Yeah I don't think any mainstream Android phone has USB-C 3.x cables included in the box either. This has been going on for years, so let's say this outrage is a little...late. Same for iPads with USB-C, same for Macbooks with USB-C, though with Magsafe 3 that doesn't even support data transfer at all.

As for reducing e-waste, first off EU doesn't regulate the cable included in the box, just the port, and they don't even regulate the USB speeds of the port, they just forced it to be USB-C (they only cared about charging, not data transfer). And if you want to reduce e-waste you would include no cable at all in the box, since not everyone wants a new cable, they might already have all the cables they need. So within a few generations Apple might not even include a cable, hope you like that bit of e-waste reduction!
Lots of android phones with USB C 3.0 cables in the box. Smart Talk android phones that cost $200 come with them….

They never once were able to improve the Lightning standard and instead had to jump to USB-C on Mac to get people who need data transfers via cable for work or else, and it‘s the same with all the other proprietary tech they have (e. g. AFP).
There is nothing that any other cable tech can do what USB-C can‘t, and it‘s doubtful there will be in the near future. Which is what the EU is talking about and implementing correctly, a law for the near future.

Just out of curiosity: What cable is better than USB-C for phones?
This.
The USB connector is still the standard for connections and has been for more than 20 years. Why change what literally every living human on earth has access to? That’s the reason the wheel hasn’t been vastly improved upon. Because it’s perfect design. It fits its use case so precise and perfectly utilized. Apple wanted their lightning connector around to make money. It’s a business pure and simple. Not to make anyone’s day easier or make life better. But to MAKE MOOOOONEY.
They charge for the design, for the licensing for the technology insides very use and replication. The lightning connector exists to MAKE MONEY.
And the fact they can’t dupe people anymore out of $30.00 for an inferior cable might upset them. But people allowed for this to go one for far longer than it should. It created a mountain of waste. Like the wheel USB C is perfect in design for its use.
Had apple made a MagSafe connector for the devices like the charger on the MacBook that would have been cool.
A high speed magnetically attached data and charging cable. But that’s way too hard to work out.

Also introducing the "Apple USB Cable Pro"
That already exists.

Changing a phone based on a charge port is equivalent to packing up all of your items, forcing your kids to change schools, finding a new job, finding a new house, saying good bye to all of your favorite shops and restaurants, applying for a visa, applying for a new license to drive, and etc...?

That's an extraordinary argument.
Yea forcing apple to put the USB C on and iPhone it’s a travesty!!! Apple should be able to charge $30 for junk cables that fall apart and are thrown out and replaced for far superior $15 cables. It’s a crime to treat Apple and their continents of cash that way. Has no one any decency anymore??? The humanity!!!!

And that price point. Lol
Many people here who are unhappy with Apple products/policies/decisions/etc believe flinging inane/juvenile remarks at Apple here will somehow be read and respected by Apple management and thus cause whatever they're unhappy about to be addressed, and as you put it, "solved."

Much better to write Craig Federighi a thoughtful letter.
but doesnt a society converse and have dialogue about their thoughts and desires?
Crying people have opinions is litelry crying into the void.

Who could have seen this EU-made disaster coming from a mile away? 🙋‍♂️ 🙋‍♂️ 🙋‍♂️ 🙋‍♂️

> EU mandates USB-C without specifying USB 3.0 minimum spec
> Apple ships billions of USB 2.0 cables with the box to keep costs down
> Users throw their USB-C 2.0 cables away when they realize these cables are slow, so instead of relying in AirDrop, they upgrade to an Anker USB3.0 cable
> Apple switches to portless phone several years later
> Users throw their USB3.0 cables away because portless iPhone is out and most of their other accessories are USB 4.1/5.0 with even better XYZ features

Meanwhile lightning hasn't changed one bit since ten years ago, did one thing really well: charge your iPhone, and there are billions of good functioning cables out there that didn't need to be thrown away before the portless iPhone.

Tell me again how this is a great idea for the environment.

As I predicted, big brain 5-head EU has absolutely no clue what they're doing. Thank them for the awfully annoying cookie popup on every single website too.

Yes, let us be slaves to corporate America and the stock market. LOL!

Sure a few hundred megabytes. In a city with 5GUW. But most of us don’t have access to that. And if we do it’s in the city and usually slower than LTE because every human in the area is using it at the same time.
I meant over future Wifi7 directly to my MacBook

yawn. It’s not uncommon for “charging cables” to just be USB 2.0. These are clearly charging cables first and foremost (that happen to be able to transfer data slowly ;) )

You completely ignored the false equivalency argument 🤦‍♂️

You are correct. But the iPhone via Bluetooth can not process the data as fast as my internet. It has to compress and send. I wish my phone transferred data that fast. But it doesn’t.
AirDrop isn't using solely Bluetooth. It's using WiFi direct. Bluetooth is used to negotiate the transfer and then it switches to WiFi to do the fast transfer. But yeah 480 mbps USB is probably similar to WiFi speeds.

Well, the 2024 high performance USB 2.0 will match the 2024 high performance 8GB memory on base-model machines so I guess we're good to go.

Are we gatekeeping who should or shouldn't buy apple products now?
Free market is not called gatekeeping.

As long as you keep buying Apple products, you're voting with your wallet and telling Apple what they're doing is good. Vote the other way.

This is how it has always been.

Free speech also works the same way. People do not need to affirm that every decision a company makes is good (or something that they otherwise agree with) in order to find their products worthwhile to buy over the competition.

People are going to share their opinions on both sides of the aisle, and that's fine. Gatekeeping who should or shouldn't buy Apple products is a completely separate discussion.

Sure and I'm voicing my opinion that you should stop buying Apple products if you really do not like lightning. Gov shouldn't have a say in how a charge port is designed.
You have a right to that opinion, as do others who share a different opinion.

I could care less about the transfer speeds of the USB-C. What I hate about the USB-C is the flimsy design of the plug at the ends of the cable. Bit of a poof for me - I have to buy them 2 at a time because of all the bumps in a normal home with kids or old folks around. The cheap design also does to the female par of the "c" system - I lost one of my 2 outlets and had to end up getting a new MB Air. Even then I had to bump my choice to the M2 version in order to get MagSafe. Aggghhhhh!
