You must be new here / not walk the streets much.... all anyone asks for every year is a bigger and better battery.
On the Pro sure, but the Pro Max? That thing has always been a battery beast. If it’s not enough at that point you need to invest in a battery pack or something.

I don’t believe this report to start with. And I’ve said it before, we don’t know how well iPhone sales have done until we get quarterly earnings or a similar report detailing sales or such. People being clever by guessing from shipping estimates is both ludicrous and funny.

The market will be the market sure, and despite our criticism or not, apple knows what they’re doing, we do not.

And while I respect your opinion on what you value or not, my problem is people coming here to complain they are owed stuff (ie. USB 3 in non-pro iphone), if you don’t like it tough luck.

Last point, who said apple need to be at the forefront all the time? They don’t need to and they have shown us year after year they will delay features other phones have for a while. Me on one hand I’m happy I have a super reliable device with minimal bugs and strong performance.

Nothing against you bro, just an exchange of opinion😉

Apple invented the modern smartphone, I think it’s fair to expect they’ll continue to be a leader in the technology. Instead they seem to be more concerned with protecting their App Store revenue

16 looks cool but I'm not photographer aside from the the occasional picture of my pets and I'm indifferent towards the AI stuff. More than happy to hold on to my 15 pro max for another year or two. But will be picking up an Apple watch.

Old time developer here. There was a time when we released software when it was done and that's when we would say it's version 17 or 18 for example, but that was all before marketing got into the software development business. Now they just put a number on any dam alpha version and release it. The fact you think that is normal, is for us old timers the funny bit.
I have been using the iOS 18 beta since it was first released in the summer. There are quite a few updates in 18. Apple was very proactive in stating that Apple Intelligence features would not be in 18 but instead in 18.1 (which has also been in beta for months) at WWDC.

The colors are bad too, muted too much except classic silver. Another thing like many of you guys said: how many times you can buy the same phone with few enhancements? That’s rather boring, I think Apple spends least money on R&D with iPhone design, camera button? I think it will be forgotten and not used by most people since trend goes for portrait photos and videos, secondly software development: iOS 18 brings new photo app which will make a lot of people pissed as fk, Apple Intelligence? It’s not that intelligent since it comes as beta, and 10% features will launch with 18.1. Sorry Apple but became boring as hell 😉

If you look into the release countries it's not (yet) an EU-issue. They're only releasing US first and some time later a couple of other English-native countries. There's a lot of work that has to be done in localising
Localizing isn't the issue. Apple's childishness is. There's nothing to localize about a feature like "Clean up" to remove objects from photos. It's also done locally, so it can't be a server scaling issue either. Apple just tries to set a warning example for other governments like Japan and US to not regulate anything. They want to trick consumers into thinking that regulations are bad for consumers because they hinder innovation. Whereas what the EU is doing is the opposite, they try to allow innovation. But Apple is acting childish and not following laws instead only complaining. So, they're hindering their own innovation. I hope this "strategy" ends very soon!

I personally don't think there is a need for a revolution at every launch for people to get excited. But Apple needs to better than with the 16 Pro's. It just feels like an S moment. Also, there is not much anymore between the regular and the Pro. A camera and 120hz. Normal people don't care about the 5x zoom. Normal people don't care about the 120hz.
We of course as tech enthusiasts we do notice all that.

But honestly, this year just does not cut it. Even people out of my family that basically **** money don't see the reason to go through the hassle of changing phone.
It feels even less than a typical S upgrade.

Let’s be realistic here. The main feature Apple marketed is AI. Except AI doesn’t arrive in a near complete fashion (whatever that means) until spring 2025. If you assume Apple didn’t intentionally cripple the iPhone 15 to drive iPhone 16 AI upgrades and take them at face value that they were caught off guard by the RAM needs. You then have to wonder if they’ll have a similar reality with AI in the iPhone 16 lineup…

They figure out they need 16GB of RAM or something for it. So the iPhone 17 lineup ends up being potentially a much better buy as it would last longer.

Obviously the 17 will be the “true“ AI generation. Anybody buying this generation for AI really should take a step back.

That’s a bad take.

Leaders get dethroned all the time. Apple dethroned Nokia in the cellphone space and Windows Mobile in the smartphone space.

They are fierce about the App Store as it simultaneously generates a truckload of revenue and makes their customer base very “sticky” (basically makes the cost of leaving iOS artificially high as you’d need to rebuy apps on the other platform).

We don’t have a crystal ball though so we can’t predict Apple how well Apple is or isn’t doing long term though.

It’s a solid tock release. Some of the major updates like better microphones and thermals aren’t sexy and won’t move units, but will pay dividends down the line.

FWIW I’m watching close to see why Apple included the capture button on the base models. Not doing that would increase margins for those phones and probably increase ASP’s as many would go to the pro for that feature. I think there’s a longer game here. It does nudge users to take more landscape photos and videos, but I’m not sure what Apple’s payoff would be with that 🤔

If this year was a tock what was last year?

I struggle to see what this phone can do over my 14 Pro Max. I had it in my cart but when I thought about it; I just couldn't pull the trigger. Maybe if I was getting more for my trade in it would convince me.

For me, an iPhone is now only really worth the price tag if I make it last 2 years minimum, preferably 3. And I suspect a big chunk of the casual market feel the same. The tech bumps are too incremental and the price tags too high. I only jumped from my 13 to a 15 to get the better camera for a bucket list holiday. Now I’m planning to try and wait out for the 18.

Unless they have some better insight into “demand”, I think they are going to be wrong if they are basing their prediction on when delivery dates moved out for models. We’ve known for several weeks now that apple INCREASED production for these models this season from orders of components from suppliers and orders from manufacturing partners by between 10-15%... that alone would allow a same amount of demand, to NOT push out delivery dates as quickly.

We should know in ~ 2 weeks for sure.

cuz the upgrade cadence is 3 to 4 years now. the 14 and 15 was everyone's X and Xs upgrade. now 16 is everyone's 11/12 or 13 upgrade like me, who don't have the island or action button. and now the AI is the headlining feature that makes it worth upgrading.

Could you even tell the difference in the photos?

I'm currently on a 14 Pro and, to bet totally frank, I am one of the many who was 100% ready to upgrade until I watched the launch keynote. Now I will wait another year at least. The physical feature upgrades are okay-ish, the ever-larger phone sizes are annoying (if you want a big phone, maybe get a Max?), but more importantly the AI features won't be available until… sometime in the future? Maybe? Sort of?

I used to get a new iPhone every single year. I stopped w/ the 12, skipped the 13, and now will likely skip TWO cycles.

Kuo said a major reason for the iPhone 16 Pro models having lower-than-expected demand is that Apple Intelligence will not be available on the devices when they launch on Friday.

It's both amusing and bewildering why businesses and stock investors think AI, at least at this point of its maturity) is a "killer feature." At this point AI is at best a parlor trick on the consumer level, not to mention the privacy and IP issues, i.e., Adobe. It's anecdotal, but I've yet to have anyone tell me they can't wait for their AI-enchanced device -- pick a brand. Also anecdotal, I didn't upgrade to the 16 Pro Max from my 15 because the trade to buy delta was around $700 and all it got me was new camera control button (which I do like and lust but not for $700.
