Samsung Display is developing new under-panel camera technology that Apple plans to use to hide Face ID under the display on next year's tentatively named "iPhone 15 Pro" models, according to sources cited by Korean website The Elec.

While rumors suggest that this year's "iPhone 14 Pro" models will feature both a "hole-punch" and a pill-shaped cutout for the front camera and Face ID components, respectively, today's report claims that Apple is planning for iPhone 15 Pro models to have only a hole for the front camera, with Face ID appearing hidden under the display.

Samsung's technology would effectively make Face ID sensors look invisible to the naked eye, in a similar manner as the hidden under-display camera on its Galaxy Z Fold3 smartphone, according to the report. On the Fold3, the pixel density over the under-display camera is lower compared to the rest of the display to allow light to reach the camera, but this results in the camera producing relatively low-quality photos.

It remains to be seen if the under-display version of Face ID would be as effective or secure as the existing system in a notch, or if there would be any other tradeoffs. Samsung is said to be collaborating with Canada's OTI Lumionics to develop the technology.

In its Korean-language version of the report, The Elec said Samsung first plans to apply the technology to its so-called "Galaxy Z Fold5" next year if development is completed on schedule, followed by the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

This is far from the first time that under-display Face ID has been rumored for the iPhone. In an April 2021 research note, reputable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that he expected Apple to adopt under-display Face ID for at least one new iPhone model launching in 2023, but he did not provide any further details at the time. Display industry consultant Ross Young also claimed Face ID would not be moved under the display until at least 2023.

Lol iPhone 14 isn't even out and people already getting their mind crazy over iPhone 15 SMH

When members say this, I always like to ask, then what do you think that Apple should be doing that should be innovating more? Try to be specific with your answer.
Simply add an USB-Port. Integrated TouchID.

All those components are available in high quality. Prople are waiting for it.

Apple could do a refreshed SE with only integrated TouchID and full screen LCD, leaving FaceID behind for a better price. I would get one.

Software - leave us alone with major updates every year. Major updates and stability/performance uüdates should follow each other.

Right, the iPhone 14 has not been released, but it’s been finalized. So some of these production/manufacturing companies likely have some insight to what possibly holds for the following year, however; how much of that is actually relative to facts, is the uncertainty.

Samsungs fold 3 inner display camera isn’t anywhere near as good or hidden as the Zte axon 30’s. I’d say Apple should wait and not do a punch hole at all. If you didn’t know in the iPhone 13 phones the reduced notch no longer has the ambient light sensor inside it they put it under the display. Alongside the proximity sensor if I’m not mistaken.

No. Nothing is hidden under the display. The speaker was just moved up and the sensors changed order. That’s all.

I will wait till iphone 16 pro maybe and hold on to the gigantic 13 pro max. The iPhone, MacOS devices, AND the iPad have not done anything remotely interesting OR AMAZING since Face ID .

It's not all about processors for these Mac devices and iPads with 100 core M1 PROCESSORS scattered all over in various combinations while allowing Apple to overprice custom Arm core mobile processors in their supposedly best devices that will be outdated by Fall)

If they were interesting or amazing to anyone, then you failed to used other technologies out there. The rest of their tech and any of their OS's ( besides their processors and Samsung's displays) feels outdated.

IPhone 15 or 16 rumoured to have no camera bump or only marginal bump.

You heard it here first :p

From Wikipedia:

“The Face ID hardware consists of a sensor with three modules; a dot projector that projects a grid of small infrared dots onto a user's face, a module called the flood illuminator that shines infrared light at the face, and an infrared camera which takes an infrared picture of the user, reads the resulting pattern and generates a 3D facial map”

So is a lot more complicated than just put a camera under the display. Fake news.

No way that Apple will change punch hole/pill screen for at least the next two-three new models. They want us to buy the latest phones year by year updating just a little something. Punch hole to zero notch or pill within a year would be a huge upgrade. Not to mention if the next iphone will eventually be getting a usb-c port.

I feel like rather than upgrading yearly or every two years the iPhone is now on a 4-5 year cycle to get any reasonable amount of innovation to customers.

awesome news about the iPhone 15.

any news about the iPhone 16? I can't wait! :)

(and if it's not too much trouble, any news about the 20th anniversary edition? iPhone XX or 20?

Is this going to be above or beneath the fold? And I hope it doesn't interfere with the under screen thumb print sensor at the bottom!

3 year upgrade cycle it is then. iPhone 12 is more than good enough for now.

X, XS, and 11(Pro) were all the same cycle. 12, 13 and 14 should be too.

However, there's always the option that Apple pulls a "2017"-style lineup on us, and launches two very different iPhones: A iPhone 14 that's really just a spec bumped (standard, non-Pro) iPhone 13, and then a true successor to iPhones 13 Pro that's a new, overhauled design with many new features.

Leaks do seem to suggest that upgrades to the non-Pro iPhone 14 will be limited by comparison to iPhone 14 Pro. So it's definitely a likely scenario even if it sort of breaks the 3-year cycle a bit.

On another note, iPhone 5, iPhone 6, and iPhone X all had three or more iterations (counting SE 1st Gen, 5c, SE 2020, SE 2022). So even if the 12 design doesn't make it to the iPhone 14(2022) lineup, I still think Apple will recycle it for some new SE or something down the line.

Yep. iPhone 15 is where it is at.
Well, I certainly would be dropping my jaw on the floor if Apple makes iPhones 15 another repeat of the 12/13 designs.

But for iPhone 14, I'm not so sure that Apple goes all in on a new design. If then probably only for the Pro.

I would be really shocked if Apple made upgrades to the appearance of the FaceID/front camera 3 years in a row.

Why bother with the pill plus hole punch if this is coming soon?

That being said of course it would be fantastic if this is the eventual design direction. I don’t think Apple needs to worry about branding so much these days. Everyone knows what an iPhone is. Having a hole punch is not going to make the iPhone any less iPhone.
