compared to the notch, and goes lower on the screen, so will be more distracting to our eyes?

I still have to assume Apple is trolling leaker with the pill+ cutout

Why would it be a troll? It’s the only discernible way to see that you’re using the latest iPhone. That’s why this was done, the same reason they “shrank” the notch a generation or two later. You need identifiers to show off that you have the latest Apple device. The new pill and cutout fulfills that purpose.

Bingo. It’s purely branding. And unfortunately for consumers, it is still an aesthetically and functionally poor design. Has been since the notch debuted.

I wonder if we’ll get the battery indicator back on the 14 Pro? It looks like there’s not much more space than the notch and for consistency, Apple could keep it the way it is.

I’m thinking that’s the main purpose of the pill/hole, to make sure people know you have the more expensive iPhone.
