I highly doubt this since they wouldn't be able to stuff all the camera and Face ID components in there. Apple has done absolutely nothing with under-the-display tech so far.
Under display cameras have lousy image quality, it probably messes with the other Face ID sensors as well.

I'm quite sure that IPhone 13 Pro purchasers are ecstatic about this announcement.
I’m a iPhone 13 Pro user and the notch doesn’t bother me at all. I don’t upgrade every year and I don’t think I’d be upset if next year didn’t have a notch. I would however be disappointed if they get rid of Face ID and go back to Touch ID. I’d also be disappointed if you could tell where the under the display tech was like on some phones. I really can’t see no notch happening yet. But if Apple can do it cool.

This is significant and will instantly and completely out date 13 Pro .
I ordered a 13 Pro Max recently to upgrade my Xs Max,should I cancel it? (It’s a new 2 year plan with no option to upgrade early)
It’s not gonna be outdated you’re still gonna have a great phone for years. Just some people might be able to tell you don’t have the 14. Plus these are all rumors. Can’t just wait for the next best thing. You’ll never upgrade.

Of course it begs the question why the massive notch on the MacBook Pro if not to house FaceID in the future. Perhaps a sub-display FaceID would require a thicker module and might not be compatible with mini-LED display tech.

Because of the thickness. That's why. It's the one dimension where the iPhone has an embarrassment of riches over MacBook Pros.

With this kind of thinking there'll be no end to chasing the newest and greatest since Apple will always come up with newer things to sell us. I upgraded to iPhone 13 Pro Max and it's a great device compared to my old iPhone 8 Plus, so I'm happy and content with my purchase until the next time I need to upgrade again.

Not going to happen. In case nobody noticed, the new MacBook Pro GOT a notch it never had and never needed. Apple loves its notch. It’s their ugly brand identity.
False. The notch is the module for the camera equipment and sensors that always lived in that real estate but wasn't evident because of the bezel. The new MacBook Pros claimed the bezel surrounding that module as additional screen which exposed the notch.

There have been lots of reports that Apple has been trying to get FaceID to work with under-screen components. It was likely only a matter of time before they got to this point.

Under display cameras are a thing. Face ID doesn't need cameras - it needs scanners. It's entirely possible they've sorted out how to scan 'through' the display with no need for a cutout.

The MBP camera component is pretty large. It has the camera and an ambient light sensor and another sensor for True Tone. We saw photos posted after the MBPs showed up.

Hole punch is a terrible design. Anything between the hole and the edge of screen becomes wasted unusable space. Why reduce usable screen space?

Any designated camera notch that is disconnected from the edge of the screen may as well be smack dab in the center of the display.

Any display that has this now is just showing that they can, and they already know they shouldn’t have.

I’m pretty sure Apple’s design team already knows this.
It will just be like how apps handle the notch. Nothing critical will be in that area. Most apps will only show content in the safe area below the notch/punch. Video don’t extend into that area by default. Most of what goes up there is the status info.

2018 Samsung-Huawei iPhone 14 Pro Max...It's 2022 Apple...
What is new is not putting the camera in a hole punch, that could have happened earlier. The change would be if Apple is able to get a FaceID system that works well from under the display. There have been rumors that Apple was working on making that work and this would be the result.
