I know they're abandoning the mini, but it doesn't hurt any less to read it again.

Also there goes my dream of a TouchID, mini shaped iPhone SE 3 with a hole punch. I guess hole punches will be 'Pro'.

And following this to it's logical conclusion - If this hole punch vs notch divide between the normal and 'Pro' models is in fact true ... What's the betting that the 2022 Macbook Pros will have a hole punch but the Macbook Air in a few months will keep the notch for the foreseeable future?

Not going to happen. In case nobody noticed, the new MacBook Pro GOT a notch it never had and never needed. Apple loves its notch. It’s their ugly brand identity.
They gave it a big notch so people will have a reason to upgrade when they change it to a hole punch.

Considering that hole-punch design is old news for most other phone manufacturers, why not use it in all four new models, instead of the Pro line only? They should still manage to sell some Pros due to their camera advancements.

RIP mini ? Had to buy one this year cause had a feeling there wouldn't be one next year. Truly the perfect sized phone.

Perhaps not so fast. Seeing the current Apple lineup with both 12 and 13 mini on offer, they might just keep on selling at least 13 mini next year too, up until the arrival of their rumoured 5.7” SE in 2023. ✌️

A hole eh? Brilliant. Only Apple could come up with a radical idea like this. Years ahead of the competition.

Oh, wait a minute!

So sad about the mini. I love my mom's, but went with the pro because of the 120hz and cameras. I would have gotten a mini if it offered those things. I don't get why it had to be the "low end" model. I think apple approached it all wrong when it acquiesced and gave us a small phone

Doubt it. It is part of their brand recognition. You can easily spot an iPhone in movies, tv shows etc that way and it subconsciously influences people to get one themselves. Just like with the home button before or the „unique“ and white-only design of AirPods

It’s not gonna be outdated you’re still gonna have a great phone for years. Just some people might be able to tell you don’t have the 14. Plus these are all rumors. Can’t just wait for the next best thing. You’ll never upgrade.
Yes but it’s a major aesthetic change (for the better)..
It’s almost as significant as change from having home button to not having one.

As much as I dislike the notch, I’d much rather they get rid of that horrid, disgusting, wretched, hideous, idiotic, pointless, eye sore they call the “home bar”.

By now everyone knows how to close an app without a home button, that damned thing even blocks your photos for several long seconds before fading away. And a lot of the time it doesn’t go away when watching videos/playing games and blocks content which is an absolute joke, at least they could make it an option in accessibility to turn the thing off.

The next iPhone could enable time travel and I wouldn’t buy it if iOS 16 still has that vomit inducing, eyeball searing, torturous home bar.

I'm also in the highly skeptical camp. Apple just shrank the notch down in size for the iPhone 13 - seeing as to how they usually love keeping designs around for at least 2 years, I don't see them getting completely ditching the smaller notch in favour of a pinhole design in the next gen.

The high-end iPhone 14 Pro models launching in 2022 are expected to have a hole-punch display, according to Korean website The Elec. The 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro and a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max are expected to feature the upgraded display, which will do away with the notch used in the current iPhone models.

The hole-punch cutout will allow Apple to provide a larger display area while still leaving room for the front-facing camera, and it is a design that Android devices have used for a few years now. If Apple does transition to this design, the Face ID hardware will need to be moved under the display.

Two additional non-Pro iPhones, which will measure in at 6.1 and 6.7 inches, will continue to have a notch, with Apple limiting the hole-punch design to the more expensive iPhones. Apple is doing away with the 5.4-inch "iPhone mini" in 2022, and is instead going to offer a four iPhone lineup in 6.1 and 6.7-inch sizes.

The Elec says that Apple will also be sourcing LTPO OLED displays for the iPhone 14 Pro models to allow for 120Hz ProMotion refresh rates, technology already used in the iPhone 13 Pro models this year. Samsung supplied the OLED panels that Apple used for the iPhone 13 Pro models, but Apple could source some displays from LG Display in 2022.

A hole-punch display has been rumored several times before, and notable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said repeatedly that some iPhone 14 Pro models are likely to feature the technology.

Ok, I’m confused, how does this trivial change enable me to unlock my phone while wearing a mask, without having to type in my code umpteen times a day, you know, something I actually care about.

Hopefully this time the leak is on the money. We’ve heard this before
Being that Samsung has had this for a few years I guess probability is good

Welcome to the hole punch era :)

What about the pill shape? 💊

2022 is looking amazing!
For some reason I like the look of that more than that of a single whole hole punch. I also like its look more than the current notch, but I am wondering if it would affect content display more than the same size ‘glued’ to the top in the form if a notch (either by requiring a larger shrink to fit content into a safe area or by obscuring content). But it might also be a tad smaller than a notch because it doesn’t have to cover area needed for boundary stuff like a speake.

However, regardless of size, shape and placement if there is a choice between FaceID and the current notch versus something smaller but no FaceID, I’d definitely prefer the solution with FaceID.

>The hole-punch cutout will allow Apple to provide a larger display area..

Well, more room to not display anything significant in that region, much like now.

Physical dimensions are very nearly identical between the 12/13 6.1” and the X/XS:

Screen size matters more for reachability than physical dimensions. My work SE is taller than my Mini, but it's still easier to reach the top of the screen (and the bottom of the screen, for that matter).

A hole punch would bother me more then the notch TBH.....I really dont mind the notch at all.....

Just got my 12 Mini yesterday, and it actually fits in my pocket, but then so did my SE 1st gen, only this time there is more screen, just enough. It really is the best of all worlds, a keeper as far as I'm concerned.

I really don't get the idea behind massive phones. If you want a bigger screen, get a tablet.
