How often are you taking pictures in portrait orientation? I take nearly %100 in landscape, especially video, so having things at the top/left shouldn’t be an issue
With all these changes it seems like Apple is really trying to replicate a classic 35mm photography experience. Might we also see licensed neural network powered film simulations?Wait the higher resolution wide sensor + rumored 3:2 aspect ratio + redesigned camera app = replacing 1x, 3x zoom buttons with focal length equivalent buttons? High res sensor means Apple can crop the wide sensor to a 35mm (and 50mm?) lens mode without dropping below 12mp standard iPhone resolution
That’s a lot more useful than the vague “3x” buttons.
the "old" iPhone 14 design was not that unique. Android's had it before. Now this new design actually make sense. I like the indicators, great use of the space. Why do I seem like I’m the only person who actually really liked the look of the hole + pill shaped cutout? I think one long pill-shaped cutout looks terrible, at least the other design looked somewhat unique compared to most of the other Android camera cutout designs. They might as well keep the notch if they’re gonna go this route, it’s not like it’s much different anyway.
I hope there’s a way to turn off the black space in between the Face ID sensors and the camera so we can actually see the screen in between them.
yeah true but the notch was not betterThis is one of the problems I have with hole punch cameras. Everything above the hole is useless because it's just too thin to display anything. If the bottom of the hole is lower than the current notch it's effectively a bigger notch.

How was it worse? If anything and the bottom of this hole is about the same as the current notch then it's the same from a usability standpoint. Then it becomes a matter of what looks better and that's just how someone feels.yeah true but the notch was not better
I think it will create a second pill on the bottom of the screen to make the pill symmetrical for videoI don't think it will be blacked out when you are watching video for example

I think the notch was a design aspect that made it unique. Now that they went with the android style punch hole it lost that. If it was for better function I would approve but from the renders it doesn't seem to be better and maybe is worse if that hole sits lower than the notch. I'll hold off till I see the event but unless it has some major improvement in other areas I think I'm holding off this time. It just looks ugly to me. I know that's just me and how I look at it now. Maybe that will change the longer I see it.I don't mind the notch not really a big fan of the pill shape but it won't stop me from upgrading from my 13 pro max.

Still zero reason to upgrade from the 12PM
The large pill-shaped combination cutout that's planned for the iPhone 14 Pro models will display privacy indicators for the microphone and the camera, according to a source that spoke to 9to5Mac.

Apple is planning to replace the notch on the iPhone 14 Pro models with two separate pill-shaped and hole-punch cutouts that will house the TrueDepth camera system hardware for Face ID, but as we learned today, the cutouts will be combined together using software, appearing as a single long, pill-shaped cutout when the iPhone is in use.
The space between the two cutouts will apparently be used to show the orange and green dots that indicate when the camera or the microphone has been activated by an app. At the current time, these indicators are shown to the right of the notch when the hardware is actively engaged, but putting them front and center on the iPhone's display will make it more apparent when the camera and the microphone are in use.
Having the green dot front and center when the camera is active will make the experience of using an iPhone similar to using a Mac. On a Mac, when the webcam is in use, there is a green indicator light that cannot be disabled, with the light located right next to the camera.
Apple will apparently let users tap on the green and orange dots to receive more information about what apps are using the iPhone's hardware. Right now, that data is provided in Control Center, with Apple listing apps that have recently used the camera, microphone, and location.
9to5Mac claims that Apple will also redesign the Camera app, moving most of the controls to the top of the display to provide users with a larger view of the camera preview, but this change is "still not entirely locked in."
When the privacy indicators are not engaged, the space between the two cutouts on the iPhone 14 Pro models will be blacked out so that it appears as a single cutout. iPhone 14 models will use a standard notch and will therefore likely continue to feature the same hardware indicators that are available on the iPhone 13 models.

Oh I’m right there with you. This iPhone feels like a nothing burger. It’s an iPhone 12s, 2……Say hello to the notch pill, if Young’s rumours hold up I will be hanging onto to my iPhone 12 Pro Max until the release of the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Yea it’s a Gimmick to me. It’s an ugly black void that will constantly stand out every time the screen is slightly bright. This is one of the problems I have with hole punch cameras. Everything above the hole is useless because it's just too thin to display anything. If the bottom of the hole is lower than the current notch it's effectively a bigger notch.

Nothing is going to stop us from upgrading from our iPhone 13 Pro Max. 🗣I don't mind the notch not really a big fan of the pill shape but it won't stop me from upgrading from my 13 pro max.
