Okay first impression of the Phone Rebel Air.

It’s heavier and sturdier than I expected from a case with that name 😂 No MagSafe bump, everything is smooth. I do not like the flow through buttons with slits, they are rather hard to press right now. Especially the action button. That one has no click at all. I heard it gets better over time as it wears in though? Apart from that, it’s nice to hold. Sorta slippery on the back with textured sides. Phone snaps in nicely, but is also easy to remove. No screen lip except for the corners. And the gap around the camera plateau is rather wide and might collect detritus. CC button is easily pressed and works. Cutouts at the bottom are well aligned. Guess we’ll see how it fares in real life. It feels protective.

Edit: It might cause problems with screen protectors that reach further towards the edge of the screen than my Spigen EzFit, because it closes around the edge of the phone and there is not much space left in my case.

Ive ran it with both a torras origarmor and flolab 3d screen protector and they fit with no lifting. Even with the flolab being misaligned. So you should be good to run just about any protector

Nice write up, thanks! A couple of comments/questions:

I remember from the 16PM that this case is beefier than expected given the name. It’s quite a bit lighter than the Gen 6/7 though, so I suppose it makes sense within their lineup.

I can see that gap around the plateau in your photo—it definitely looks like a lint catcher. Ugh.

How rigid is it above the plateau (see pic)? I’m guessing it’s pretty flexible? This has always been a weak point for pure TPU cases, and it’s far worse this year with the addition of the full width “plateau”.

I just tried and though it is no match for the Mous, which doesn't budge at all, it is not what I'd call flexible. The whole case is quite rigid in fact. It has a little give at the top, but it won't easily bend there.

A journey indeed! Thanks for sharing this—it’s quite informative.

I’m not surprised the Beats and Apple topped your list. For me, they are very difficult to match on form factor and fit. I don’t see the TechWoven on your list—is there a reason why?
Some user experiences discouraged me from trying the TW (from a drop-proof point of view) and I already had the Silicone at home. But it's definitely on my list of cases I still want to try someday.

That's good to know, thanks! Because I have a Flolab screen protector incoming in the next couple of days. Fingers crossed it's not misaligned. 😬 (what a curse this year...)

I want to apologize in advance for the negativity here. I received the Otterbox Cactus for the iPhone Air today. All I can say is Otterbox (like some other major brands, looking at you UAG) has totally lost it in my opinion. The lack of any meaningful QC, combined with sloppy design work and ever inflating prices, have really turned me off this brand. Here’s what’s wrong with this case:
  • The screen lip is uneven, undulating up and down around the case.
  • There’s a massive air gap above the USB port. This will certainly snap in short order.
  • The mic cutouts don’t match the mic openings (WTF?).
  • There’s a massive gap (3-4mm) between the plateau and the metal surround which will catch all sorts of detritus. It is also uneven.
  • The button edges are sharp.
  • The metal camera surround is deeper than it needs to be by 1-2mm.
  • Otterbox claims Cactus Leather is an environmentally friendly material, but in reality it is primarily polyurethane (60-70%), with some cactus pulp mixed in. This makes the material un-recyclable. Greenwashing at its finest.
Needless to say, this will be going back to Amazon. Ugh.

How did this happen on my Apple Silicone this fast? Purchased October 26th.

I forgot all about the air gap above the USB-C port. I have a friend that purchased the Cactus and she said the CC button was useless and had to get her husband to remove the case as she could not get it off the phone. Otterbox has really taken a dump in the last few years. I still have not purchased a cactus this year.

I agree with all your points other than the uneven screen lip which seems to be a defect on yours. I actually like the camera moat. The buttons to me are the same as the one I had on my 15PM and they don’t seem sharp to me. The usb-c floating ledge and speaker cut outs are stupid. For now the grip and feel are what sells me on the case. At the end of my trip, I may return it if I don’t like it later on. Initially i wanted to bring the phone rebel gen 7, but as usual with my luck, delivery was the day after I flew out.

I agree, the grip and hand feel are good. It’s too bad there are so many other issues.

Back in the Beats today. It’s a helluva nice case, just a little slippery.

dBrand Grip already has a tracking number so hopefully will have that Saturday.

Also getting an Otterbox Cactus today from Amazon so I will report back on quality later.

I was the one that shared the photos and I appreciate seeing yours too.

It’s such a great combo and this case is by far my favorite. No need to entertain anything else for me personally.

I’m totally set on it!
Agreed! Techwoven really checks all the boxes. Looks, feels, and fits perfect and picks up no fingerprints. Apple really knocked it out of the ballpark with TW.
