It’s simple it’s a weaker port. The port is more likely to be damaged than the cable ask any company with Type-C docking stations in the office. Look up port issues on the Pixel 3. I hope Apple can figure out a way to make the tab inside the port more durable than other devices.

You sound like you baby your equipment. At the end of the day if I go for a hike I have my phone in one pocket and a battery pack in another with a cable attached. Killed cables plenty of times that way but never had a lightning port go bad. I am honestly worried about going to a Type-C phone. I guarantee that if I go on a hike and my phone port breaks six months from now you and all the other fans will be droning on how you should be more careful with your phone even though it was never a problem with Lightning.

I don’t want to worry about having a cable hanging from my phone on its magnetic dock on my dashboard. Knowing this bunch you will tell me I should buy a new car with wireless CarPlay even though it hasn’t been a problem with lightning.

I don’t see it as a step forwards. Also plenty of rumors that Apple is still going to throttle the port to USB 2.0 speeds to save a ten cents a phone unless you buy Pro/Ultra. It’s ridiculous. I see zero benefit. It’s not a bigger screen it’s not a faster port it’s just more fragile. Lightning was a 1000x better than the 30 pin connector.

At no point should a phone upgrade be a downgrade in durability. I should not have to worry every time I plug in my phone. Once again I don’t see you claiming that you are using your iPad while charging it. You’re not hanging a cable to it you’re not tethered walking around with the cable swinging while attached. I have a Type-C iPad Mini it charges on a table and doesn’t move while charging. It’s not the same thing as a phone that’s going to be plugged in being actively used and bounced around on the couch. Do you see the difference? Before you say don’t do that, I do that currently with Lightning with no issues for the last decade.

Again, sorry for your personal experience. It does not appear to be representative of everyone. Else, Apple would be fools for adopting such a miserable option outside of the EU... and for years now in the rest of the core product mix.

But no one seems able to write how WRONG Apple is for embracing USB-C where they already have or where they will soon. Instead, the EU is wrong... or fellow consumers excited about "one cable to rule them all" are wrong. But Apple-who basically initiated the shift to the terribly-fragile connector that apparently can't last for 6 months- can't be wrong. Nobody seems to be able to write that down even though Apple is the one who put USB-C in that first MB and have since run with it in all Macs and iPads. No law forced that- they CHOSE to do that.

No law is forcing them to roll out USB-C iPhone on a global basis this year either. That's only an EU law.

And of course, once they roll out the phone, it will be as if these anti-USB-C arguments were never made... just like the wall of much more passionate cases against phablet-sized phones before Apple went there. All the wise people who know it will be fragile, failing them every 6 months will be buying iPhone anyway, apparently over and over and/or Apple will have ALL of them in for repairs every 6 months due to broken ports.

OR, all will be fine, hardly anyone will suffer any of the problems that some think... as it is with USB-C in iPad and Macs for many years now. We'll see soon enough. The Fall approaches rapidly now.

The ports aren't as robust as Lightning. A downgrade in my opinion.
I’m not sure if I can agree to this🙂
Been using my iPad Pro 11 2020 for almost 3 1/2 years now, and I charge it every other day.
I also use a headphone adapter quite often.

And after this time the contact shows no signs of being less robust.

Replacing a physical switch with a simple button will save Apple so much money. Steve Jobs would never make this sacrifice. They easily could have made that design choice in 2006 with the first iPhone, but they didn't. Mute is important, and it would be simple and clear. My prediction is that we will go back to hearing much more "cell phone interruptions" in public spaces, speeches, services, movies, etc.

The argument now is that "oh everyone keeps their phone on mute now all the time anyways" probably because spam calls have gotten out of control. But I think we will find that most older users don't, nor can they learn how to silence their phones.
Why would I silence my phone? To start missing calls?

I would think the action button is in a pretty bad position to use one handed, at least if you're right-handed? You would need to adjust your grip (especially on the Max) or use the other hand. I wonder why they do not move it like they did with the power button back in the day.
The switch also had a bad position for right-handed! But nobody cared.

You have an action button with the lock screen button. Three clicks and I get assisted touch for example. Of course this is only for accessibility items but they are programmable three click actions in the right spot.

am I the only one who couldn't care less about USBC?
Nope. The only advantage is for a few YouTubers who shoot large files. For the rest of us it’s a downgrade especially durability. My 150 dollar phone has USBC - excitement!

And remember Promotion? What a let down!

A friend came over today and called his wife on this tiny feather-light cell phone (Light Phone II). He said he needed to remove the internet/apps from being an extension of his body. It does phone calls, texting, and music and that's it. And no backlit screen to torture the eyes. Something about the idea really appealed to me as I held my heavy, addictive/attention-demanding iPhone 14 Pro in hand. After all these years of paying attention to the newest smartphone release (or giving the slightest bit of brain activity to where the power buttons may be located on the next phone) seemed beyond silly. As others have mentioned, iPhones have largely topped out in features and usefulness. Going back in time actually sounds kinda refreshing.

It might not be any faster as C supports USB 2.0 speed in the spec. The advantage most people look forward to is one cable for everything (MacBook, iPad, and Apple TV remote already moved to C). Also pretty sure C ports can be as durable as Lightning.

I love the high refresh rate. Is your disappointment that it can’t be set manually?

nope, count me in. esp since almost not a single soul uses the lightning port for anything else but charging. yes, usb-c will be able to deliver more power, but that’s it. IMO the data rate difference is absolutely not relevant in the everyday usage

The data rate won’t necessarily go up since the USB-C spec doesn’t require faster than USB 2.0 speed. The main guaranteed benefit is the same connector across most devices meaning you only need one cable type and for things like dongles/adapters you save yourself having to buy both the USB-C (for MacBook and iPad) and Lightning (for iPhone) versions.

That design still boggles my mind. Who thought that was a good idea and why?

Because they just swapped out the AA batteries for a sealed rechargeable one so the charging port went on the bottom. The mouse should have been redesigned to incorporate a charging port properly but it was cheaper not to I would guess.

You still have USB-A / USB-C on the other side. And… I always charge my devices at the same time. How do you do that with only one cable? 😁

This was a good design. Swappable batteries. Working very well with eneloops. Still have it.

Apple: “But we care about environment”

Also Apple: changes buttons positions and dimensions when not needed to force creating new cases…

Not true. The recently released RAW video recording feature uses a lot of memory. 1 minute of 4K RAW video takes up to 6GB of space on the phone! That's insane! As far as I know it requires circa 8 hours to transfer 1TB of such videos from an iPhone to a mac via lightning, as the lightning supports only outdated usb2.0 protocol. 8 hours, dude!
USB-C will solve this problem and make the transferring of big amounts of data much faster.

Why? You can no longer feel on what position it is in. And you now have to doublecheck on your screen to see if your setting worked.

Firstly, you will still be able to feel the haptic feedback when enabling the silent mode. Secondly, you will no longer need to either check or memorize the silent mode status, as there will most likely be a silent mode icon 🔕 on the screen to notify you about its status, just like any other phone on the planet. Therefore, there will be no risk of missing a call anymore.

Nice. Just a refine iPhone 11PM series. I think the design will likely change next year since the 5 years of refinement will be up.
No it’s a refinement of the 12 Pro. That design reintroduced flat sides. The 11 Pro was last of X design but your point still stands. Apple is doing 4 years now between designs?
