There’s an old trick of switching off 120, switching it back on and turning on screen record from control center to get 120 fps to work. Not sure if it works anymore since I haven’t been too bothered to need it.
I know about this trick, I would be fine if it didn't overload the phone, causing the device to overheat after 10 minutes of play. And lately it doesn't stabilize fps.

They **** the bed with iOS 16. The update itself was sketchy right after the update with notifications, Lock Screen, etc. My only drawback was that I traded my 13PM in with hopes that future updates would fix the fps issue. Apples on track with being more worried about new features than fixing the performance and stability issue. From a cynical, boogeyman, business standpoint, let’s be honest, this issue will either make someone buy a totally different device or buy another apple device so why prioritize an issue that could potentially make them more money lol This issue is literally a waiting game and I was surprised when the Vex update landed and all of a sudden I was playing at 120 fps out of the blue and not even a week or two later it simply stopped working and yes I was aware of the promotion fiasco so I just started up a game and the screen recording trick actually hurts fps now instead of forcing 120. So there’s literally nothing one can do with a 14PM on 16 to circumvent the issue. Definitely still playable tho.
Bingo - there's no way to circumvent it except:

1) Downgrading the OS (on devices where they even allow it)
2) Downgrading the device (for cases where they don't allow downgrading OS, but that beats the purpose for gaming)

I've been buying iPad Pros for gaming for many years and I've never, ever seen this degree of bullsh* before. Fortunate for you if it's still playable, but for me on the M2 iPad Genshin is total mess thanks to this bug and I know it could run perfectly smoothly if it weren't for ProNonsense because when 16.2 landed it worked well for everyone for a day or so, during which I stress tested the iPad to near-meltdown repeatedly and suffered no lag at all. And I can't go back to M1 because M1 lagged genuinely due to not being able to run it well enough (while M2 can).

Simple test for anyone who wants to see the difference:

Leave ProMotion on and use an iPhone 14 PM or an M2 iPad, then open Clash of Clans (an undemanding game from 500 years ago) at default settings. Then take an iPhone 11 or 12, open the same game. Zoom in on both devices, and try scrolling around the screen. Night and day.

I think the bigger issue is that Apple wont even acknowledge it in their feedback assistant. I've reported this 4 months ago and yet to get a reply back. Usually I get responses within 2 or 3 weeks. So I'm not sure why they are having so much issues with fixing this.

I NEVER planned on getting the 14 when I had my 13 but I’m in the Upgrade Program. I had both phones right next to each other and could’ve sent the 14 back but I stuck with it because I’ve always upgraded. It was one of the hardest decisions I made and it all came down to Wildrift and believing they would fix the issue since 15.7 was doing so well. I literally only found this site months ago because of gaming. Multiple bug tickets, multiple Reddit posts, multiple forum posts later and they still haven’t fixed it. It almost ruins the game if it wasn’t for other devices or downgrading devices. I could but I refuse to go buy a 13PM just for gaming. Literally won’t even have to pay for anything as I use WI-FI mostly for gaming anyway but I shouldn’t have to do all of that. I gave up on Genshin mobile a week after playing and only play on my gaming pc. I couldn’t take the fps on any mobile device. I knew Genshin was going to have problems on mobile the minute I played it on pc. For me it’s unplayable, but then again I’m just spoiled and god forbid a game actually works as intended on premium top of the line flagship devices. What was I thinking.

The most annoying thing about this bug is that there is no official information about it. There is no information how long to wait for a solution to the problem. I like 14pm but this problem makes the device completely useless for me :(

It’s gonna piss me off when it’s not acknowledged in an update and voila it’s magically fixed then give it another update and it’s back again. That’s literally what happened a few months ago when it was momentarily fixed. I honestly will probably just end up buying a non-Apple device specifically for gaming. I love the smoothness and longevity of apple devices but the 14 and iOS 16 really just fkd up the flow. I miss my androids for this reason. I never had to worry about signed and unsigned firmwares, I could flash whatever build I wanted to whenever I wanted to. My apple devices are about to become strictly communication and work devices and I’ll just keep separate gaming devices.

I upgraded from an iPhone 11 and noticed the difference right away. Really sucks considering I spent nearly $1800 cad on this iPhone 14 pro max after taxes only to end up having an inferior experience for games. And they don’t even acknowledge it.

Playing Genshin on iPhone 13 pm on iOS 15.7 was smooth as butter. Now I got the Iphone 14 pm and the game is unplayable. Just a stuttery mess.

It gets worse, LMAO - they are also deleting threads about this in the so-called "Apple Support Community". Try to post about it and see - I woke up to my thread on there about it being deleted (even after others have commented), and the second one I made about that got deleted very quickly.

I guess "support" applies very selectively (as does freedom of speech or pointing out their bulls*).

I submitted it to Feedback Assistant as well btw, not a word back and "no similar issues" so it looks like the fact that their new $1.5k+ devices can't run games even as well as 4 year old iPhones is attempting to be swept under the rug.

On M2 iPads, you can run it at Medium resolution with all else maxed smoothly for hours on end without any throttling; I stress tested it over and over again with Perfdog and it stayed at 57 - 60. Med is the only way to go (unless running Low instead, for some reason), but even then ProMotion rears its ugly head and ruins it completely unless setting the device to 60 HZ. And tbf even 60 HZ shows some lag due to PM still interfering with in-app settings, just to a lesser degree. But it isn't playable smoothly on iPhones using higher settings yet, ProMotion notwithstanding.

Overall, yes, the chips are capable and some games are very well optimized this year (Genshin is well done on M2) but the devices are total crap for gaming due to software.

Im great on pro maxes for wildrift. My muscle memory is crazy accurate with my button set up. I’ve mostly played WR on phones, it’s not worth emulating on PC. But my question is now, what is the stable device (iPad wise) and iOS to run WR at high fps. I’m seriously thinking about just buying a gaming tablet for WR next month if there is no longer a stable iPad w high fps. I hate waiting for this issue to be fixed and not getting any type of window for it to be fixed. When they had it working for a brief few days I honestly figured they knew exactly what the issue was. I have this voice in the back of my head that says “apple low key doesn’t care about extreme gaming and they’re just telling people what they want to hear”. Obviously there are people at apple that genuinely want it to be fixed but my gut is telling me it’s not a top priority. I can only imagine it has to be in the 6-7 digits of how many reports about gaming issues they’ve gotten just in the past few months. Besides the LAN and Asian markets as far as wild rift goes I Know FOR A FACT that they’ve been getting reports about Genshin way before iOS 16.

iPad Pro 2021 m1 with iPadOS 15,7
iPhone 13 Pro Max with iOS 15,7

This 2 devices works perfectly with OS 15,7 for gaming.

I’d have to find a device with it already installed because it’s no longer signed for downgrading. I’m not even sure if 15.7.1 is still signed. This is exactly what’s going to make me go non-apple for gaming in the future. I can root and overclock a non-apple at least Smh. Nowadays we don’t even have to do that anymore.

Aaaaand on top of that they're gaslighting users posting on Apple Support Community about it, LOL. Went and found quite a few threads after digging around, it's typical corporate gaslighting ranging from "your network connection" to "contact application dev" when it's crystal clear the problem is 100% specifically ProMotion/OS 16.

Humm, is it possible to explain what might be wrong with iOS 15.7.2? I am running that on my iPhone 13 Pro Max and as yet, have not noticed any problems with it.

There is nothing wrong with iOS 15 at all, the person above was merely saying they may not be able to downgrade anymore.

iOS & iPadOS 15 run very well and don't have ProMotion issues, but unfortunately downgrading isn't an option for anyone with newest devices as it isn't allowed by Apple. Simultaneously though, they also don't wanna fix the new devices, so what gives 😂

No what I’m saying is iOS 15 isn’t future proof because you’re gonna put your phone on the charger and wake up to 16 one day; period. Apple forces upgrades once it’s unsigned long enough. If I’m not mistaken, correct me, but I believe they will force you an upgrade. Very intrusive.

iOS 15.7 for gaming is probably selling like hotcakes if advertised correctly in the aftermarket. Apple has my 13PM probably sitting in a warehouse still until this day if not refurbished with 16. AT LEAST it can be rolled back to 15.7.1/2

This is why I never officially sent anything to them. They’re not only gaslighting. They’re screening any reports and sending them to outsourced third company customer service and giving them the words to say that go along the line of “send a ticket”, “what exactly is going on with what exact device”, “have you tried contacting the game devs?”, etc. MOTHER F’R, you know exactly what’s going on; if not you, you hired head piece, YOUR EMPLOYER knows what’s going on.

Then has the nerve to unleash a new chip/cpu.. no problem Steve Jobs ghost. Why tf am I now buying a new chip that doesn’t operate it’s own OS as a fluidly moving extended part. So you’re telling me that apple is more concerned with m2 than actual compatibility. Please don’t get me started at the lack of air movement/cooling of this premium POS. Apple should maybe start building planes and leave cellies alone.

Yeah, the official Apple Community forums are absolute garbage - a typical corporate shillfest of gaslighting, "turning it on and off again", "reset", myths like device lottery etc. They're a bunch of annoying ******s feigning ignorance, straw-manning and continuing their stupidity even when logically cornered into not being able to deny or shift blame anymore.

Anyway, who cares about that; the main point is that more people should get to Feedback Assistant and calling Apple about it until it's fixed. Over on the 16.3 thread there are already reports that it isn't fixed (and some people say it's even laggier).

I would feign ignorance too if my annual budget is a blank check, just opened a whole new main office, came out with the same phone for the third time and a new rugged survival watch that costs 800 USD.

I have no device on 15 anything so I can’t answer this, I’m just saying I checked the website of signed iOS and if the device CANT run 16, it’s on 15. The 13 can run 16 because I updated it then downgraded it back to 15.7 then traded it. I don’t think anything is wrong with 15.7.2, I may be wrong but I believe it’s a security update mostly. There’s no dynamic island plus change in Lock Screen customization/notification update in 15. If I was you, I’d turn off auto update and let that 13 flourish on iOS 15.

Thanks for the info. Just yesterday, I almost got tricked into updating because of auto update, good advice to turn it off.

I was thinking the 14 pro max would have improved graphics performance due to the new thermal design. Is this not true?
