USB-C has been very reliable for me. Never had a single one fail yet.

It's been the Lightning ports on 3 consecutive iPhones that have failed.
I've had the exact opposite. Three Chromebooks that no longer charge and need a replacement mainboard. Smaller IoT devices that won't charge either.

Killed plenty of Lightning cables and replaced them. I feel like Type C is designed to break at the device and not the cable.

Yep. The part that fails is soldered to the phone, not the cable. Not a great design.

Replacing a physical switch with a simple button will save Apple so much money. Steve Jobs would never make this sacrifice. They easily could have made that design choice in 2006 with the first iPhone, but they didn't.
Steve Jobs also thought the iPod shuffle should have buttons… Then it shouldn’t have buttons… Then it should have buttons again.
Oh, and he thought the iPod nano should be tall and thin… Then short and fat… Then tall and thin again… Then a camcorder… Then not a camcorder and a tiny square.
Or check out the first several generations of iPods, first it was a physical clickwheel with separated buttons, then a virtual wheel with separated buttons, then a virtual wheel with touch buttons totally separated and above, then finally a virtual wheel with integrated buttons.
Or even for a more relevant example, the iPad mute switch. It controlled rotation lock in iPhone OS 3.2, went back to mute in iOS 4, went back to rotation lock in iOS 4.3… before finally having the option in iOS 5 of either.
Just another example of the “Steve Jobs would never” crowd not actually knowing anything about Steve Jobs.

But I think we will find that most older users don't, nor can they learn how to silence their phones.
I get the point about older users. But I've been using a desktop computer for longer than many on this forum have been alive. And I understand the tech more than I care to. So, please try to avoid making ageist comments.

I work in IT, so many Dell laptops have had failing USB-C ports from daily unplugging and plugging in from the docking station. I hope Apple makes theirs more reliable.

Parts move around and change shape from year to year and it's just not the buttons and ports. The back camera layout and size can change also. I only buy like 2 to 3 cases over the span of a phone. I'm going to skip the first ones labeled iPhone 2023 and wait until later until the bugs are worked out.

Welcome USB-C. At last!!! We may finally achieve "one cable to rule them all" in the Appleverse.

Don't think we should expect an Apple Watch with USB-C.
Or a Vision Pro which clearly has a new proprietary port.

Apple lives for this stuff, so unless they are forced to streamline stuff (thank you EU!), there will never be a single connector in the Appleverse.

if its titanium matte like an apple watch ultra i think ill use it caseless with applecare

Would love to see the new mute button enable multiple layers of mute: Press once to mute all calls except from favorites (or a list curated in settings which could be family, coworkers, whatever), press twice to mute unknown callers (which is very useful, but currently inconvenient to activate), and press three times to mute all.

YAY! Now all the 14 cases are obsolete! Way to go Apple! It was brave not including the charger in the box anymore. Is it still brave now that you've created more waste?
Why can't people keep the iPhone 14 and not create waste?

Action button is too far up for it to be used regularly. Should have been below the volume buttons.

No, this will be used as a camera button to take photos when holding the phone in landscape orientation. Think about how you hold the phone when taking landscape photos. You'll press it with your index finger, so it's in just the right place.

I was hoping I could use this button regularly to do things like play/pause, perform shortcuts, etc quickly and conveniently. Even if those functions are possible, the button’s placement makes it inconvenient.

I bet the carbon emission that comes from new iPhone peripherals is offsetting (at the very least) a good chunk of what's conserved from not shipping chargers in the box💁‍♂️

The irony is that we all seem happy Apple was forced by the EU to adopt USB-C.
I’m happy with the EU. It’s a fantastic organisation allowing my children so many opportunities. I understand brexitbigots and Republicans don’t like regulations even if they keep us safe. I appreciate poorly educated people and those incapable of independent critical thinking don’t understand this. Maybe they should exercise independence and reconsider the use of Fox News or the Daily Mail in telling them what to think.
