and people still want a headphone jack + micro sd slot. imagine the lack of space for battery and/or thicker phones.

No not the iPhones, just your 12 mini, same as SE terrible battery life, which is why it didn't sell well!
The 13 mini, will give u 6-7 hrs in that scenario and the 13 & 13 Pro 8-9 hrs.
8-9 hrs is plenty for anybody and the 13 Mini is fine for normal users, stop complaining and upgrade your 12 mini 😊
Just got it last August.
But I will keep the different battery life depending on the model (mini/pro/max) in mind when I upgrade in the future.
I did not know it differs that much…

If Apple did a slim phone with less battery life (the type we all used to moan about) or a thicker phone with more battery life (the type we moan about now), which would you choose?

I’d definitely choose thicker with longer battery life. I really care about battery life plus a thicker main body would make the camera bump a bit less prominent and for the model I buy, the Pro Max, I would hope that a switch to a titanium chassis if the rumours are true would help avoid or at least reduce the magnitude of any weight gain.

titanium frame will help to keep around the same weight...i think at this point iPhones have the great battery life and Apple should not go any further with battery capacity and the weight..

They already are delicate enough without soft titanium

Personally I skipped the 14, will probably also skip the 15, hopefully the 16 will be a fresh design with some cool features

More battery is more better, IF you can do it without going backwards and making the phone even heavier and thicker

Last years prices are the same as this year, so nothing to factor in!
This year hasn't finished yet, therefore no accurate details available for the full year, however the standard 14 is outselling the Pro max & the standard pro is outselling the 14 plus, so where do you get these trends of yours from?
I am saying that you are comparing sales of 13 PM to smaller 13 and 13 Pro without factoring in that the PM is way more expensive.

Secondly the iPhone 13 is not a small phone by any means and phones have been growing steadily over the last ten years. Future iPhones seem to get larger screens still.

Completely agree. Was really hoping to have a lighter Pro Max.

So in the same year, we get a 15-inch MacBook Air AND iPhones with big batteries? It's like a Christmas miracle all year 'round.

With the larger battery, it now makes sense that Apple would add a titanium frame to maintain a similar weight to the iPhone 14 Pro when it comes to the 15 Pro. They can also justify a price increase for the US market, adding $100 to the new base capacity of 256GB to perhaps $1,199? People are already accustomed to the increased cost of the titanium Apple Watch and know if Apple adds titanium, you pay more.

I agree. When reading that article all I could think of was -- thicker? Heavier!! I was actually thinking of updating my 14 Pro to a 15 Pro to get the USBc, now I'm not so sure. Maybe a 15, no Pro might be better. Guess we'll have to wait and see the actual specs.
Maybe the titanium frame can keep the weight similar, but that may come with a increased cost. I’m waiting for the redesigned 16 Pro myself. Rumors are pointing toward a noticeable visual change in the design.

That's not true at all. The 12/13/14 are 162/173/172g respectively and a bigger battery only means more mass. If this 18% increase for the regular 15 would be true AND it would be slightly thicker (=more case volume and thus mass as well), it wouldn't surprise me if it would get around the 195-200g mark. And that's seriously heavy.

Also, that's just the base model we're talking about! The Pro models are always heavier, with the 14 Pro at 206g. I'm sorry, but I can't be the only one who finds that absolutely insane.

Apart from me running a 12 mini and absolutely not wanting to go bigger, a 14 or 15 won't be an option for me. It's just too heavy and big for me to comfortably carry. I'm no Shaq by any means, but I'm also just slightly below average for a man and I've actually tried the 14 a few weeks, but had to return it. And I can't be the only one who thinks this way. This is really getting out of hand (pun intended). Steve Jobs knew what ideal formats were. Everything from the OG iPhone until the 8 and then the mini/SE are fine and for some people a bigger phone might be fine, but for some people it just isn't. And having no options is absolutely terrible. This might be the single biggest reason where Apple might lose me as a customer if they won't make a mini anymore and also don't update the SE in a few years to include the OLED screen in the mini form factor.

My ideal format has always been the 5/5s. Both were 112g, my current 12 mini is 133g which is fine, but the bigger 12 is 162g and that's over the edge for me.

Anyway, if Apple doesn't bring back the mini, then I'm sticking with my 12 mini until there's no upgrade possible anymore for iOS and hope that eventually they'll make the mini-format the new SE variant. And if even that is not going to happen by let's say 2026, then I'd have to go the Android route. Luckily there are still manufacturers like Sony or Asus making phones the size of a mini iPhone or just a tad bigger. I also tried a Samsung A8 2018 for a while and that was just about right as well, slightly bigger but not as big as a 12/13/14. And definitely not as heavy.

Heck, I'd might even start a petition for everyone with somewhat smaller hands. Because my 12 mini is fine right now, and apart from me wanting to upgrade but having no options, the 13 mini makes no sense as it's just 1 year newer. The SE makes no sense because I'd lose the new features I currently have like OLED and Face ID and would also get worse cameras, so what's there to go to for people like me?
I'm with ya. I have a 14Pro and the weight and thickness still bugs me. For me the 11 Pro was a reasonable sweet spot between size and capability. 14 Pro is just a chunkster, and I don't do a whole lot more with it. In fact the camera software sharpening/contrast settings are worse.

the 14 removed the SIM port and replaced it with… empty space. my guess is they stuffed that space with battery for 15

Actually, what I would really like to know is the purchase rate for 13 Mini vs the other phones. In the wild, I see the big phones all over the place. But when I am using my Mini in public, so many people say they didn't know you could still get a small size smart phone. And I read a lot where - among Apple fans who know about the Mini - there is still a lot of love for the Mini in terms of wanting Apple to continue making that size phone.

Makes me think Apple could likely double Mini sales if it was actually marketed. But that would cannibalize sales of the larger, higher margin phones. But if each product config was managed for its own profitability and margin vs the entire iPhone category, I would take the Mini and try to ensure that it remained in the one of the top two spots in monthly overall iPhone sales. I think it would be easy to do globally, but also I think that Apple knee-caps the potential of the Mini so that it can up-sell people to the larger, more expensive phone.

The Market prefers larger screens, with no doubt.

I notice the side-glance stares from those with a larger phone, but this experience is a very low-percentile.

The few comments I've had have revolved around "Can you see what you're doing", and I usually reply "I can hear very-well what I'm doing." :)

OLED, no TID and 'pocket-able' crowned nerdvana for me.

I've two 27" 4K displays @home for when I want to explore....

Longer battery life is always better, the iPhone is already light…
I disagree. My 14 Pro has never been below 50%, because it sits on a MagSafe charger at my desk, in my car or on the nightstand at night. It easily deals with being in my pocket the other 1/2 of each day. So personally I would prefer not to add battery. Even though a little more weight will be OK I would far prefer that any weight increases be concurrent with added camera competence or similar; not more battery.

Just my $0.02.

Tighten your belt or hit the gym. They aren’t that heavy. Or buy a cheap, plastic Android. :)
I tolerate the weight OK but heavy phones unbalance pockets right/left. Since battery now is plenty I would prefer not to add weight to obtain longer battery.

Yes of course. But it also depends whether more people use their phones on the move or there are more people who use their phones near a charger. It’s a bit of a give and take.

I think it’s really safe to assume there’s more of the former than the latter.

RIP lightweight iPhones.
The Pro models will be titanium this year which is ~45% less dense than Stainless steel so the Pro models will already be significantly lighter than last gen. My prediction is that even with a slightly larger battery, the phones will still be lighter than before. Personally, I would prefer a bigger battery over a lighter phone especially if you plan to keep the phone for 2+ years since the battery capacity degrades with time.
