Good information to have access to along with being able to restrict to 80% charge.

The only explainations I can think of for it not coming to older models is because Apple has no way to calculate the cycles for older devices that have been used for months/years but with iPhone 15 it's a brand new device that comes with iOS 17 out the box so as soon as you start using it then it will keep track of cycles.

most likely reason is they want you to buy an iPhone 15 lol. If they can bring it to older devices they might do it in the future if enough people pressure them.
Wrong they can calculate the cycles. You can see them with third party tools. Those tool only read data already present in the iPhone.

and people with iPads are still blindsided about battery health %, unless using some unreliable 3rd party options.
That is because iPad is probably one of the worst supported and developed Apple products. It hasnt really progressed anywhere in the last 5 years, and i doubt it ever will. Android tablet competition is more or less pathetic, so Apple really has no incentive to push iPad development any further. Its basically a tumor in apple product line at this stage. It's only good for watching youtube/movies or browsing the internet. For any other a little bit more serious work is just useless

I seriously doubt these features are incentive to upgrade for anyone. Most likely there a technical reasons - maybe the chip on the battery is different?

Whatever the reason, this is not a feature Apple would keep on latest models just to promote them or get anyone to upgrade.
But its not a chip thingy, current iphones already have this data.

Iphone and ipads are rated for 500 cycles actually

MacBooks , 1000
Ipad is 1000 i believe

iPad Owners

Your battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 1000 complete charge cycles. The one-year warranty includes service coverage for a defective battery. If it is out of warranty, Apple offers a battery service. Prices and terms may vary.

iPad Pro is literally one of their best products, it debuted the mini LED screen, the 120hz screen, it has amazing speakers that somehow get better every year, it has an overengineered keyboard, etc. And iPadOS 17 brought some great changes based on user feedback.

So, um, I’m going to say: “no”.

The hardware is nice, but the OS kinda sucks. They are good for content consumption, I suppose.

For content creation, too: illustration, animation - even sculpting. There is nothing as capable in that form factor. Also, it’s quite good for office work, and I know some people who do podcasting on it.

While it can’t replace my Mac, my Mac can’t replace my iPad either.

Does anyone know if Apple will not bring this to older phones or are people just assuming Apple won't?
Nobody actually knows. But maybe it’s coming on a 17.0.1 patch that is probably on the 15’s already that come out Friday. Seems really silly if they don’t allow this on the older phones. But I’ve always got coconut battery.

So don't sell your old phone. You should still use it, this will keep your cycles low.

I've owned three over the years, and ended up selling each of them. They just sat around and collected dust.

Good to see Apple adding battery statistics & capping charge levels. It’s a few years late, but at least users have more control over how they want to use their batteries & can monitor if it’s worth being that cautious with them.

Hopefully also for iPads! (in particular stationary ones)

Charging permanently docked devices beyond 70% (or even to 100%) is actually plain stupid. It's a well known fact by now, that lithium batteries retain their capacity best when maintained around 2/3 charge state (read: 50 to 75%).

To all the people complaining how they can't get a new iOS feature on their older phone -- How many Android phones have backwards compatible upgrades? Barely can even get the newest OS more than a few years with them. Be grateful.
How many of those mentioned android phones cost 2k plus?
There are no iPhones that are 2K plus. 1 TB 15 Pro Max is $1600.

gotta stack up the reasons to push ppl to upgrade.
Plenty of things much larger than this that Apple made available on older iPhones including the XR. If the data is available and accessible by the OS then it’s likely an issue with accuracy of the count on older iPhones. That or they ran into issues on older iPhones and this was moved to a future OS update. Knowing their existing battery situation it would be ill-advised to put out a feature that could potentially be erroneous and then get lawsuits about it.

This is NOT a feature that would entice someone to upgrade. Almost no one cares how many charge cycles they have had and certainly wouldn't upgrade for that, so I doubt there is some devious reason that it isn't backwards compatible. Could be as simple as laziness. Also don't understand the amount of vitriol on here over something so trite.

So features from coconut battery (cycle count) and Al Dente (state of charge limiter) are now built in to the iPhone? Seems like those features both will both be built into macOS sooner or later. Actually macOS shows the cycle count already but you have to know where to look.

Are those apps about to be Sherlocked ?

I would not call iMazing an unreliable solution...

What is unreliable though, is the battery of my iPad mini that has degraded way too much for its age... which is noticeable during normal use... from ~103,5% design capacity at delivery to 81.4% means it's in fact 78% of its capacity at delivery...
My iPhone 14 Pro on the other hand, has maintained way above design capacity...
