one cable to do it all...but wifi does all as well without the mess of cables. If iphone doesnt worth it, be prepared this thing to be copy pasted by samsung and the others like they always do

Ok. And what if i am on a trip to Africa and need to backup my phone.

Not every place (even in the us) has high speed internet.

But I still have to carry a MagSafe puck for my phone to charge, a usb cable for my MacBook, and little puck for my watch. You expect the watch and MacBook to have Qi2 support soon?

No.

Edit: I don't what Samsung does. There is more than Apple and Samsung.
The whole industry will copy this...just watch history, sorry, but you will be forced to adapt

Yeah I tend to agree. The iphone is a general use device that has lots of value compared to carrying around other stuff. IF they yank the only port on the phone, that starts to turn the phone back toward a phone. In otherwords it would be a reversion and it would start losing value as a generalized computing device. Apple needs to consider this.
Yea, Apple should continue to support the 0.1% of their user base, not the 80%…
What fun it was in the pre-internet days when we didn’t have to worry about backups, charging devices etc…

what if......the only if is IF apple start doing this, the whole industry will slowly adapt and you will have to
Apple is not interested in your imaginary scenario "what if" Apple is a profit company like the rest

Snark: Then just don’t go. You can watch Africa documentaries while your phone slowly charges via “wireless”

What 0.1% are you referring to? Surely using the phone as a general computing device applies to higher than 80%.

Thats not a what if.

There are literally places in the US that have no cell service and rely on this like starlink.

Next time do some research before you talk about things you are not knowledgeable in.

I work in this field. So…
So, does Apple care about you or me? No, they showed they are a big and strong impact company that moves forwards and doesnt care about normal, living in the past customers....if they cared, we would still have optical iphone headphone jack Apple devices in 2025

Why people complain now, and 5 years later will buy an port-less smartphone?! Pointless talking

Not much room for a MagSafe set-up in my car.
Why would there need to be? If you plug a USB-C or Lightning cable into the bottom of your iPhone, how is it taking any more space to have a MagSafe cable stuck to the back of your phone? Cable hanging off the back of your phone versus plugged in the bottom — not really a “space” issue unless I’m not understanding you correctly.

the need for a wired port, even though I use a cable for backups, I've been told many times here on MR that a port is not needed anymore, and I agree with that.

OK so only 0.1% need a wired port? Do you have a citation for that number or did you just now make that up?

TLDR;
Don't make it slimmer, make the camera bumps go away. I hate the bumps.

Wi-Fi 8 at 100,000 Mbit/s wouldn't lose much speed!

I don't think anything else in my house can get near that over any external connection.
I was more wondering how current WiFi transfer speeds compare to USB 3 (keeping in mind you need to have that WiFi capability on both your iPhone and your computer).

From what I've read, WiFi 8 won't appear on consumer devices until about 2028. That means, on average, for people who replace their Macs every 3 or 4 years, that even if their iPhone has WiFi 8, their Mac probably won't have it until 2030+.

Thus, if do you want to look to the future, a better comparision to WiFi 8 would be whatever the standard smartphone wired connection will be in about 2030 (which will certainly be much faster than USB 3).

you should enjoy those areas as you won't have access to social media etc etc ...

repeating myself: in the pre-internet days I travelled to 5 continents without a cellphone, GPS etc, somehow I survived

I have a 1TB iPhone. That’s going to be A big PIA to try and backup wireless to my computer

After the first backup the rest should be incremental; even a wired connection will take a long time if you back up teh entire phone each time vs incremental.

Ok. And what if i am on a trip to Africa and need to backup my phone.

Not every place (even in the us) has high speed internet.

A port has nothing to do with internet speeds since it is a physical connection and not wirelessly to a network; unless you are using USB to Ethernet, in which case high speed internet would not matter anyway.

From what I've read, WiFi 8 won't appear on consumer devices until about 2028. That means, on average, for people who replace their Macs every 3 or 4 years, that even if their iPhone has WiFi 8, their Mac probably won't have it until 2030+.

I suspect wireless only phones are a ways off as well; and probably would not be introduced across an entire line at once; and as long as the speed is similar to what a wired connection is it won’t matter to most users.

People are acting klike apple will introduce wireless only in the iPhone18 line. I would guess it would first appear on the low end, simply because people using higher end phones are more likely to use peripherals requiring a port.

Thus, if do you want to look to the future, a better comparision to WiFi 8 would be whatever the standard smartphone wired connection will be in about 2030 (which will certainly be much faster than USB 3).

Given PC port speeds are much faster often than phone ports I suspect phones will lag behind for the near future.
