No, there is harm and foul because they're trying to control the design of Apple's products. That's for Apple to decide, not the EU.

Well they have to comply with EU law if they want to trade in the EU so no.

They aren't trying to control the design per se just to ensure that they are using a common standard for charging and that it supports the best charging speeds.

It's embarrassing for Apple that they are not already putting a product out that complies with all of this, all other smartphone vendors are.

🙄 You know what I mean - I'm saying the EU shouldn't be the one to decide that, even though they've taken it upon themselves to.

And, again, that's not their place. Let the consumers decide for themselves. It's just flabbergasting to me how many people on this forum say they're ok with the government interfering like this. Why not just vote with your wallet and buy a phone from one of "all the other smartphone vendors" if they're so great? If enough people did that, Apple would re-think the design. That's how the market should work. If they don't do that, well, then they have voted with their wallet that the iPhone is a superior product.

I'm not ok with them interfering but on the other hand Apple need to stop putting out phones with I/O that hasn't been cutting edge for a decade. Apple are only effected because they are trotting out the same old tech year after year.

Not a chance this would have happened when Jobs ran Apple he would've demanded they moved to something better.

To say if someone doesn't leave the platform that they agree with every product decision made around the hardware is nonsense. There is far too much involved including ecosystem lock-in, sunk cost in the platform etc.

I have an iPhone 11 Pro and have no interest upgrading until they add a USB-C port
Exactly this. Was the only thing I was waiting for.
What I still find odd to this day despite everybody seeming to have an iPhone is that nobody seems to have a lightning lead when you need one.

Exactly. Like not dumping pollutants into your drinking water. In a totally free market, that'd be legal.
Not exactly. Not talking about a free from regulation market, discussing a free consumer choice market; aka voting with your $$$.
No I didn't, I just won't defend companies to the death on issues like this. I'm not worrying about my stock value so I don't need to.

If anybody thinks that putting a proprietary port on a $1000 phone which doesn't really support the fastest charging or data transfer speeds is good for anybody other than Apple I don't know what to say.
I dont know what to say for those who support regulation rather than voting with your $$$.
I don't necessarily approve of the EU mandating the use of Type C but most phone manufacturers have already adopted it because it is the best solution available for mobile devices in 2022. It's a shame that Apple has taken so long to catch up
Sure, let consumers hit them where it matters…in the wallet.

It’s not embarrassing for apple. That’s a projection. Embarrassing is “your holding it wrong.”

Baloney. With jobs phones would still be the size of the 5s.

some of the posts would have you believe there are no redeeming aspects to buy apple hardware. To those posts I say competition is great.

Yeah but all of this is nonsense isn't it.

Jobs would clearly have seen which way the market was going an changed his views on screen size. Tim Cook himself said on stage this week that Jobs would change his own assumptions quickly and often.

Consumers are locked into platforms so hard it makes it difficult to 'vote with their wallet', several people in this thread have said that they are refusing to upgrade until Apple changes the port.

No one is supporting the regulation but it doesn't effect vendors who are using the best tech for wired charging.

There are supposedly 1.8B iPhone users, clearly there are 1.8B opinions. People update their phones, laptops, wearables for their own reasons. Any phone after the iPhone 8 is clearly good enough for basic things and one upgrades for their own value to price ratio. Maybe apple was headed into the direction of usb-c because they were forced or they planned it. Either way it’s probably coming, but the hyperbole is enough to give one a headache.

That's the big issue. I still find it hillarious that the EU back in the days found it unacceptable to bundle a browser with an OS (Microsoft case). But nowadays they find it totally acceptable to bundle the OS with the hardware in the smartphone market.

If they forced the manufacturers to allow the user to install their OS of choice, then it would be easy to vote with the wallet. People would pay for their iOS or android (or use open source) and combine it with a phone they like.

Right now, if for some reason one wants iOS, they also have to buy in the lightning.

Of course, apple could also have a BTO option where one could choose the port :).

Many consumer electronic devices and appliances have their own operating systems embedded in the devices.

Personal computers have industry standard components that ensure alternative operating systems can be installed.

Apples socs are proprietary except for the communication chips (for the most part)

Well if you're not ok with the EU interfering, then we're in agreement. Sure sounded like you were for that earlier. And no one knows what our Lord and Savior Steve Jobs would do, so don't even go there. People disagreed with his decisions many times too. There is no pleasing everyone.

Except I didn't say that. Obviously the majority of iPhone users can find at least something they don't like. However, if having USB-C was as big of a deal to some folks as they're talking, then they'd definitely jump ship. It's not exactly hard to do if you really want to. However, if they continue to buy iPhones, then they're saying that, overall, the iPhone is worth it to them.

So...producing the same amount of USB-C cables is better how? Or are you suggesting Apple not even include a cable in the box?

But all that's beside my point. The government should not be interfering with the free market like this. People can vote with their wallet - they don't need a nanny-state to make these decisions for them.
When one of the biggest companies in tech turns something as arbitrary and low tech as a charging/data transfer port into a proprietary, underperforming, outdated mess for no other reason than increased revenue then I want nothing more than governments to step in and regulate the company in question into the year 2022 with the rest of big tech.

The first (EU enforced) USB-C iPhone will be a hit with consumers and I’m really looking forward to it.

Thank God EU regulators aren’t as prone to boot licking as the average American appears to be.

This blind faith in free market capitalism is exactly as embarrassing and outdated as Apple’s Lightning port.

Apple can be so stubborn sometimes.
I don’t get why we sugarcoat it with phrases like that.

Apple is not stubborn. They’re just using a great opportunity to exploit consumers and sell them outdated, proprietary cables and ports that cost next to nothing to create and also earn them additional millions in royalties through the MFi program.

There’s no Ive, Jobs, or Schiller demanding the iPhone port stays in 2012.

It’s all just Cook counting beans, greedy and embarrassing.

No, most pro photographers do not use a Mac in 2022. Also, most pro photographers, even if they are on a Mac, aren't using iCloud for their photos. For some reason, many Apple fans, and I consider myself an Apple fan too, cannot admit it when Apple makes a questionable decision.
The iPad „Pro“ ships with an USB-C Connector since 2018. Apple explained in 2018 that you need the transfer speed of USB-C for a „Pro“ model.
The same is true for the iPhone Pro, but surprisingly, there is a difference between "Pro" and "Pro" in Apple's eyes.

To make this story even more ridiculous, Apple already has all the parts and drivers it needs from the iPad Pro. But this shows the nature of Apple, it's all about the money. Apple doesn't want to ship the best products, it only wants to ship products that will allow it to make the most profit.

This strategy allows Apple to sell the iP14 twice. This year without and next year with an USB-C port imtergrated.
Apple’s idea of “Pro” is really distorted and only works because most of its consumer base won’t even consider other products than Apple’s.

Neither OLED, 90-120hz displays, USB-C are “pro” specs outside of Apple’s “walled garden” but really just standard in nearly all smartphones today and have been for many years.

Crazy how Apple apologists can lie to themselves and repeat the whole “but you don’t need it” as if a 6.1” 120Hz OLED in 2022 is some immaculate wonder of technology that costs hundreds of dollars per unit and thus must be reserved for the most exclusive of devices.

Get your heads out of the sand!

Well the language is ..

So maybe that gives them some room to put something out that doesn't charge via a cable, but there is a caveat of ..

Which means any solution that was proprietary to Apple probably probably wouldn't last long.

Completely portless phone would be impractical for most and would see a backlash on a different scale to the headphone jack/SIM card tray.
I’m not saying that I want portless necessarily. My Carplay is still wired only. Just saying I bet the 15 lineup is when they go for it. The verbiage you listed gives the freedom to go portless since it will no longer be “via wired cable”. Apple was also smart enough to start with the capability to use any normal wireless charger, not forcing an Apple standard like they have done in the past. There is magsafe obviously but is not required to take advantage of wireless charging.

Ironic that you talk about boot licking after you just licked the EU's boots. I have stated multiple times that I don't care what Apple does and I'm totally fine with people complaining that their iPhone isn't USB-C. I draw the line when people start wanting the government to force companies to design their products how you want when this is clearly not some matter of public danger that warrants government regulation like another member mentioned with pollutants in water.

I guess you need to make a list of everything you don't like about every other product in the world and send it to the EU and ask them to force all those companies to bend to your desires since you've opened up that pandora's box! You're missing the forest for the trees here. Amazing how you have all these other smart phone choices from other manufacturers, yet you insist on using an Apple product and wanting the government to force them to make it to your liking. I find that to be a revolting level of entitlement.

P.S. Amazing how I've survived just fine with Lightning port iPhones all this time. The way some of you go on, you'd think the phone was unusable 🙄

Embarrassing for who? Who exactly is embarrassed? Maybe embarrassed by the revenue due to the great products they release.

Vote with your $$$ if you don’t like apple products.

The only thing I don't like about my iPhone; that said I use airdrop most of the time.
However long it takes, I leave the phone close to the mac while I work and that's it.
On the other hand, this must be hell for windows machines and Apple cannot implement usb-c on the iPhone soon enough.

Nah

It would be the most controversial decision they have ever made, wireless charging is slow and inefficient and wireless data transfer is awkward and insecure.

It wouldn't provide any real benefit but would come with a whole host of drawbacks. Plus all of the reliable sources say they are going USB C

Because that would require people standing up and talking personal responsibility.

So much easier to have a good whine on a public forum to feel better and have that short-lived tiny blip of power that's lacking in their lives. And then call it a day.

We are mostly using Macs at work but we wouldn't use it exclusively because it's not secure. Nice for sharing your holiday snaps but it isn't a substitute for devices with proper I/O
