I don't understand why they don't work on bringing TouchID back. It is far superior in ease of use. FaceID makes sense on an iPad and Mac but not a phone. TouchID makes sense on phone.

Insert Ron Burgundy 'I don't believe you' meme here. Well at least for this arriving next year.

I'm sure we'll eventually get there with the Face ID tech, but I do feel there will always be a front facing camera cut out of some kind as there's always a trade off with camera quality. Camera's need light, covering them with a screen allows less light to reach the lens, hence worse quality photos. And there isn't any way to get around this. Yes you could have software which tries to increase the quality of the photo but you're starting from a worse position and quality will never be as good.

And given the size of the ever growing camera bumps it's clear that quality trumps all. You could have a nice flat backed, light weight iPhone but as camera quality would suffer this isn't offered. It will be the same for front cameras.

If the rumours are to be believed that Apple are ditching the notch for a pill and hole cutout for the iPhone 14 then I can't then see them moving away from this a year later. Maybe in a few years we might see something.

As an aside, they really have to re-think the iPhone numbering scheme. We're getting deep into 2-digit numbers now, who has the mental space to keep track? What do I have now? 11? 12? 13? One of those. Which one came out last fall? Was it the 12? 12S? 13?

I think they should just refer to them by year of introduction, like Macbooks. It should just be the iPhone (late-2022).

The 14 isn’t even out yet ?

Crikey I love a good rumour as much as anyone , but slow down George
Yes! It never made sense to me to speculate on "the next thing.. after the next thing".

Like, sure, there might be leaks. But Apple is always testing prototypes and still making crucial decisions for iPhone 14.

Speculating about iPhone 15 only makes sense once we confidently know what iPhone 14 actually is which usually only happens at the actual iPhone 14 launch.

The final reason to keep holding on to my 8 PLUS before upgrading.
I had the 8 Plus and I really loved it. Unfortunately the battery started degrading, and with no Apple store nearby, I opted to upgrade to the iPhone 11. But like you, I think I’m going to stick with the 11 as long as I can until Apple comes up with a better design. Really hoping the hole punch and pill design is a false rumor.

I said I wouldn’t upgrade my iPhone x with a cracked screen and weak battery until the notch (and all of its successors, e.g. a black hole) is gone. Looks like I’m going to be staring at that crack for quite a bit longer…
Battery replacement will get you through another 2-3 years of the same phone being re-released! Long live the notch.... Innovation at its very best. /S

I plan on hanging on to my 12 Pro for quite some time.

Can someone explain the obsession with "hole punch" cameras, and pill shaped holes in the screen? Why not just have a tiny notch at the top? It'd intrude less into the display than a hole or a pill cutout; the space above those is effectively wasted and I'm sure it makes manufacturing more difficult.

A screen with a notch the same size as the pill+hole we've seen in mockups would look better than this and waste less screen area.

No big rumors on the 14, because there are no changes in this year’s Iphone!.
A bit faster CPU?, a more mega pixels camera?. That is it?. Apple, please copy the chines phone makers, they had some very cool ideas since many years ago that iPhone is currently lacking.
At least put a usbC port!.
And bring back Touch ID!!!!
I can see the slogans this year: “The best camera in an iPhone, ever”, “a leap forward in megapixels in an iPhone”.
Shame, shame, shame.

I don’t know if the pandemic has warped my perception of time, but I’ve heard this rumor for the past 15 years.
Exactly. Keeps getting pushed back.

When I was a kid, I remember there was a cult leader in Asia who kept predicting a large stock market crash. After about 17 years, he was right.

There are many things that will eventually happen if you say it long enough -- things like market crash, earthquakes, comets -- and then you can claim credit for predicting it.

There's more than a few sensors there, and the speaker too - curious how it will all fit under the screen.

Oh, and I can't wait to hear all the pre-complaining that there is a floating dot at the top of the screen.

Yeah but will iOS take advantage of the space and put anything back that we lost due to the introduction of the notch?

That will be iOS 18 which will- coincidentally- make iPhone 16 seem "long in tooth" so that you simply must buy a brand new notch-less iPhone to "take full advantage of the amazing, new iOS 18" ;)

cha-ching!

Then iPhone 19/20 will roll with micro-hole punch camera and iOS 21 will make it seem "long in tooth" so you simply must buy a new iPhone to "take full advantage of the amazing, new iOS 21" ;)

cha-ching!

I sure hope that Apple does!

If they don’t take advantage of the extra space in the first iteration of a notch-less iOS then I would presume that they will eventually get to it in subsequent versions through presumptive customer demand.

Sometimes it takes a while but with a change like this, it should happen a lot quicker than usual. Especially because there are so many potential use cases for that extra space at the top. I can see Apple opening it up to app developers in the future as well

even though i have 13 pro i still keep my x as a backup, and honestly its much lighter in the hand and besides the battery and cpu speed, i dont really notice much difference.
