Samsung Display is developing new under-panel camera technology that Apple plans to use to hide Face ID under the display on next year's tentatively named "iPhone 15 Pro" models, according to sources cited by Korean website The Elec.

While rumors suggest that this year's "iPhone 14 Pro" models will feature both a "hole-punch" and a pill-shaped cutout for the front camera and Face ID components, respectively, today's report claims that Apple is planning for iPhone 15 Pro models to have only a hole for the front camera, with Face ID appearing hidden under the display.

Samsung's technology would effectively make Face ID sensors look invisible to the naked eye, in a similar manner as the hidden under-display camera on its Galaxy Z Fold3 smartphone, according to the report. On the Fold3, the pixel density over the under-display camera is lower compared to the rest of the display to allow light to reach the camera, but this results in the camera producing relatively low-quality photos.

It remains to be seen if the under-display version of Face ID would be as effective or secure as the existing system in a notch, or if there would be any other tradeoffs. Samsung is said to be collaborating with Canada's OTI Lumionics to develop the technology.

In its Korean-language version of the report, The Elec said Samsung first plans to apply the technology to its so-called "Galaxy Z Fold5" next year if development is completed on schedule, followed by the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

This is far from the first time that under-display Face ID has been rumored for the iPhone. In an April 2021 research note, reputable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that he expected Apple to adopt under-display Face ID for at least one new iPhone model launching in 2023, but he did not provide any further details at the time. Display industry consultant Ross Young also claimed Face ID would not be moved under the display until at least 2023.

SE99 rumour featuring the same SE2 design with A99 cpu…

I always assumed the pill and dot would be under screen. All those CAD drawings never specified if under screen or not.

I believe this rumor. I even think it would hide front camera hole too…. But that might be wishful thinking based on Apple Surprise of yesteryear.

I will wait till iphone 16 pro maybe and hold on to the gigantic 13 pro max. The iPhone, MacOS devices, AND the iPad have not done anything remotely interesting OR AMAZING since Face ID .

It's not all about processors for these Mac devices and iPads with 100 core M1 PROCESSORS scattered all over in various combinations while allowing Apple to overprice custom Arm core mobile processors in their supposedly best devices that will be outdated by Fall)

If they were interesting or amazing to anyone, then you failed to used other technologies out there. The rest of their tech and any of their OS's ( besides their processors and Samsung's displays) feels outdated.
I'm thinking that the iphone 17 pro max is going to be the penultimate iphone and going to wait to update my xs max until then. According to some there hasn't been innovation since the iphone 4 as nothing really has changed much except faster hardware and better screens...all incremental improvements.

Personally my ipad m1 pro with the magic keyboard is AMAZING. But to each their own.

Wish we could get under the screen TouchID. TouchID >>> FaceID.
Well maybe. Clearly a preference.
At least you can use TouchID at night...and in any place there isn't bright light. Oh, and also when you first wake up in the morning :/
Face ID can be used in pitch dark as well as the face id hardware has it's own infrared emitter. Maybe you weren't aware?

No, it‘s not gonna happe. If this year iPhone got a new cutout it can’t be next year. Apple is known for keeping design some years before changing it again.

That's the beauty of Apple. If you're patient and wait long enough...eventually they'll release a phone that has features users have been asking for.

If this rumor is true...I wonder how many customers will hold off purchasing this year's offering and wait 'til 2024?

So progress in back years? Steady on apple

Pericope lens is what I'm looking forward to for iPhone 15 pro line

Exactly. Keeps getting pushed back.

When I was a kid, I remember there was a cult leader in Asia who kept predicting a large stock market crash. After about 17 years, he was right.

There are many things that will eventually happen if you say it long enough -- things like market crash, earthquakes, comets -- and then you can claim credit for predicting it.
That’s why I’m over these “rumors”, it’s saying anything hoping it sticks. And it’s leading to people heightening expectations then being disappointed. It’s tarnishing Apples brand at this point, because we’re blaming them for not releasing certain features, or the product doesn’t come out the way we think (Apple Watch). Miss the leaks and images, or when the iPhone 3G was left at a bar. Now it’s “I think this might happen”.

Read the article:

But Face ID is more than just a camera. It’s a 3D facial map. Where would the dot projector go? This article seems like a guess.

So, penultimate means next to last. I hope you are wrong.

No. Nothing is hidden under the display. The speaker was just moved up and the sensors changed order. That’s all.
And you know this because you’ve cross referenced both Face ID modules? The Ambient Light sensor is no longer inside the notch its in the display.

And to prove it’s possible here is this article

Where else are the sensors supposed to go? Under the speaker?

Well, I certainly would be dropping my jaw on the floor if Apple makes iPhones 15 another repeat of the 12/13 designs.

But for iPhone 14, I'm not so sure that Apple goes all in on a new design. If then probably only for the Pro.
I think they are just struggling getting the Face-ID under the screen working up to Apple standards and other stuff and stalling as long as possible. Which I understand. Just hope it all works out.

Probably not aware because it never works. Not once.
Authentication tech reliability can vary. For example touch id doesn't work with many gloves, wet hands, cold hands etc.

I won't make an absolutist statement by saying face id on my xs max has worked in the dark 100% of the time since ownership, but I will say face id authentication in the dark is very reliable and works as long as my face is free from coverings.

Under panel Camera and a apple 5G modem wow the IPhone 15 gonna be a huge upgrade

Rumor varies from site to site
6 patents and the technology is there. If Apple wanted this in their iPhone it would have been done already
