You might be mistaking support for indifference.
I was going to say... uh... first off, we don't even know exactly what's going to happen. Two, everything I've read already invalidated a lot of the outrage in this thread. Three, i7guy has been a long time member here who I consider to be pretty level headed compared to the recent "APPLE IS LITERALLY HORRIBLE" surge that seems to be really popular these days. Most of the news articles are just constant uninformed outrage.

Fact is 99.999% of the people out there won't care. And a lot of us, myself included, have far more USB C (PD) cables to my desk than I do lightning. I look forward to the USB C change, I have been for years now. One less cable I'll have to carry around.

It's amazing to me how many posters here go out of their way to create contention and put so much energy into outrage over something that's a rumor. I guess most of us aren't too far from the uninformed mob burning days of our past.

Tell you one thing it does for me. Makes me want to spend less time here. :p (I know I know, posting this.... it's addicting, I'll admit). lol.

LOL! Not this guy, he's a bonafide Apple supporter through and through.

Companies should be allowed to make their own decisions about what products they want to make, and consumers should then be able to make informed decisions whether to purchase or not.
And government policies need to be respected, especially one where vast majority of consumers were begging Apple to switch to USB-C... like they did with MacBooks and iPads. Apple's greed is just adding to e-waste.

Haha, no worries, EU have put this requirement on apple and Every manufacturer must support USB Power-delivery 3.0 as a backup if the manufacturer’s proprietary charging standards isn’t supported.
Should be an interesting thing to see unfold then - Apple will be able to pull this off for the rest of the globe too so they will get their pound of flesh!

I agree, the faux outrage and constant negativity is tiring.

What proof do you have that they won't be? Of all my Apple products sitting on my desk, all are being charged by 3rd party chargers and USB C cables (6-10ft 100w Anker USB C cables).

I would put $ down on the table that these same cables will charge the next iPhone (or 2024?) no problem ... because they charge my iPad, my MacBook, and other Apple devices no problem.

Ironically, I remember all the teeth-gnashing when Apple did switch to USBC on the MacBooks.

Most consumers are likely going to be irritated by the change to USBC due to making all of their lightning cables/accessories redundant. That is a much greater concern to people than being able to use the same charging cable for all of their devices, I suspect.

100% agree with that, I can't even get a plastic straw for my drink because of government intervention. As slimy as this decision by Apple is, market forces will dictate the outcome, I'm sure Apple will be fine.

Apple engineers, if you're reading this, please continue to protect my iPhone from cheap Chinese accessories that can damage and hack my devices. Thank you.

You're absolutely right, but an MFi program isn't going to stop people from buying the cheapest cable they see on Amazon. It will protect informed consumers (who are more likely to buy from reputable brands anyway), but most people probably won't know/care about it. Instead, they'll just get angry that their USB-C cable that worked fine with their iPad doesn't work with their iPhone and blame Apple for gimping the product.

EDIT: Besides, I can't think of a way that Apple could limit non-MFi cables without running afoul of the EU regulations. They're pretty clear that devices need to support USB-C and USB-PD. And limiting data speeds on the Pro iPhone models would anger pro customers (who already have quite a few bones to pick with Apple and have been clamoring for faster transfer speeds for a while now).

edited for clarity.

Yah? So, it takes courage to switch to USB-C. What do you want Apple to do, bring back the floppy drive? Maybe the headphone jack?

I want Apple to be left to make the products they want, and for consumers to buy the products they want from what is offered on the market by those companies. I think that's a much better approach than this nanny-stating that's currently going on as I suspect we'll end up being worse-off from these regulations.

This isn't about me; this is about people like you having disregard for industry standards, government law and business ethics by your favourite corporation; so weird to think theres people that cheerlead over companies like its some kind of football team, it's so cringe.

Only way I could understand your support for Apple's greed is if you're a shareholder.
So people like you like government to regulate everything so corporations can't be "greedy"? As I said, you are free to vote with your dollars and show Apple. I support Apple 100% to do what they are doing and support you 100% to vote with your dollars.

It's political populism; calls to regulate away all behaviour that is deemed 'bad' with massive and unprecendented government regulation. It's the Trump platform.

Yup, and consumers are finally getting what they want and it took government intervention.

Consumers don't want what the government is forcing Apple to do, that's kinda the whole argument. It's all for someone else's interests, not consumer interests.

No consumer is going to be happy when they find their next iPhone doesn't use the same cables they've been using for the last 10 years. I can just picture the headlines already 'iPhone users outraged due to forced obsolescence of iPhone accessories as Apple changes connector'.

There's a limit Apple and frankly they crossed it many times.

But this is over the top. Silly or stupid is what I use to describe it.

This is an incredibly shady, anti-competative, and anti-consumer practice from Apple, I'm surprised they haven't been censured on this before now. We'd be up in arms if Samsung put restrictions on their TVs so you could only use overpriced Samsung manufacturered HDMI cables on Samsung TVs and all other HDMI cables wouldn't work or only allow a 480p SD picture unless cable manufacturers paid royalties to Samsung to make them. All this "it is to ensure a high quality standard and to make sure damage isn't done to your devices" is all marketing BS to cover corporate greed. This practice needs to stop.

Wonderful idea ! USB-B shaped connector that is not USB-C, since it does not have regular USB-C compatibility.

I would almost laugh if the EU rules this does not count as USB-C support since you cannot use your existing USB-C charger and expect it to work unless it is "Apple certified".

Do you all just not follow how much of a pain in the rear end USB C is? Do you know how many friends and coworkers I've had over the years fry USB C ports on laptops/devices?

First of all any cable will work so yes its completely allowed. Frankly Apple is doing something that should be part of the standard and that's protect the device. It's not marketing nonsense its common sense.

I lost a Nintendo Switch using a completely standard Anker charger with an Anker cable. They don't care. Cost 100 bucks in repairs with the use Nintendo chargers only speal.

All the legitimate companies will have the chip. Your gas station/dollar tree charger won't. I would much rather this then fry the port on a $1600 iPhone. Others like Samsung/Nintendo just laugh in your face and say were you using a charger made by us? At least Apple is allowing third parties to be certified which is far from what everyone else is doing.

No.

It's made things significantly easier; my phone, work laptop, chargers, headphones, battery banks, parents phones, external hard drives, mouse, keyboard even my lint roller and electric shaver all use USB-C male to male.

On the other hand, Apple sells a phone and laptop but the two Apple products can't connect without a stupid dongle. Makes sense.

This doesn't pass the smell test. I've never heard of this happening.

Interesting. So.... why hasn't Apple gone down this route on their $5,000 laptops?

Surely a USBC to lightning cable would allow you to connect an iPhone to a MBP? No need for a dongle.

am i one that doesn't like the USB-c connection? for my macbook, there's no secure click. maybe it's my OCD.

You mean we should have companies creating waste by forcing us to use another type of cable that we shouldn't have to use?

That's obviously pointless. What's depressing is that people support Apple with these kinds of decisions.

Passing rumors as fact. (Screenshot below taken just now from Reddit).

Interesting. :p

I seldomly use a cable to charge or transfer data from my iPhone now I'm just starting to think what the point of the port for non-pro versions anymore

Cable that we shouldn’t have to use?! Use the dongle then!
