Happened to me today for the first time. 16PM on 18.0.1. Opening the camera app using any means to do so was fine. As soon as I selected video, the camera app would immediately crash. A hard reboot fixed it.

Running a company the size of Apple is a level of challenging and complexity only an extraordinarily small number of people can comprehend, including you and me. Sure, the buck stops with the CEO but this is such an immature, oversimplified perspective. These were issues under Jobs, these are the same types of issues at *any* software company. Apple is just a large target. If we had OracleRumors or WindowsRumors or SalesForceRumors, etc., people would be saying the same thing about the same types of challenges.
Given a long enough timeline one sees patterns. You don’t need to be clairvoyant

This started for me. It started with the beta and it has stuck around with my iPhone 14 PM. I upgraded to the 16 PM and still experiencing this.

Pro tip: happens with every launch. It’s always the iCloud backup. Corrupted files. Restore from an earlier backup. If all backups fail, set up as new. Problem solved. It’s not a hardware issue.

Another reason why locally stored iTunes backups are superior while Apple continues to find ways to take that away from us

Never forget what they stole from you

My 15pm will freeze like its caching sometimes, other times its more annoying like when i try to swap tabs in safari and some of them i cant click and have to x out of them but some i can switch to some tabs.

only started when i upgraded to ios18
Same here as well. Can’t click on other Safari tabs or scrolling won’t work. This has to be the worst iOS to date. I can only imagine how “Apple Intelligence” will roll out.
Apple dropping the ball on AI is something Steve Jobs would have never done.

From June 1, 2023 to September 24, 2024, my 14 Pro battery capacity dropped from 100% to 93% in about 16 months. I posted this exact info in another thread on 9/24. Not bad. After upgrading to iOS 18, my 14 Pro battery capacity has dropped from 93% to 90% in nearly 4 weeks. 7% in 16 months v. 3% in 4 weeks? Coincidence? Hmm…

Think its hardware. Had a 16 PM do this, daily restarts and stuff but after Apple gave me a replacement unit the problem went away.

So far no issues with my natural colour 16 Pro. I have it in the Apple clear MagSafe case. The camera button is easier to use in the clear case.👍

Apple needs to lay off these massive software and hardware updates every year. Each year it gets worse and worse. This year has been the worst cycle of software in Apples history. Bricked iPads and Apple Watches. Selling phones using commercials on features that aren’t even out yet and won’t be for months (Apple Intelligence). All of this reeks of desperation to keep shareholders happy while trying to hoodwink the public.

Its embarrassing and I think all of us should expect more from a 3 Trillion dollar company.

Do you think it’s because not enough people are working on the software or they’ve had resources cut etc? Software quality has gone downhill since Scott Forstall left, in my opinion (it wasn’t perfect when SJ & SF were around either, but it was better).

It's probably the software. Apple with its yearly software cycle is really shooting themselves on the foot with this deadline. The quality of the OS is just trash these days.

They should switch back to releasing software after a few years & when it’s ready. OS X releases happened every 2-3 years, if I remember correctly.

How is Apple trying to take away the local backup option?

As usual no problems in my 16 Pro Max. No restarts, heat issues, etc. How many people? 5? 10? Some other irrelevant number that were supposed to make a big deal over?

More and more by the day the local device management features are being deprecated or get ignored and neglected to the point they do not even work
Go ahead, try and update or restore a device to iOS 18 in Apple Devices (which you are forced to use after iOS 18)
You can’t, because it will not even successfully complete. Nobody has been able to demonstrate otherwise.
Then there are rumors they will eventually take away the USB-C port for a fully wireless device, with no means for wired data transfer. The first step is making it not even work on the current devices, this is how they normalize it.

Personally I believe it’s because a few things. Apple is biting off more than it can chew to keep new features coming that they simply run out of time. Also they have over complicated the product lineup especially with phones and iPads which makes it harder to test everything. But the biggest thing of all is they have over complicated things so much that it’s hard to even keep track of everything. Similar to how iTunes Mac app became a giant disaster in recent years before they pulled the plug and blew it up.

Think back to the early days. iOS 5 added notifications. Like that was THE major new feature. iOS 6 added maps. After that, iOS 7-18 were loaded with new features across the board…. Across tons of devices. How the hell can you make all that work in under a year?!

The answer is you can’t. Devices are getting bricked , animations and silky smooth operations are a thing of the past. Yet we have the most insanely powerful chips on the planet. None of it matters if nothing is optimized properly.

Apple needs some soul searching. But the soul is gone. Tim is a bean counter. And a damn good one. If you own Apple stock it’s incredible what he’s done. But one thing is certain. That glimmer of magic is barely there anymore.

The iPhone was iconic. The iPad was iconic. Now every product lineup has a million options. Sadly Apple is slowly becoming what they used to make fun of.

There appears to be a bug with some iPhone 16 models that is causing random restarts, according to complaints on Reddit, the MacRumors forums, and the Apple Support Communities. Affected users are seeing their iPhones freeze unexpectedly and then reboot.

iphone-16-pro-colors-1.jpg

Reports about the issue have been ongoing since the iPhone 16 models first launched in September, and have continued to this week. The iOS 18.0.1 and iOS 18.1 updates do not fix the issue, as it has continued to happen to users even after installing the latest software.

The problem seems to pop up randomly. The display will stop responding or will be very slow to respond to touch input, and then the iPhone will do a quick restart. There have also been reports of the iPhone restarting unexpectedly when in StandBy mode.

Some users who contacted Apple shortly after the new iPhones launched were able to get replacement devices, but have had the issue reoccur. Almost all of the complaints are about the iPhone 16 Pro or iPhone 16 Pro Max, so it may only be the Pro models that are impacted.

For most people, the issue is sporadic, but some users have seen 10 to 20 crashes per day. In some cases, doing a fresh install and not reinstalling from an iCloud Backup seems to have fixed the problem, so it is possible that this is a bug related to iCloud.

iPhone 16 Pro Max: My phone doesn’t restart, but it does crash. I’m especially having this issue with the camera. There are times I just can’t use it at all and this is extremely frustrating. It won’t open. Or it will open and I can’t take a picture. Or when I tap on it to take a picture, the app just crashes. It’s infuriating! Apple, please fix this.

I had this issue. Migrated from Android to iPhone 16 pro max. Reboots happened every 30 min in avg, even in standby mode. Crash during eSIM activation corrupted my eSIM profile on the carrier side and effectively deleted my nb, took 3 days to the carrier to restore it. Meaning I couldn’t activate any app with SMS or receive calls, for example. Photos I took were rarely saved. Black camera half of the time. iCloud Photos sync stuck forever.
Full reset and restoring a very old iCloud backup fixed it. Even doing a reset was a challenge since antitheft protection forced a 1 hour wait, which reset if a crash/reboot happened.

I lost so many hours, photos, my whatsapp + signal chat history, and my sanity in the process. Reported feedback to Apple, zero replies.

I have been lucky here then because my 16 PM 1TB NT has been fine. From launch day, I haven't experienced a crash at all so far. This has been on 18.1 B4 to B7, and as I posted earlier my battery life has been great as well.

When I set up the 16 PM it was a complete clone from the 15 PM to the 16 PM, even that went perfectly. Apps have been fine, Wi-Fi 7 is working great and cameras are ok. At least for now I just can't fault it.

I got one restart that I thought was from some kind of automatic software upgrade. I guess not.

14 Pro. 18.1 developer beta switched to public beta a bit before resets ~5/day started. Also noticed that master account top of settings was greyed out and therefore inaccessible.
Went to Settings>Screen Time>content and privacy restrictions> toggled off C&PR (?I had not toggled this on)
This ungrayed Apple Account and no restarts since.

Clearly related to bugs in some application that all of these devices with the issues have in common. As we’ve seen in the past, poorly written applications, including a number of social media apps that developers and business beta testers do not use, can cause lag and even complete restarts.
