This makes total sense. Androids use a camera for face recognition, which is less secure. Apple uses a dot IR system and camera for facial recognition, which uses many more sensors.

Remember what Koh and Posser claimed the Apple Watch 7 would look like... the complete OPPOSITE to what Apple actually launched.

This makes buying the iPhone 13 more easy.

Another reason to upgrade to the 13 before the price increase of the 14.

I'm more than happy with my SE 2020 256GB model. For bigger and better screen I will buy Xiaomi.

I wonder how many iPhone Unit Sales Apple has lost over the years (since transitioning to FaceID), by NOT offering a high-end iPhone with a Home Button (with its traditional TouchID).

I wouldn't be surprised if that number is north of 100M iPhone units !

TouchID under Glass has, IMO, potential to trigger a surge in iPhone Unit Sales UN-like anything else the once-mighty Apple is rumored to be working on.

Apple should have never discontinued their 5.5" iPhone line.

To those of you with Graphics Artist skills, could you craft (& post) what a 5.5" flagship iPhone would look like today, in Sierra Blue ? ... the chassis would be much smaller than the 7+ & 8+.

I’d be alright with notch if they could just balance it out, put a mirroring notch on the bottom… symmetry, you know.

The iPhone 14 won't rely entirely on a hole-punch cutout to house the TrueDepth camera system, possibly meaning Apple may retain the notch alongside a hole-punch design, according to a new rumor from Weibo.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported that for at least the high-end 2022 iPhone models, Apple will use a hole-punch design, similar to those of some flagship Android smartphones. Following Kuo's report, Apple leaker Jon Prosser shared renders of what he claims to be the design of the iPhone 14.

Even if the iPhone 14 introduces a hole-punch design, it will be hard for Apple to abandon the notch altogether, according to a now-deleted post on Weibo from @PandaIsBald. The account, which accurately predicted that the ninth-generation iPad would be announced at the September Apple event, claimed that it is "unlikely" that Apple will replace the notch entirely with a hole-punch cutout, and instead, the iPhone 14 may continue to feature a notch but with a smaller footprint.

With the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, Apple did make the notch smaller in width but slightly taller. Apple did this by shrinking the component sizes of the TrueDepth camera system and reengineering the internals. Apple this year also moved the earpiece to the top of the bezel, freeing up space in the notch.

Reporting on a hole-punch design for next year, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo did not provide details on how Apple will house Face ID on the high-end iPhone 14 models if it uses a hole-punch design.

Today's rumor from Weibo claims that Touch ID will not be making an appearance under the display next year, meaning Face ID may continue to be the only biometric authentication option available to iPhone 14 users.

So, if I read this correctly, you believe that they are adding a hole punch AND a notch to the 14? Regardless of how small of a footprint, that's still a retarded idea. That being said, I see no reason why, at this stage of technology, that they can't just stick a couple IR cameras, a dot projector and flood illuminator, under the glass. The reason, how I understand it, for the punch hole camera is, the quality still isn't that great, since it's still essentially taking a picture through another piece of glass. Facial recognition camera's work differently, so that shouldn't affect them.

The reason for them waiting this long, IMHO, is because they were waiting for the tech to mature a bit more. That's one thing about Android, sure, they may come out with features first, but they are usually half baked versions. Using the public at large as a bunch of guinea pigs HRR is a perfect example of this. Not the only, but a perfect one. People ragged on Apple for not adopting high refresh earlier, all the while, Android versions turned your screen green at low brightness and drained your battery considerably. Not to mention, they could only switch between a few frequencies, they couldn't go all the way down to 10hz. But yet, Android fans still ragged on Apple anyways. 🤷

This is what I believe. Apple LOVES having their products be instantly recognizable. They won't make a phone that looks like an Android.
I don't think Apple would keep the notch to make it recognizable but I do agree going hole punch is unlikely. They will get rid of it when the tech allows the camera to be hidden behind the screen.

I honestly feel Apple won't be bringing Touch ID to the Face ID enabled iPhones. How else do they get us to buy the apple watch with its ability to unlock the phone with a mask?
Wow… buying an Apple Watch solely for unlocking iPhone?
This guy must be wealthy.

I don’t know why everyone makes a big deal about the notch. It’s not in the way except maybe watching ultra widescreen video in landscape. iOS never really utilized the whole menu bar area anyways, unlike Android that puts 173957204729 notification icons up there.

The only thing useful I could think of that can go there would be a battery percentage, but it’s not critical and keeps me from obsessing over every time the % drops by not having it.

I’d rather keep Face ID with a notch than go back to only Touch ID (of course having both would be nice).

I still wonder how many of the notch "haters" actually use a notched iPhone. I hardly ever notice or care about the thing in day to day use.
I use an iPhone 11 and hate the notch. I grew to “get used to it,” but by no means has it make me go “notch is better, it’s iconic.”

It’s probably one of those things where you won’t appreciate the notch being gone until Apple makes one without it.

For me the best evidence of no punch hole, is the shrinking of the notch this year. Why would Apple bother shrinking the notch if they were going to ditch it completely the following year?
Maybe because the notch elimination will only be on the Pro phones - so the reduced notch will live on in the iPhone 14 and future SE models?

People sticking with the old phones is for the physical home button, not Touch ID. They didn’t want the gesture navigation the newer phones had. They wanted a button they can click to close an app or go to the Home Screen. An under screen Touch ID sensor won’t solve that for them.

No way am I ever going to buy anything with a notch again, so the ball's in their court. My 11 Pro Max was already relegated to a backup phone/line and replaced by an android phone, and that trend will continue.

Apple isn't going hole-punch until they can fit all of the Face ID sensors into one small opening because why would you choose three or four hole-punches instead of the existing smaller notch? under screen isn't going to happen until try figure out how to make the display not interfere with the sensors and cameras; image quality on even the newest under-screen cameras is sub-par compared to regular cameras.
