ugghh... I remember holding my friends samsung Galaxy S8 Edge, and it was TERRIBLE. I held it and used it for 3 minutes and it was enough for me to decide to never hold or use that thing ever again. That crap will give you PTSD of terrible usability
Everything is a problem.

Solve it. In other words, think about it.

Solution to this is that Apple takes the screen all the way to the metal for immersion, but does not have tiuch sensitivity on the last 1/8”.

I have to disagree with you here.

The curve's tell a falsehood on thickness, create a much more slippery product in the hand when used naked (no case) and give a larger illusion of a wider case to display ratio. IF going round again, I hope not as bulging as the former 6/7/8/SE2-3/X/XS/11 models had.

Something about the 14 Pro models having the border around the screen seem REALLY thick compared to the 12/13 Pro models. It may just be me but still seems to stand out so much.
The curved design feels astronomically better in the hand and the grippy smooth glass on the back is far easier to hold than the matte slippery glass of the recent phones.

The rounding of the edges of the screen do create an illusionary aspect which made the bezels seem thinner. The flat face accentuated the thickness of the bezels despite the fact that they were the same on the iPhone 12 Pro.

Who holds their iphone on the glass (front)?
The iphone 8 was not grippy, nor was the X/XS or the 11 series, but thats a difference of opinion. The rounding of the edges made the phone seem larger than it was, something I personally disliked.

The 6 series, 7 series, 8, and X/XS and 11 series all had a 2.5D curved display glass, not flat like the 12/13/14 series models. Yet comparing, in-person/Apple's online photos, the 12/13 series seemed to have a smaller bezels than the 14 pro models.

I'm just glad the 12/13 mini's actually do have a smaller bezel which I'm hoping for in iPhones going forward if not smaller. I worry it's an asthetic choice :(

It’s an objective fact that the smooth glass is far more grippy than matte glass.

Anytime a human pulls their phone out of their pocket or a bag their fingers are gripping against the back and front of the phone. The matte glass increases the chance of it slipping out of hands by a huge amount.

People also place their fingers in particular their meds finger against the back glass to hold the phone and during phone calls. Anytime they’re holding it with 2 hands several fingers are against the back of the phone to hold onto it.

The back being the far more slippery matte increases drops by a huge amount.

I’m just HOPING that Apple isn’t stupid enough to make the sides matte titanium. If the sides are more slippery than the perfect and very grippy stainless then I’ll just not buy the garbage. Grip is all that matters.

Not that I have the least bit of interest in a 15 Pro, but returning to curved edges would be a right pain in regards to grip IMO. It makes the device slightly bigger too and with a 6.7” device that can make quite a difference. It does feel a bit like rinse and repeat for Apple as this type of cycle just detracts away from the lack of meaningful features.

Let's go back to something similar to the 11 Pro. Curvy and easy to hold.
I sent my 14 pro max back after Apple's month trial period because it was so chonktabulous. Square AF profile meant that the case was almost 1cm from front to back and stright sided. Seriously felt a real step backwards from the 11 Pro Max and 8 plus which I still own. Sure the iPhone 4 looked better and was built better than the iPhone 3 but in the hand, the 3 was miles ahead. The 4 was cold and hard, much like its designer.

Design mistakes of the last few generations.

1. Thick AF.
2. Heavy AF.
3. Camera knobbly AF.
4. Slippery AF.
5. EXPENSIVE AF.

IMO, of course.
Some people like thick, slippery, knobbly things

Is such an incremental design update just there to keep the design employees from running away?

Exactly, it feels that the iPhone design / new features (overall all smartphones) have hit a brick wall. We are going in circles and the days of upgrading every year are long gone.

Phones have reached their peak so much so that now they are rehashing and reusing previous designs and passing it off as 'innovation'. They'll call it the most beautiful iPhone ever - if that was the case then why switch from a curved to a straight edge in the first place.

From being a yearly upgrader (paid up front in full) I'm still happy with my 13PM. There's not enough in it to justify the cost of 'upgrading' any more - for me anyways. I don't want that initial excited setup phase, and then 20 mins in its just that 'meh, more of the same' feeling.

Even this year, it'll take more then a periscope lens, USB-C (only ever use the port to charge anyways!), and a curved display to tempt me to upgrade. These are small upgrades (if you can even call them that) that just do not justify the ever increasing cost.

Damn thing was hard to hold comfortably, if you didnt hold it right(yeah yeah i know) you caused unwanted taps on the screen by its curved sides. So you had to hold it perfectly aligned in your hand so the wraped parts of the screen werent touching your hand. And that was quite uncomfortable.

Personally I’d like it a bit thicker, easier to hold and hopefully a bigger battery 🪫

+ no camera bump

Someone queue up the Michael Scott "Noooooooooo" gif.

Seriously. I appreciated the design ushered in with the iPhone 6 series and it will always hold a special place in my heart, but screen protectors were a nightmare for years because of it.

On top of that, all of Apple's design language save for the Watch and Home Pods has moved to the flat iPhone 4/iPad Pro design AND WE'RE BETTER FOR IT.

Yeah you have absolutely no clue what you’re talking about.

The iPhone 6 all the way through iPhone XS did not have curved screens buddy. It was curved edges.

Curved edges feel far more comfortable in the hand than sharp square edges. That’s an objective fact about humans. Sorry you literally can’t argue it.

Now go get yourself a square steering wheel, change your door knobs to squares, etc etc.

Enjoy

Bad take

So that means I'd have to buy a Whitestone Dome Glass protector if the glass edges are curved. BFD.

It's a more objective fact that not ALL glass is made the same, nor has the same surface tension. I've never pulled ANY smartphone or feature phone out of my pockets holding the front and back of the device, ONLY the edge.

I've been using phones since the Ericsson T18z was released (greyscale days of phones), so out the window goes your human pulls nonsense. Also I know a LOT of people personally, and across many corporations do NOT hold their meds/middle finger against the back glass of the phone during calls. Again I typically hold the edge. I think if you're phone is beyond 6.5" like an iPhone Pro Max then maybe so, not the average phone size of 6-6.3".

Depends on HOW you're holding your phone.

IF you're NOT holding your phone during just 1 finger swiping, navigation, browsing web, navigation through applications, or during a phone call (without headset/speaker phone) and it's NOT an iPhone Pro Max typically you'd be holding it in the palm, centered, in 1 hand, with the heel of your thumb on 1 edge, and 2-3 finger tips on the other edge.

google search 'hands holding a smartphone'

The top 4/5 images shows this:

the 5th image shows this: where an index finger is resting the back of the phone.

of the 5 images I can see the 2nd above resembles any iphone with face ID upwards.

Lol did you read that? Apparently not
